idk found it interesting. Not all the enlightening, but interesting.

seems to indicate combat is going to have a more weighty, strategic feel than just gcd spam of 30 randomly named abilities that all do the same thing. But we kinda already knew that much.

the game will reward those who can predict moves and counter them, the "flow" of combat will be more skill based, more like chess or a fighting game where skill matters, and less like typical mmo where two dudes exchange blows until one of them runs out of hp.

they've been saying mostly the right things out of the gate. A few things have been "wtf thats dumb as shit" but this isn't one of them.

That's the dumbest update I've ever seen. For any game.
A huge part of PvP is predicting (or finding out via spies) what your opponent is doing. Probably a third of my effort when leading largescale pvp is trying to predict what the opponent will do and how long it'll take. This is easy when fighting PUGs and very difficult when fighting organized groups.

Despite agreeing with David Sirlin regarding 'yomi' I also agree with you, the update makes no sense. If Todd were to describe the game mechanics they are implementing to enable player predictions to matter at different levels it'd be very interesting. At high levels the design choices matter very little. All you need to do is put different goals on the field with different difficulties and values and if there are two competing groups there will be a lot of very interesting dynamics. At a lower level though achieving the capability for deep player prediction and reaction is challenging. Fighting games do this best (Since it's nearly 100% focused on low level mechanics).

think you are getting ahead of yourself.

They are focusing solely on basic combat. they are talking about "low level mechanics" as you put it, or reaction/prediction of player(s) when it comes to actual combat. Once they have the combat model done then you can add tactical, strategic, and campaign level "meta" predictions.

So I can combo my left click with a left click and follow it up with three more left clicks for the ultimate combo? Compelling. Does the centaurs helmet have centaur fur on it's crest?

Hehe given its not even alpha yet I don't expect to see much in the way of tricky combos yet. Right now they are at the stage can we string stuff together and make the animations fire off and effects trigger as expected.

I like solo combos when timing is involved and you have that extra spectrum of micro to utilize. Ex: figbting games.

Im sure this same argument has come up before, maybe I was even the one who brought it up previously, but its worth mentioning again.

Asherons Call pvp combat was exceptional given some of the reasons highlighted here. It wasnt mindless repetition, but skill based and full of variables.

It comes down to being able to dodge heavy dmg abilities imo. That and giving melee based players a fighting chance by introducing skill based healing mechanisms and animation breaks to stick to target etc.

If this games pvp is even remotely like AC im in.
