Time blocks, with 88 stability and 161 poise... what?
.
curious, did you actually try to play through an entire ng+++ whatever how many + using a heavy set and GSoA or did you just dismiss it? On some bosses you can't just keep the shield up forever, you'll run out of stamina and then you'll get killed because you can't fat roll out of range to regain your stamina.

Nah, I never use poise because it's one of the changes from Demon's Souls that I hate the most, and I always fast roll or ninja flip so GSoA is out of the question. I pretty much always use heater shield (for the best parry window of any normal shield) or balder shield (for the highest stability of any reasonable-weight normal shield). Eagle shield sometimes too, back in the PS3 days before they nerfed it into uselessness.

My point is that occasionally dropping your shield for a couple seconds to regen stamina is not "timing". You make it sound like it's a skill on par with parrying, which is just silly. It's the same thing I do with my shield now vs. bosses that are better to block than dodge, except much easier because 88 stability drastically decreases the amount of stamina drained per block and when you do get hit you take vastly less damage and don't get knocked on your ass.

Pretty much what Vorph said. Poise is about minimizing the pounding that the stamina bar takes, really. But I don't hate the fatroll build, because the whole spear setup from Demons Souls got kind of boring and having workable alternatives for people without Asian like reflexes was a welcome change.

I finally beat this stupid fucking faggy game. On the last boss I died 8+ times in a row trying to fight normal, so I circled around some object in the room which kept fucking with his attacks and won easy. I uninstalled immediately after to curb any temptation to roll a new guy. I've never hated a game more in my life. I will buy DS2 the day I kill myself.

Fuck

No lie, I didn't use the estus potion deal to time his swings, but I did do basically that exact thing the second time I beat gwyn. First time was me rolling/running around like a retard waiting for a second to shoot my bow (yes, I ran a bow build the first time through the game. Hi Pharis' Black Bow for being able to snipe almost every mob in the game from way outside their aggro ranges) for almost 15 minutes. Gwyn just stays on you too well to permit most standard strategies.

I'm wondering if Dabamf did the expansion. Manus pissed me off far far more then Gwyn ever did.

Yeah, I didn't even know you could cheat the parry timing with estus until I watched that video. Pretty cheesy, but the way the dude parried the initial lunge--which is definitely the hardest move to nail reliably--I got the impression he was only doing the cheat way as a demonstration.

Gwyn was definitely a letdown before the expansion, and all the new bosses are much better (or worse, I guess, depending on your perspective). Most infuriating thing for me isn't Manus though--it was cutting off Kalameet's tail.

I'm probably the only person that enjoying playing a faith build (16 str/14 dex/ 40/vit 40 end 40+ faith) based off the comments here but It's somewhat nice to be able to throw lightning bolts from range, fast roll in the cloth armor or regular roll in paladin/elite knight armor, overall I thought it was a great build for beginners) You start off pumping vitality and endurance while using a lightning weapon, and then later after clearing tomb of the giants (around 30/30 vit/end you can swap over to divine, which isn't that great until you've collected a few miracles anyways 16 str for claymore is great for early game since you can 1-hand a claymore or 2-hand the zweihander for power attacks on bosses, and then later on you can pump up the dex to 14 for the occult great scythe.. it's an extremely flexible build, you can tailor your equipment to the encounter, even if the damage isn't as insane as it is in other builds (between occult, holy, fire and lightning, almost every enemy will have "a" weakness). It doesn't have the insta-kill capabilities of most pvp oriented builds, but it's a perfect pve build and I plan on playing something similar in DS2.

Best part is you don't have to kindle every fire, having the extra heals really helped me as a beginner.

Faith is a nice build, but you should pick 30 for buffs and WotG and plan on using Obsidian Greatsword in the long-term, or commit to using divine weapons and go all the way to 50. Anything in between is just watered-down. 16 str/14 dex/40 end/50 faith/19 or 23 attune/remainder in vit is what I think I used. That was my 'RP character'--I only used gold-trimmed armor, divine great scythe and black knight shield.

I still want to go back and do a new playthrough, maybe i should try a faith run since thats one of the few I haven't bothered with

Everyone should try a 20 str/16 dex/30 faith build once. Obsidian Greatsword is good times. It's quite a challenge too, since you want to beeline for the DLC to get to Kalameet and chop his tail off, and that's not the easiest thing to do. I'm not quite there yet on my current playthrough, don't have the Lordvessel yet and I am making a lightning zweihander for tail-chopping purposes (probably Smough killing too, since I prefer to kill Smough first on the initial playthrough).

I enjoyed finishing this game <twice>, but really don't understand a desire to play through it again, especially once you've mastered the mechanics. Plus, the multiplayer is just terrible.

I'm kind of on the fence with DS2. I felt a sense of achievement completing it, but not sure if I want to abuse myself again with this game since I'm a spoiler free gaming type of person. Tomb of Giants really made me want to kill someone.
