Are you playing on 360? I could help if you are.

That fight is a little tricky without summons. Doing it solo I would rush the archer at the back of the room and try to take him/her out ASAP. You can also use the lowers parts of the room to drag the two melee around and rush back up to deal more damage to the archer. The fight isn't too bad solo if you're patient and don't zerg. Kiting will get it done eventually.
The issue I am running into is that am sporting a very balanced PvE setup (tankish with Miracles, swinging BKHalberd) designed for steady measured fights. I cannot burn one of those three down before the other two come in and fist fuck me, allowing the other one to dart off and flask. It feels a lot like a DPS gear check to me. It amazes me how well the pathing works in that area, too, compared to every other part of the game. The AI knows to jump attack you and block the choke points.

To eXarc:
I got that info from a reddit post last week. So I wouldn't take it super seriously. Two boss souls looked funny to me; neither of the past 2 DLC had less than 3 bosses.

to Phaz:
I did that fight as a faith build using a lightning zwei in grym armor/hexers hood on NG+ and NG++. I wouldn't ever say that fight is easy. I've always put a summon sign down before a boss I get stuck on and after you help someone through it, ask them to return the favor (use the name engraved ring w/matching gods to make sure you get their summon).

Also, take a look at the zwei (lightning infusion w/sunlight blade), the 2h R2 attack will knock any human on it's ass in 1 swing. I use that as cheap CC quite a bit.

I did the trio with a straight sword power stance build on NG+ the first time I faced them... Died 5 or 6 times trying to burn down the archer, then I just decided that I would run kite as much as possible and just get in hits where I could. It took a while, but the two melee NPC's are MUCH easier to deal with after you've got the ranged guy down. I was basically running in clockwise circles for 10 minutes with yakety sax in my head.

I used a high poise shield for that fight and it was the key for me. I also came to believe that killing the archer guy first is a red herring. He is irrelevant if you only engage the other two beside or behind that pillar / outcropping on the left side of the entrance. So what I did was kill the guy with the Rapier first, then the archer, then at that point the guy in Havel's is easy. I counter-attacked everything and it was fine. If you rush the archer and let him switch to blades he will almost always get in an attack first so don't try and beat him to the punch. I felt a bit bad of switching to a pure STR build but my faith / dark setup was just turned into garbage.

Now for Smelter 2.0...

Finally beat this shit using the "Run around like a raped ape, Yakkity Sax" technique. What an annoying fight. The archer was the last one I dropped. Once I went for the dual rapier guy first, the rest kind of fell into place. I will never replay that fight without a human partner, because the AI phantoms have no clue how to focus on one enemy.

He said that there's always a potential for a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One port of the game, and that he's personally interested in working on those platforms.

Stood out for me, from that Polygon article

Bandai Namco says the new DLC, which drops Sept. 24, is one of the hardest sections yet. For players looking for a high-level challenge, one particular boss fight is said to meet their expectations. After that fight, players can continue to play a "challenge route," summoning other Dark Souls 2 players - even if they don't own the Ivory King DLC - to battle something even more difficult.

After players complete Crown of the Ivory King and secure the third crown, they can visit the game's King Vendrick for a surprise that Tanimura was keen not to spoil.

Smelter 2.0 I am actually a little irritated about. You are just fucked trying to solo this as a mele character. It is also a pretty annoying clear getting back to that fucker.

Don't clear - just run through. Drop down the hole to the left of the first switch. In the last cavern you can actually run past the big bad dude and get to the fog even if you are suffering that gay slow effect. In worst case, rush the big bad dude and draw him back towards where you entered and then beeline for the fog. I haven't tried Smelter more than 3-4 times yet (solo melee, as you say) but that's how I've been getting there.
