Hoover being introduced also means the government is going to get hardcore vs. the gangsters as well ;P
Yeah I like how they introduced Hoover (with that actor Eric Ladin from Generation Kill, Mad Men, The Killing, etc) and they seem to stick mostly to the historical side of the show, as Hoover was indeed appointed Director of BOI in 1924, before transforming it to a little known federal police service named FBI.

Oh and Capone taking over Cicero with Van Alden's help seems quite exciting too.

The Capone and Luciano shit can be some of the best tv, if they write it right.

Not being able to shoot a dog you've had since childhood isn't going pussy, good sir.
Man for 2 seasons all i've wanted to see is Harrow and the suitcase of badass that comes with him, but man that dog scene, i had to forgive him, Harrow is in his 20's so that dog must be hella old, remember he didn't goto war and this is his first time seeing the dog and his sister, he came back home with the injury and she took care of him until he was better. (i'm assuming the dog came with) So that dog musta degraded pretty bad in the last year or so, which happens when a dog is that old, and then you have to shoot him! fck that, it was the last straw for Harrow.

But man his sister is as badass as he is. Not just the putting dog out of misery, she's just like, fck dad dead, husband dead, i'm preggers, half face brother comes back... whatever, just don't leave again.

i'm having a hard time deciding which of 2 badass women in broadwalk empire i like more, harrows sister, or Van Alden's new babysitter wife.

who was the dude who called harrows sisters house at the end? I am totally lost with his storyline - some dude on a train paid him to murder a bunch of people, using the deed to his sisters house as blackmail?

the black (I MEAN LIBYAN) doctor and chalkys storylines are fucking awesome, that is one scaryeruditemotherfucker

Maybe somebody trying to get Harrow for taking the money and not finishing the job? Or someone trying to track him down because he killed his associates? I don't think we really know yet but I'd assume the former since he killed the tax collector before calling.

Dr. Narcisse is a good bad guy. I already hate his pretentious fucking ass. I really hope Chalky gets the final satisfaction of killing him at the end of the season.

When Harrow dropped the book during his cancelled hit on the third man the sheet of paper (showing she is in debt bigtime) his sister had accidentally left in it must have fallen out. She's in the financial shits because of their father dying, getting pregnant then her new husband dying.

Harrow told the third man he had been paid by someone he met on a train to kill the three of them at $1,000 each. That doesn't really make any sense though, what kind of conversation on a train leads one person to trust another enough to ask him to carry out hits for them?!

The chap making the call at the end had killed the third man and had found said piece of paper when going through the office. It's not the actual bloke from the train as even with the shitty old phone network he would have recognised his distinctive voice.

We are still in the midst of a mystery. Did he really get the job from a random train passenger? Why is someone else hunting down at least one of the same targets and wants to meet Harrow? Add in the plot thread that basically Harrow is almost at the mental breakdown we've seen coming since the first time we saw the scrapbook way back in the past and it's probably a bad time for Harrow to be reforming his lifestyle if he's going to have a knock on the door very soon.

Then again someone killing his pregnant sister would probably turn him completely into a 1920s Terminator!

Christ that was a lot of words over a small detail, sorry >.<

Edit: VVV At least the jpg title told me what film that was, never seen it!

While that is pretty much how I've thought that all played out and we're in "wait and see" mode, one part was pretty confusing: Why did he even have the fucking book with him on that attempted hit? To pass the time?

i guess it's the 1920's version of "surprise motherfuker!", you walk into YOUR own office and there's a weird ass book on your desk, your gonna be befuddled, i guess. Also don't we all feel sorry for that guy?, he's basically the only one in broadwalk empire to try to pull a gun on Harrow and live... he tried TWICE!

Both times he met targets in their office he was in there before them waiting to ambush them, this time he possibly did indeed take the book to pass the time while he waited for him to turn up? Total conjecture obviously

Actually as I type that I recall this weeks target knew there was someone in there when he saw said book on his desk.

He didn't kill that one dude and then he proclaims that he can't do it anymore. I took that to mean all killing.
He didn't kill that dude because that dude could make the back taxes on their family home dissapear. That's why he told the guy when he hugs his children at night to remember it didn't cost him anything.

He told the guy "when you see your family tonight, remember it didn't cost you anything" because just moments before that the guy was willing to pay Harrow to stay alive.

I think I agree with Alex that it seems very sudden for Harrow to go soft so quickly. He's never shown any problem being able to kill before and yet suddenly he can't do it anymore. Since it only started after he got back to his sister, I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact that he has "rediscovered" his family, so to speak. After all, he decides not to kill the one guy in the office after the guy says he has a wife and 2 daughters.

Like others here have predicted, I think Harrow's sister is ultimately going to die and that will set him off into Terminator Mode 2.0.

Is there a real life story on the black supremacist dude?
I posted this earlier in the thread--they say he's from Harlem, the "numbers" bankers were the "black mafia" of their day.

snip

It might be based off of the "Numbers" bankers of Harlem during this period. They had a lot of interactions with the Genovese family and Luciano specifically in order to get out from under the thumb of Gangster Dutch Shultz. Bumpy was the one, I believe, that had the most direct interaction and got them out from under the families thumb when Luciano took over everything. Here is his Wiki ...No idea if it's him, or not, but from what I understand, he and his fellow bankers, were allowed to run Harlem independently after getting Luciano to kill off the old boss--All they had to do was pay up a small tax on their numbers game.

It's probably an amalgamation of all the "numbers" bankers, at least, that's what I thought when I saw he was from Harlem. They were really the progenitors of the "black" mafia in the U.S. and they started in Harlem right around this time. It probably draws on Bumpy the most if I'm right, as he was the most famous. He was a pretty big associate of the Genovese family and an independent operator/crew allowed to exist in New York (Which was rare--so the guy had some balls/was respected.) He's sometimes referred to as the "Godfather" of Harlem.

snip

Watching the character now, I think he is a mixture of all the Numbers bankers. Casper Holstein was big on black education/black rights, and his roots back in Africa (Even though he was half danish). There seems to be elements of all theHarlemNumbers guys in the character.
