Lol DC is just crumbling with all their shitty choices. If this got shelved, no way the Flash gets released.
its so shitty they dont even want to stream it.
Even though the film was putting final stages of post-production, Deadline has confirmed that Warner Bros.and DC Films will not be releasing its Batgirl movie on any platform, including theatrically. This falls in line with the new mandate put down by the new WB regime to cut back on the feature films premiering on the streamer and deciding what films will be released theatrically and which ones will be shelved and sources close to the project say word came down this week that this film did not make the cut.

Warner Bros. had no comment.

The film starred Leslie Grace in the titular role, Brendan Frasier and Michael Keaton reprising his Bruce Wayne part and was expected to bow sometime in 2023. As for the exact reason behind the shelving, sources say the film did not fall in line with the new strategy being implemented by DC Films as well as HBO Max. The studio is looking to make theatrical tentpoles with budgets at $90 million plus and from early footage seen this did not fall into place with that model (Batgirl was greenlit at $70 million budget.)

That's some serious spin doctoring there... The resulting film must not have been any good for them to just simply take a total writeoff on the thing versus getting it out the door.

it happens, same network had a different game of thrones spinoff in full production and it was so bad they shut the whole thing down and went with this current one.

Or it's all tied back to Ezra Miller being a nutjob and The Flash being delayed all the way to summer next year. Can't run a Batgirl movie with Michael Keaton as Batman if whatever timeline shenanigans were planned in The Flash haven't happened yet. That might also be why they brought Affleck in to Aquaman 2.

I think they believe batman leak with Henry coming back and slowly doing a build up to a big crossover. Shazam is the only character that has its own legs besides WW and that was terrible in the second film and the first movie was good but not great

it could be that too, but they still havent announced anything with the Flash movie yet except that everything is hunky dory and are still going forward with their release date next year. that movie cost them 200m. if they shelve that then i expect heads to roll. oh wait, heads are already rolling over there.

Disney's loss is WB's gain.

keaton apparently wasn't much in batgirl anyways. i think he's still in Flash, but i just don't see how that movie gets released especially if the trials around Ezra Miller start next year lol

Desk slapper.

Reminder Disney current CEO Bob Chapek didn't consider Alan Horn's position good enough to replace,

They merged the role with head of Merchandising and promoted the Licensing and Merchandising vice president to Alan Horn's old job

yeah so apparently due to the WB/Discovery merger, the new company can 100% write off anything they discard before August 31st against profits as assets discarded as part of the merger, but after August 31st normal tax rules apply. So thats the real reason Batgirl and Scoob was completely cancelled, it allows them to write off 100% of the production costs immediately while normally movies take years to write off. It didn't test screen super bad or anything, but it introduces new characters in a cheaper (straight to streaming movie) fashion and they'd rather save everything for theatrical movies only now, which they consider their primary release mechanism.

Its a bummer for streaming fans like myself, it means its clear WB/HBOs strategy is now theater first, streaming second, and no streaming only mid sized or big movies anymore. Scoob was also 100% completed but again since the budget was only ~$80m it apparently didn't feel good enough to release in theaters, where it would have probably lost money but taken 3-4 years to write off the loss + advertising spend (another $100m) while they could just write off the entire $80m in a single day if they did it before August 31st.

The bad news for fans is that writing off a product this way means due to tax laws you are not allowed to release the product for free or put it on streaming services (since you wrote it off as a complete loss), so neither thing will drop anywhere unless crew releases a pirate copy. I doubt anyone really cares about either thing though.

They still have a few days to decide if they are gonna write off The Flash movie which cost $200m+ and is probably the best candidate to write off entirely.
