She actually believes the intellectual progressivism stuff for the most part, the problem I have with them in general is somebody has to be able to impose these changes on the rest of the globe or we'll get destroyed by barbarians like every other empire in history that softens itself and is overrun later in the end by harder people, somebody has to win the old game of nations first and the big problem that I see is you can really kill the golden goose changing culture without realizing it's unintended consequences.

I'm way too cynical to actuallybelievein progressivism. Human institutions are bound by inevitable failure. The fact that progress keeps happening actually baffles me, I'm just trying to help explain it using the toolkit I have.

I'm way more of a transhumanist. Either science will make us into immortal geniuses and render all of these social, political, economic and especially environmental problems moot, or society will collapse under it's own weight. It's a simple math problem of resources vs rising population vs declining viability of earth as a habitat.

the question I have is how long until they think just trying to keep people alive and happy with machine labor isn't worth it, it will get scary. When your survival depends on dole you're truly fucked, you have 0 leverage.

That's why we always have to make sure the smart people are in charge. Smart people realize that intelligence is mostly a roll of the genetic/environmental lottery ball and that the society that can maintain the largest amount of well-fed, well-educated people with the maximal self-enrichment time will produce the most outlier geniuses and therefore the most progress. (I think even when everyone is on the dole, we will still look down on the people who aren't trying to reach their maximum potential.)

Basically, if we don't hit Star Trek level progressive ethics we're all going to end up dead anyway from the weight of our own failure, so let's try to do that because there's no other viable options.

But just because it's our only viable option doesn't mean I actually think we'll rise to the challenge.

Na, I'm really blaming that one on catholic school. Plaid skirts + stockings + shiny shoes + no boys is a dangerous and powerful combination.

Me being a dyke just made it a lot easier for him to relate to me. We probably wouldn't have had much of a relationship at all if I wasn't.
