Hoping the new optional areas are serious ball breakers that take me more than 2 nights to get through

I'm a sicko

My understanding is that there's a boss in the final DLC that is really hard, but gets easier with each ally you make throughout (similar to Fume + healing statues?). So I guess if you want a really tough boss, don't be buddy buddy with the new NPC's. Then there's a "challenge route" to battle something even more difficult.

I could give a shit about the difficulty. The main thing I have liked about the new DLCs is the massive exploration and environments. The biggest flaw in the main game was how relatively short some of the areas were, especially the last few zones. The two new DLC zones are massive dungeon crawls with lots of secret nooks and crannies. I think they did a decent job with the difficulty. If you want to get your balls stepped on, go hit the new areas as soon as you reach them instead of waiting until much later in the main game.

My only real disappointment with the new content is a lack of interesting new armor for tanky builds, but that is a minor critique, at best.

Yeah, the DLC needed more Fashion Souls armor. That's all armor for melee's is for really. They really need to give melee armor special bonuses like caster's get. Only noobs wear the heavy shit.

I like the Drakeblood armor from the first DLC but yeah the second one was lacking. Shots from the third DLC look like there's a new ruin sentinel type armor set.

Huh? Alonne's and Raimme's armor sets are both among the best looking in the entire game...

Bah

Wanted to try the DLC, so bought the season pass for the PS3 since I have a character there with 100 hours on it. DLC didn't seem to work, and then I remembered that I had no patience when it was first released. Bought one of those US credit card accounts, and bought it from the US PSN store since it released there a day or so earlier than on my local PSN. Bought the DLC on the local PSN, and of course, they aren't compatible.

PSN customer service just says "not refundable".

Very tempted to buy it on steam now.

Once you dark soul on PC, there's no going back. I played it on PS3 for 90 hours, now 120 on PC, makes me shudder thinking of playing on PS3 again.

Eh, I got DS1 on PC and enjoyed it with the better graphics and frame rate, I just didn't like the hackers. On 360/PS3 you can have 99 of each item or hacked items, but no hacked spells and silly shit like on PC. It's a much more authentic experience I think.

hacking on the PS3 of all things is just as easy, it's only slightly more annoying on the 360 lol

I'm trying it wrap up the Iron King DLC, and Jesus fucking Christ, Sir Alonne; more specifically, the approach to Sir Alonne. This is one of those fights where you just need to resign yourself to getting your shit pushed in a few times while you learn the ins and outs of the fight, and yet every time you die you need to run that fucking gauntlet of knights. And sure, they drop a couple npc summon signs at the start, and yet those npcs are the most useless one in the game-you get in a fight, and one of them just stands around doing some random emote, while the other one runs around ignoring the enemies and chain tossing those stupid talking rocks.

Okay, done venting. Oh well, last fight I learned the valuable lesson that life gems actually lock you into the animation longer than estus flasks do; always thought it was the opposite, for some reason. Naturally, the life gem animation is longer than the pauses in Alonne's attack patterns, which complicates things if you manage to burn through your estus.

It sucks if you bother killing them and the lizards every time, but you can run past all of it.

Actually, my method is to stock all three life rings and do the clears. In this way, you basically have infinite attempts and if you eventually clear the hall, you have a nice stash of souls to use to replenish stocks with. The hallway in that instance was actually fine, because all of the shit you take on are just junior versions of him in open terrain. Compared to the Smelter Clear, it was a joke. He also was not that difficult of a boss, at least not with a stock PVE mele/miracle/curse setup. Once you get his moves down, the classic roll and counter does him in. Smelter 2.0 was an utter fuckover, though. Finally gibbed him by gearing up to spam curses and just dashed to him with two NPCs. I let them tank him while I spammed Curse based poison and Dark Balls at him. He is utterly stupid to try and solo or mele, though.

Of all the bosses in the DLC, I think Fume Knight and the axe curse bitch from the first one were the hardest. Both had odd unpredictable moves and required gearing in a specific way to handle the attacks. Both had random elements to them I did not care for. For example, if Dark Bitch summoned skeletons twice, it is easy mode victory, but if she spawned the bronze buttfucker twice, it becomes a much harder fight. I also think the smelter fight was largely a copout and I would have preferred something new or less build restrictive, like Gargoyle 2.0 or something Gaping Dragon-esque. Overall, though, the DLCs were a lot of fun, though not very co-op friendly for those of us who want to go back and help others out. Right now I have everything cleaned out, short of the Dark cult stuff (no point with my build burning all of those effigies) but I am shelving this until the third one comes out.

Magic Smelter is build restrictive? Maybe if your build can't handle swapping in a magic resist ring. There's nothing special about him at all, he just swings slower than the fire Smelter. He's a walk in the park for any build as long as you can get your brain to delay mashing the roll button.
