Hey now, there's no need to use gendered language for that. Monopolizing the instructor's time with your bullshit knows no gender. Then they implemented Operation Eliminate the Macho Effect: guys who showed-off in class were taken aside in class and told, "You're so passionate about the material and you're so well prepared. I'd love to continue our conversations but let's just do it one on one."
I bet not. Seems like you'd start a program like this because your department is running under capacity and you want to push more BS's than BA's. And then you can dress it up as increased opportunity for young women because that's also true. One of them win/win things if it works. The other issue I had was them saying "The female professors packed up the students and took them to the annual Grace Hopper Conference, which bills itself as a celebration of women in technology. ". So what about the male professors? Did only the female professors get the honor of taking their students to the conference?
However, the end result of many more women sounds good. They don't give hard numbers though, did this result in less males continuing on in the field?
Prejudice plus power - RationalWikiAnyone know when/where exactly this whole "racism/sexism = power + prejudice" bullshit redefinition effort got started?
The phrase "Power + Prejudice = Racism." was invented in 1970 by Pat Bidol[12] and popularized by Judith H. Katz in her 1978 book White Awareness: Handbook for Anti-Racism Training.
It is important to push for the understanding that racism is 'prejudice plus power' and therefore people of color cannot be racist against whites in the United States. People of color can be prejudiced against whites but clearly do not have the power as a group to enforce that prejudice.[13]
Interesting read, and also supportive of the idea that the environment is stronger than any supposed biological inclinations. Thanks for that. Was linked this by one of my students.
How one college went from 10% female computer-science majors to 40% Quartz
I do have some issues with some of the methods listed, but I found it an interesting read.
haha. wtf.Was linked this by one of my students.

yeah if you want to be overtly manipulative to reach an idealized goalInteresting read, and also supportive of the idea that the environment is stronger than any supposed biological inclinations. Thanks for that.
Hmmm. I must have missed the part in the article where anyone was punished for anything, let alone overachievers. Can you show me where you found that?haha. wtf.
1. Step one. penalize overachievers. Lower the bar for everyone!
2. Step two. Lie to students, and pretend programming is FUN! and you'll get to make video games!
There is totally a market for making Dance Dance revolution games for the elderly!
Citation needed.yeah if you want to be overtly manipulative to reach an idealized goal
Very clearly.Hmmm. I must have missed the part in the article where anyone was punished for anything, let alone overachievers. Can you show me where you found that?
Also, what "lies" were being told? It was never implied that "making video games" was the primary reason to learn programming, but even if it was, the school provided additional courses that allowed students to do just that. So they taught students a skill, then provided circumstances under which that skill could be used in a productive, useful, and (gasp!) fun way. Where's the misdirection here?
What's wrong with making a DDR game for the elderly? The Wii showed that many elderly people are willing to play games, and if doing so provides an opportunity for physical activity, what's the problem? Are you implying that anything less than using Python to cure cancer is a waste of time?
Some people just like to complain for the sake of complaining, I guess.
Segregation. Move the experienced away from the lesser. so instead of them helping the lesser.. you now have the lesser separated so they don't feel bad about themselves. As part of this first step, the professors divided the class into groups-Gold for those with no coding experience and Black, for those with some coding experience. Then they implemented Operation Eliminate the Macho Effect: guys who showed-off in class were taken aside in class and told, "You're so passionate about the material and you're so well prepared. I'd love to continue our conversations but let's just do it one on one."
Moving the experienced away is a good idea when you're actually trying to teach people. Everyone just copied off me in the lab periods for my 200 level Java classes, because I already knew OOP from C++. The two guys I knew from high school would ask to see my homework projects and then they'd sell them to the rest of the class without me knowing it. No one in the class learned anything.Very clearly.

This is taken even further by taking the achievers aside and asking them to no longer participate openly.
I can hardly even laugh at the effects of that kind of negative reinforcement.
As for the games, that is no different from "tighten up the graphics on level 3."
You have any idea how many people go into that shit, because they want to make games?
This is increasing an artificial number, at the cost of the students education. About as stupid as "teaching for tests" that highschools do to meet quotas these days.
