This is DLC is really fun. I played for about 3 hours today and still haven't hit a boss yet. I'm sure I'm close.

It's fun so far I'm about 2 hours in. I think I liked sunken King a bit more but I'm still early into the DLC.

Yeah this DLC is way harder than the previous one. Tons of giants that can leave you rekt if you slip up. Fighting giants around npc healing auras items can be a real pain in the nutsack.

Edit - Both bosses are both like any other melee bosses, recognize attack pattern = win.

So I guess people didn't care for this DLC much? Thread has been a ghost town but we still have one more DLC to go. I think this is some of the best content in DS2 and some of the coolest items too. A ring that makes you disappear in a puff of smoke when you roll and a katana you seppuku with to buff are pretty sweet.

I finished it yesterday. It took me some time but I have to be with daughter when I play souls game before her bedtime story.

I loved this DLC. I like where they are going with the new items. The level design was very good. The boss fight are super fun. I loved Sir A***** fight area and I really like last boss fight a lot. The reused boss of the iron passage was OK but it finally gave me the chance to perfectly learn this fight. I was so much frustrated with the normal game version of this boss that I hardly gave any time practicing VS him.

To me this DLC was a bit easier than the sunken king but it's as good. It's probably the area that reminded me the most of Demon's souls. To me it's the most balanced area in the game. (Level design, boss, enemies, puzzle, etc...)

I'm sticking with my old Sunsword but some of the new weapons are really tempting, Ex: Fume Sword.

The DLC was pretty good, on NG++ the amount of red phantoms was a little staggering, especially before the Smelter 2.0. I'm about to go back through the Sunken King DLC since I just started NG+3 and the new one again as a warm up for the final DLC.

I actually never went through the old iron passage because I thought it was just a shortcut back to iron keep. Everyone was talking about the blue smelter and I was confused as hell because I didn't know what I had missed for a few days. Time to go see what all the fuss is about, smelter 1.0 is a joke.

I agree that he isn't that hard. My only issue is the stupid tracking he has and back then I was fresh from DS1 I had to adjust to that.

I'm using the new smoke ring to weapon swap from a typical katana moveset to smash people with a Smelter Hammer or UGS in PVP, it's fucking hysterical.

So I spent my whole (console) Demon's Souls and Dark Souls career playing melee. I recently bought DS2 and expansions to try it out on PC and, smartly, decided to try a Faith/Hex build organized around Lightning Spear...to do something totally different. For a long time it was a fun change of pace but, well, as you probably know, my build is now completely fucked. The damage on LS and GLS has been turned into garbage and my Dark spells don't do a lot of damage to the DLC mobs. Of course, I invested all of my resources in making awesome +caster gear and now, to be blunt, I am getting destroyed by those three assholes in the DLC (Varg,Whoever, and Whoever The Graverobber or Whatever). I am completely out of touch with melee builds since I usually have a no-spoiler embargo on these games.

Can someone please suggest a decent melee build to get through at SL150=170, preferbaly not using a Giant Fucking Club. I don't particularly feel like going back to farm a bunch of Petrified Dragon Bones and TT so I'd like some decent base weapons to spend my resources on wisely. Oh, I forgot to add, my Defender Greatsword (which, naturally, I infused with lightning to max synergy) is also nerfed to fuck it seems (or bugged?).

Anyway, I need help with limited supplies. Suggestions on what is working well at the moment much appreciated.

Should I just go through the second DLC and get a particular weapon there before coming back to finish the first?

If you think Smelter demon is a joke, I guess you can also defeat Ancient Dragon without toe-cheesing?

I've never fought the Ancient Dragon actually, seemed to not be worth the trouble. Now that I'm out of content I'll probably go back and try that out. I did Smelter 2.0 last night and it took me probably 10 tries, the run to him is worse than the fight. Only reason he's difficult is because his attacks are really delayed so you dodge too soon. NG++ my first time fighting him probably didn't help, maybe it did because of my +3 magic resist ring, but a +5 smelter sword was ironically doing pretty good damage to him.

Homonculous Mace is a pretty solid wep for a str type melee build

Well I switched up my build and did STR using +10 Greatsword and Havel's Shield. Beat those 3 dudes in 1-3 more tries. Much easier than trying to roll out or parry all of their attacks. I actually feel like fighting them again. Killed the Queen in the DLC and Sinh is beating me right now, but I don't feel like that's going to be too long. I think I'm enjoying the second DLC better so far. The mobs are more fun and the environmental strategies are more interesting. Haven't met any bosses yet though.

My only complaint is that none of the DLC weapons really seem much better than what I have. I guess Majestic Greatsword will be the one I upgrade and try out. That Assasin guy was funny to beat - bastard kept healing even after I'd blown up the spirit shard / curse thingy.

If you are looking for a build this guy just posted something that look a lot like mine. I use different armor set but the idea is pretty much the same.

I used to use the chaos blade but it was a tiny bit too OP for my taste.

Getting my shit pushed in repeatedly by the trio in the side area of Sunken. I guess my build is too PvE specific and they designed this fight like three PvP cheesed out characters, complete with a Havel guy moving like he is at 25% load. There must be a trick to this fight I am not getting, because the rest of that expansion was pretty straightforward. The other two bosses being gear checks was kind of lame, but I really liked most of Sunken. Guess I will take a break and do the Old Iron King for a while....

Are you playing on 360? I could help if you are.

That fight is a little tricky without summons. Doing it solo I would rush the archer at the back of the room and try to take him/her out ASAP. You can also use the lowers parts of the room to drag the two melee around and rush back up to deal more damage to the archer. The fight isn't too bad solo if you're patient and don't zerg. Kiting will get it done eventually.

Also, item list for the new DLC (no stats, just the amounts of various item types):
2 Boss souls
9 keys? (This is strange)
6 rings.
1 Hex
1 Miracle
1 Sorcery
1 Crown
1 Mask
4 complete armour sets
3 shields
1 twinblade
1 UGS
1 Curved GS
1 Greatbow
2 Sorcery Catalysts
1 fist weapon
1 lance
2 greatswords
1 curved sword
1 rapier
2 straightswords
1 dagger
