Didnt in Dark Souls 1 if you died fighting a boss your blood stain appeared outside the fog gate? The Old Dragonslayer is currently standing guard over my blood stain... I really shouldnt even be fucking with that guy this early, but Ill be damned if Im gonna leave my souls there without a fight.

I feel dumb, I have played and beaten both DS1 and Demon Souls but I can't for the life of me figure out where my torch is. I looted one but can't find it or figure out how to light shit.

If you go to a bonfire doesn't it have an option "light torch"? I haven't used my torch at all, so I'm not sure. I feel like it's not needed :\

the torch isn't selectable as an item. there's a part of the inventory interface with the torch and a timer. once it's lit for 5:00 (I think) it goes out. if you switch out to another weapon, shield, or two-hand what's in your right hand, it also goes out. if you toggle at the bonfire, it should be another option to light the torch, and I also think you can light it from other lit sconces.

There are some things you can light that has benefits. So I light whatever I can. For instance, in the room with the blacksmith with all the chests, he is sitting on one too. If you set fire to the sconce in the room and leave the zone and come back, he will be sitting next to it, and you can loot the chest he was sitting on.

The hand things in the No mans wharf are also scared of torches, so if you run around with one they freak out. Easy to kill them then if you have spells.

So how many Hosts has everyone killed while helping with The Pursuer? I'm up to 3 now. Idiots keep jumping in front of my arrow barrage when I have a perfect shot at the guy.

Also, is it strange that I haven't been invaded a single time yet? I'm about Soul Level 60 (I think) and haven't had a single invasion.

According to GameTrailers the invasion and PvP aspect is kinda bugged at the moment. Might be fixed with the patch that is due tonight. Not seen a single invasion either.

Piping in again to say I suck at this game and I need help. I am level 14 or so. I have gotten a fire sword from that thing that spits fire. (That was hilarious) and I am fairly stuck on where to go. I am getting mopped up by bosses. And I am still trying to find the boss in the fallen giants area. Not sure where to go. Any tips would be helpful. I'll be playing all weekend when I get back from out of town tomorrow.

I was much better at DS1.

Not sure what I am doing wrong here with some things. I think I just need to get used to the new timing and animation sets. Lifting a shield seems to have a delay as well.

Utnayan:

In the area where you got the firesword, climb all the way back up to the bonfire area. In that room a ladder goes down into the fire area. All the doors are locked, but there's an exit to another area. Have you gone that way yet? That's about as far as I've got.

Man, me too. The first two games have really similar combat and I'm good at both. I still blow at DS2, 5 or 6 hours in. They changed combat pretty dramatically. It's frustrating, but overall I'm glad I can't just faceroll everything.

Some aspects of combat that are noticeably different:

Running out of stamina is really bad. Used to be you simply had to stop swinging. Now you can't effectively defend either. You'll get staggered, lower your shield, and die. Don't run out of stamina.

Everything's slower. It takes a moment to recover from a swing, hit or miss. You can't instantly roll out of harm's way right after a swing. This is the thing that's hurting me most. I picked bandit which starts with just 4 adaptability, so maybe it's worse for me.

You can't just run up and instantly circle behind half the NPC's for a backstab anymore. And even when you get one, you're not invincible during the animation. HUGE difference.

Parry windows seem much smaller, but it could just be that I don't know all the animations cold. I can't rely on parry at all so far.

It's super easy to get stunlocked. One poke from a spear often becomes 2 or 3. Especially if the first one took the last of your stamina. Maybe this is partly my shit starting adaptability, too.

I've only killed one boss so far, but in that fight the tried-and-true Souls' formula wored, despite the new combat mechanics: learn the moves so you know when to evade and when there's time to strike. Be patient, don't get greedy and swing wild.

Some tips to paths you can take.

You progress up the forest into the castle, the second bonfire there (with the old lady), go down ladder, and progress around the castle, you will come out on the other side of the ladder (there is locked metal door right next to the ladder, that opens up when you go around it, so you get a shortcut to the boss). There will be an elevator, step on it, and it will take you down to the first boss, the giant.

Remember to drop down the ledge after you kill the pursuer (you kill him after the giant, as the giant gives you a key to open some of the locked doors in the castle) to get great armor, and the first 100% damage reduction shield, it helps tons. Remember to boost the stat that increases weight capacity.

After that, you can go to the Heide Tower, and kill the dragon rider. There are several large mobs there, they hit hard, but their attacks are easy to follow. 3 of them activate up triggers that you can push when you kill them. Two of them extend the platform for the Dragonrider fight. The third one (when you go to the left) is at the top just before the cathedral. When you kill him, the button that comes up lets you activate a drawbridge that gives you the ring that limits the amount of hp you can lose as undead to 80%.

After you kill the dragon rider, you can go to the wharf (enemies there are around the power of the first forest/castle).

You can also buy the ring from the cat (lowers falling damage) and jump down the well in the city. Need the ring to survive. Recommend lighting a torch before you do it, so you can see where to go.

This also helped me some, just to get started. Lots of annotations to let you skip to the parts you want to know more about.

The main path you are supposed to take after the Ruin Sentinels is towards ringing the bell and the gargoyle boss right?

Still not found a spell vendor except the extra soul arrow from the first old lady merchant. And are there any merchants that lets you sell items? So many hollow and royal armor pieces.
Didn't look like anyone answered your first question, so I'll give you my version:
I found the gargoyle boss after the Ruin Sentinels as well, and still haven't been able to beat them so I continued moving on. I believe the gargoyle boss (bell tower) can only be accessed using a pharros lockstone. Passed the Ruin Sentinels was Sinner's Rise where you run into the Last Sinner boss. Then I believe that route dead end's out.

I feel like I'm progressing in a way that is pretty unorthadox from what others are reporting. I killed the Old Giant first and then the Pursuer immediately after. Ruin Sentinels was third and then I killed The Last Sinner and lit the first Primal Bonfire. From there I cleansed the petrified lady, killed the scorpion chick, then the congregation and currently getting my ass handed to me by the Royal Rat Authority. (Such a cheap fucking fight!)

I feel like I've been really thorough so far but clearly I must have missed something obvious because I haven't found the area where you encounter the Dragonrider or the Old Dragonslayer. From what I'm seeing, most people are doing those before much of what I'm currently working on. Not sure where I've missed that...

There's a stone doorway built into the cliffside in Majula just to the left of the house with the cat (if youre facing the house). Go down the ramp and through the doorway on the right to descend to the Heide's Tower of Flame area with the Dragonrider and Old Dragonslayer.

This is the best game ever made, once again. I am absolutely loving my dual wielding mage, i'm SL 75 or so and about to enter the Huntsman's Corpse area or the area with the Knight and the petrified girl on the door. I used my first branch and unlocked the petrified Wizard in the jail cell and got some nice trades from him for my boss souls. One primal fire down, 3 to go then who knows, I cannot stop playing this game. Anyone have any luck with whips or knuckles yet? Curious to see if they are viable unlike in DS.
