There's no 'ideal' way to play it on a PS5. The game has no support for VRR or 120Hz (or even HDR) so there's nothing you can do besides try out quality and performance and decide which sucks less. Balance is awful, don't even bother. Performance mode isn't the no-brainer that it should be because the game uses FSR3 framegen to boost 30 fps to 60, which is not what it's designed to do. And it still drops below 60 fps at times, which makes the lack of VRR even more annoying. I just got the game when the physical version finally released, and I ended up sticking with quality mode because fake 60 fps with lots of input lag and uglier visuals is pointless imo.
It doesn't seem like any of the stuff Digital Foundry pointed out at release was ever looked at by Game Science. The only performance tuning they did was for the PS5 Pro, turning balance mode into 40 fps in a 120Hz container (which I assume is the way to go for people who have a Pro and a 120Hz TV) and swapping out FSR3 for PSSR.
Performance framerate isn't great which defeats the purpose and Quality's got framerate issues to the point it almost feels like slowdown at times. This is definitely one of those games that is probably better played on PC. Think I'll also stick with Quality mode for this one which is surprising to me but yeah.
This seems like something that could move PS5 Pro systems if it fixes all this / combines Performance and Quality. Anyone play it on PS5 Pro yet?
Also wondering what I should spend skill points on. I spent my first 8 points on all six levels of +HP and both levels of the fast attack opener range extension, which seemed like a no-brainer but is a much smaller upgrade than I was hoping for. No clue what to do next in the skill tree. Haven't even figured out how to parry yet, unless the staff twirl is a parry (seems like it's for blocking projectiles mainly?)
Very cool game, feels like an easier version of Sekiro. Surprised there isn't a standard level-up system or stats.
