I would not dismiss DayZ until the full release of the standalone. Maybe even a few months in after that. The work that modders have put on top of DayZ is not going to be remotely matched by the standalone. And the vanilla DayZ mod is very stable right now if mods are not your cup of tea. I doubt the standalone will have a stable launch, although I do not have much more than my gut and the DayZ release to base that on.

I really feel like the standalone is going to fail. It's devolving in to nothing but faffery from the devs and is getting so complex and "realistic" that no one is going to even want to play it anymore. I mean come on, can openers? Really?

I don't think it'll fail, but don't think it'll have the same feel that made the mod so great. A lot of what makes the world feel so harsh and hardcore was how tedious everything is, and it sounds like they're changing a lot of that. We'll see though.

Day/night is a global 4 hour thing, so no way around it.

Game seems like DayZ without colossal performance issues so far. Zombies appear completely passive from what I can tell, or they just cannot see in the dark at all. Inventory is fancy, but still clunky as shit and eating/drinking/equipping flashlight and shit is actually MORE of a pain in the ass than it was in the mod.
