wrath, as someone who has never played dayz at all, should i wait on this standalone, as a new player am i going to just get frustrated at all the bugs and shit?
shit like that ammo bullshit seems annoying as fuck.
Avoid standalone at the moment and maybe keep up with the news on it. It'll absolutely piss you off and there's a very good chance you'll lose all your gear due to bugs... And losing gear you've worked for hours to get in a game like DayZ can be truly maddening when it's not happening due to actual gameplay. The trick to not letting DayZ get to you is to not get too attached to your gear as you're guaranteed to lose it at some point, but it's really difficult to do that when you're new. Plus even tutorial videos won't necessarily help because a lot of shit is straight up broken. I can't imagine trying to get into it for the first time with the way things currently are.
Get the Arma2 DayZ mod and play that. It's still really fun and I think it's definitely worth experiencing if you've never played before. The mods like Epoch for it have base building, vehicles, crafting, AI bandits, and an economic system (none of which are in standalone, and won't be for a long time). I still play it all the time, and it'll at least introduce you to some of the common concepts- plus it'll teach you in a brutal fashion how to deal with other survivors. Standalone at the moment has a total of three rifles, something like four handguns, and 5-6 melee weapons (melee is buggy as shit). The medical system is ridiculously byzantine for Standalone, and the most attractive thing about PvP combat- looting someone else's body, doesn't seem to work correctly. Bodies seem to regularly disappear. There's also a near guarantee you aren't going to find a gun in the starter cities.
If you're one of the four people on the planet who haven't seen him before, definitely check out Frankie's videos. Probably the most entertaining youtuber/streamer for DayZ and his vids show you all the possibilities the game can offer, plus teach you how to play the mod.

DayZ is probably the most fun and interesting multiplayer experience I've ever had in any game, and I've got a few lifelong gamer friends I met through it when somebody helped me with a broken leg or saved me from a bandit. Arma2 is like $20 these days and the mod is free. It's absolutely worth giving a shot for the money. If you decide to pick it up, let me know and I'll be glad to help get you through the rather brutal new player experience.
As an aside, for anyone currently playing standalone- if you want a rifle, go to the third floor of any school and look on the ground/shelves of the little storage room. As near as I can tell, for some weird reason it's a guaranteed military grade rifle spawn point. I've found something like 30 m4/hunting rifles so far.
