You can't turn mouse accel off in standalone and it is ten thousand time worse than Arma 2. First it's fucking inverted, the slower you move your mouse the more it accelerates your input, second the x and y axis are completely differently affected. It's insanely bad.

Weird, I could've sworn I turned it off on the first day it was out. Just checked and you're right, you can't turn it off.

Maybe some people don't experience it as bad as others based on windows sens or dpi or something, but for example if I try to highlight a small object in a house, I have a huge chance of my mouse rocketing up to the ceiling because I moved it slowly because the y axis is that fucked in combination with this negative acceleration. Or trying to turn around, moving my mouse quickly to do so, results in my direction barely moving at all. It's a nightmare. I seriously believe you should go to jail for having input as bad as this in a game, even if it is alpha. It is a sin against man and god. I don't even know how you would make input like this. Is it because the engine was used for a helicopter game or something? Rocket acknowledged it and said he'd fix it asap a week ago

First thing I did in Arma2 Dayz was turn the mouse accel way down. That is indeed shit if SA doesn't allow that.

I always assumed that mouse acceleration was an artifact from sloppy console porting so it is a little baffling in this case. Maybe it's something built into the engine that they have to remove? Which still doesn't explain why such a ridiculously horrible version of acceleration exists by default but we are talking Bohemia here.

For anyone still testing out standalone, or just started with it- a tip on something that confounded the fuck out of me:

if you pick up a pack of ammo for a rifle (5.56 or 7.62) and want to actually use it with your gun, you can't just drag it across or have it in your inventory. For the Mosin, you have to first right click "empty" on the icon, then right click on the bullets that come out and split them into stacks of five, then load them into the gun by dragging on and clicking chamber. For the M4, it's basically the same, except you load the split ammo into a 10 round cmag (unsure if there's higher mags, only found the 10 mags so far). I had to google it myself, so I figured if anyone was as fucktarded as me I'd save you the time of google fu or dealing with the usual assholery of the official forums.

Also, from personal experience the past few days:

Absolutely avoid disconnects, and if you're having network issues stay the fuck off the game. Had my character wiped 5 times because storms here kept cutting my power off. Not sure if it's just an isolated few but I've had friends telling me the same thing happened to them.

If you hear zombies aggroing you but no matter what you do, you can't spot them, quit the server and try another. If it persists just wait a while and try again after an hour or so. It's a weird ass bug and it can absolutely ruin your shit, as the zombies can still hit you but you have no ability to deal with them since they're, you know, invisible.

There's a whole lot of really unintuitive shit going on with this that's intentional but is more PITA than realism. The ammo splitting thing is ridiculous. You could just as easily script the whole damn process and nobody except for the most anal of neckbeards would give two shits.

The dev explained his reasoning re: the ammo crap is he wanted the ammo mags to be valuable. Sadly, he seems to have forgotten gameplay > realism ;p

I've played for many hours and still haven't found ammo to match a gun.

Loot is only reset at server resets atm I think so it's rare, especially around starter areas etc

If you haven't played DAYZ ever I would avoid the standalone entirely for now. The arma mod was a major mess , but it was a playable mess.

Avoid standalone at the moment and maybe keep up with the news on it. It'll absolutely piss you off and there's a very good chance you'll lose all your gear due to bugs... And losing gear you've worked for hours to get in a game like DayZ can be truly maddening when it's not happening due to actual gameplay. The trick to not letting DayZ get to you is to not get too attached to your gear as you're guaranteed to lose it at some point, but it's really difficult to do that when you're new. Plus even tutorial videos won't necessarily help because a lot of shit is straight up broken. I can't imagine trying to get into it for the first time with the way things currently are.

Get the Arma2 DayZ mod and play that. It's still really fun and I think it's definitely worth experiencing if you've never played before. The mods like Epoch for it have base building, vehicles, crafting, AI bandits, and an economic system (none of which are in standalone, and won't be for a long time). I still play it all the time, and it'll at least introduce you to some of the common concepts- plus it'll teach you in a brutal fashion how to deal with other survivors. Standalone at the moment has a total of three rifles, something like four handguns, and 5-6 melee weapons (melee is buggy as shit). The medical system is ridiculously byzantine for Standalone, and the most attractive thing about PvP combat- looting someone else's body, doesn't seem to work correctly. Bodies seem to regularly disappear. There's also a near guarantee you aren't going to find a gun in the starter cities.

If you're one of the four people on the planet who haven't seen him before, definitely check out Frankie's videos. Probably the most entertaining youtuber/streamer for DayZ and his vids show you all the possibilities the game can offer, plus teach you how to play the mod.

DayZ is probably the most fun and interesting multiplayer experience I've ever had in any game, and I've got a few lifelong gamer friends I met through it when somebody helped me with a broken leg or saved me from a bandit. Arma2 is like $20 these days and the mod is free. It's absolutely worth giving a shot for the money. If you decide to pick it up, let me know and I'll be glad to help get you through the rather brutal new player experience.

As an aside, for anyone currently playing standalone- if you want a rifle, go to the third floor of any school and look on the ground/shelves of the little storage room. As near as I can tell, for some weird reason it's a guaranteed military grade rifle spawn point. I've found something like 30 m4/hunting rifles so far.

Between Origins and Epoch, I prefer Epoch. Primarily because of the trader system, modular base building system (I'll need to post some screenshots of my awesome base), and the good support for AI/side mission stuff. I actually play primarily on a PVE server because there is a bit more flexibility to make some engaging PVE content. Server I am on had all sorts of missions and also has stuff like paratroopers that will randomly appear some mission in an attack heli to make things harder ;p
