Everyone and their moms are opening new MMO studios
Watching the downfall Blizzard is like watching a long time drug lord get taken out by the feds only to be immediately replaced by the next drug lord.

Blizzard is just blindly limping along hoping for a miracle. It’s high time the vultures swoop in and feed on its dying carcass.

I want to build a new MMO based on a vision that it's not meant to be easy. Not from a skills perspective but from an open world, random things affecting you perspective. So much so that you can never feel safe, and just staying aware of your surroundings can keep you alive.

Did anyone play the Warcraft 3 Custom Game "Ice Troll Tribes"?

As well as having a Health gauge for combat, you also had to keep warm and eat. You had to craft warm clothing/camp fires and hunt food.

Brearh of the Wild and Genshin Impact both have aspects of that with ice zones where you meed to keep warm, Breath of the Wild also had a desert zone you had to keep cool in and a lava zone too.

Gear resets are a problem MMOs have always had, I've thought for a long time that they can be offset by needing different gear for different environments.

Imagine if the reward for beating Molten Core was access to the Firelands where you had to wear fire resist but got special gathering zones etc

Ice Troll Tribes was a survivor mod, though. It’s more DayZ or No Man’s Sky than MMO.

Special gear for special zones is one of those things that is cool on paper but shitty in practice. It’s just another piece of niche gear cluttering up your inventory and more often than not, it’s a gear reset if your expected to fight shit in said gear

100% agree.

Unless it passively affects the world around you (ie; snow trolls come out of hiding) weather effects in games that affect your stats detrimentally are basically another stat like 'get your to-hit to x amount' or 'get your resist to x amount or die on boss'.

I've yet to see this done properly in /any/ game.

For example, in games like early EQ, you can't tell in any capacity what your resist is versus, say, Nagafen. You're told, "Wear fire resist gear to prevent the fire AOE" but unless you do trial and error, you're not actually going to know if you have enough fire resist. It's a point of confusion and contention and I don't trust modern game designers to expose that sort of info in a way players can understand without making the system needlessly simplistic, and at that point it's just another dumb 'borrowed power' style system for that one boss or mechanic.

EQ2 was especially egregious with their 'critical mitigation' idea in Destiny of Velious. Instead of letting people optimize for damage, or damage mitigation, /everyone/ was pidgeonholed into gear that had 'critical hit mitigation' on it. If you didn't have 'crit mit', you couldn't do the raid even if you were the best player in the game. Destiny of Velious era EQ2 was considered one of the worst expansions, namely due to Georgeson's awful direction with p2w combined with a departure from Hartsman-era design, and it never recovered from there.

Big Brain. It's easier to set the expectation that "This game is hard/challenging but rewarding", and delivering content that aligns with that than be ambiguous and all over the place like WoW and having mountains of complaints due to trying to appease everyone.

Pretty sure Project Gorgon has zones that are weather extremes that require special gear/consumables.

I think special gear can work as long as you have a really strong gearset/gear storage system. Nobody wants to play inventory management for shit they HAVE to lug around and sifting through shit only to realize you forgot you're wearing your fire resist earrings during raid night is not fun. The challenge should be the intention of the player to do something, not in their ability to fight your shitty ui/inventory system to make it happen. The armory chest system in FF14, expanded for different styles of gear would probably work. Even better, set up an armor rack system in your instanced housing where you can store the armor sets in the 'real world' and then just have a goofy d&d style magic closet to access them when not at home.

Limit it to a few slots like Cloaks and maybe Gloves/Boots.

Have a UI pop up in a weather zone "You are entering Molten Core, equip your fire resist set?" and your gear tab has slots to put in your resist sets that don't take inventory space.

Now you got a bunch more stuff to farm, that will be an engaging system if there are special areas you can enter which others can't with special rewards.

Lots of mobile games do this with fucking no reward other than it being needed to kill specific bosses.

I also want them to do something like have Trinkets come from story milestones and Rings from reputations (which newbies can go back and do). So if you played hardcore in Burning Crusade (like me) you'll have your killing Illidan trinket which has an Illidan themed effect and scales to the latest expansion endgame and your Aldor or Scryers Ring which does the same and teleports you to Shattrath when you use it.

Like... every item doesn't have to be the same +do gooder shit. Where is the RPG?

Blizzcon(line) cancelled to the surprise of no one.

We have no IPs of interest to release and a big self aggrandizing weekend long advertisement where we sniff our own farts doesn't really work as well when the company has no talent or fans left.
