Lol.I wonder how far Tyson could have gone if he had Mayweather's lawyer! Heyooo!
I disagree. As a causal fan, the 70's, 80's and 90's were awesome. I don't pretend to have 1% the knowledge of real fans but that time frame was fantastic. Every fight seemed to be an event. You could watch the biggst fights on premium cable without PPV. The fighters had something to offer everyone. Mayweather sucks ass for the caasual but is appreciated by someone like yourself. Some people might have complained about Tyson destroying people in 10 seconds but they always came back. I personally have no interest in watching another Mayweather fight. I just can't appreciate it.Boxing can never win with a casual fan because they only follow about 1% of what's actually going on.
I will do that.Check out the PBC card this weekend and also Canelo-Kirkland and let me know how you feel about boxing. They should be quality shows.
It's weird for sure and they are about ready to make a deal with ESPN as well. I think long term to recoup money, it has to be this way. This was a 500 million investment. My guess is they are trying to start a bidding war. Fine by me because they have been putting on good cards. The broadcast blows but the fights have been good. They need to get Wilder on there tho. Hopefully in June. Casuals love their heavyweights and he's the best we have.I'm afraid PBC is really going to start suffering from constantly bouncing around between networks. One week it's on NBC, the next two it's on CBS, back to NBC, etc.
Can say what you want about Oscar dude fought EVERYone, never ducked anyone, never thought about ducking anyone. He faught Hopkins when he SHOULD NOT have. Dude was just way to big for him. Oscar was a great fighter, not an all time great, but he didnt duck anyone. How you not gonna mention Johnny Tapia! (edit: time flies, I guess, Tapia probably more than the 'not too distant past')
There have at least always still been characters in boxing, Tapia being one of the best.
Like plenty of us have said, there have been a decent handful of really good fighters, maybe even a few great fighters, in recent years. The sport as a whole has issues, though. Kinda like Basketball has always had great, historic figures, but there were some really lean years too where the championships were on tape delay. Just like baseball has always still had a few great African American players, but it's a well documented fact that baseball is at an all time low for interest and relevance in those communities.
For instance, I figured I'd watch the upcoming fight on Convo's recommendation. So, it's live on HBO East at 6pm, but that's not an HD channel in my area. So, I find it in HD, also live, at 9pm. Err, what? Meanwhile, every other sports seems to be live, like actually live, and being watched at the live time, including Football at like 7 in the morning. Would that have been the case with any other sport at this point? Choosing between watching in live and not in HD, or watching it 3 hours after it airs in HD while HBO is claiming it's 'live' in the description. Dumb shit like this always seems to plague boxing.
edit to also add... De La Hoya?! Meh, I always thought he was far more hype than substance... he certainly did lose to all the good fighters of his era, though, while still thinking he was the best ever, which is a feat in itself.
Canelo-Kirkland is going to see a knock out. Both dudes like to throw them! lol Its going to be interesting. Canelo is like 24 now. He's about to hit his prime in the next year or so. Should be a fun fight.Check out the PBC card this weekend and also Canelo-Kirkland and let me know how you feel about boxing. They should be quality shows.
The way he was so intimidating as soon as he stepped in the ring, I'm not sure we'll see somebody else like that. The fight was already partially won before the bell even sounded. The Buster Douglas fight goes down as one of the top upsets (or THE top upset) in all of sports and not just because Tyson was good but because of the aura that surrounded him at the time. It was just jail that ruined him, he had a lot of bad people around him and once Cus died, that was pretty much the beginning of the end.I wonder how far Tyson could've gone if he hadn't been locked up.
I know he came back after, but I can only assume not being able to properly train for all those years pretty much ended it.
