I still play this a couple times a week, but I spend 98% of my time soloing. My character has existed since the game released and been max level forever, but I have yet to TR a single time.

I almost wear it like a badge of honor because I routinely keep up with or even outperform people with dozens of past lives. I don't think that says as much about me as it does the playerbase, but it's certainly not surprising because a HUGE chunk of people that play the game are 50+ years old.
Yeah I don't think it's a MMO that's going to capture the younger generation. Us old geezers that grew up on d&d enjoy the hell out of it. It's also pretty complicated game as far as min maxing characters. I'm sure if I tried to jump back in I'd be completely lost.

Hell, how long is the game been out for now? 12 15 years maybe?

If they could get a smooth and stable new 64 bit server and merge all the old servers into one "mega" (not very hard with the games overall population) server, I would be back for sure. Being stuck on a dead feeling server (Ghallanda) is part of why I haven't played for a few years, and I don't want to pay to transfer all my characters.

Looking forward to the 64bit Euro Servers. I can hardly do any jumping puzzles with my 150+ ping. Not sure how much else is affected by the ping rather than the atrocious lag problems of the game. DnD 3.5 was such a big part of me growing up, I keep coming back to this, hoping it got better. Feywild and Isle of Dread were such great expansions - Mograve and Myth Drannor were not. Sad.

Yeah. The jumping puzzles with server lag is infuriating. During the gay winter event I nearly smashed my fucking keyboard over it when doing that long event platform quest.

If it was just high ping I could compensate, but the crippling hitches make that shit nearly impossible when there's a lot of server traffic.

I've liked nearly every expansion that has come out, but Myth Drannor didn't do it for me because it had so, so much potential to be amazing and just.....isn't.

My favorite expansion is still Menace of the Underdark. Shadowfell is great too, and of course Ravenloft. Sharn after that, and then it kinda felt downhill to me.

Underdark and Ravenloft were awesome, but I'm surprised you liked Shadowfell so much. It's usually pretty low on people's list.

I'm glad they're going back to the well with Ravenloft, but that expansion was made a decade+ ago and I hope they don't sand off the edges to make it more 'palatable.'

I mainly just like the stormhorns a lot.

What is the deal with this game now, is it worth playing again at all? Back when I was playing last there was a certain meta with multiclassing where by level 12-13 you really had to use one of those to do anything. I think monk something.

It's still a great game, but it's not new-player friendly, at all. And, as always, it's got its share of bugs, but the game has a lot of charm. There's really no other MMO like it.

As far as the multi-classing goes -- I never do it and haven't struggled with anything, ever. In fact, my character was created when the game launched and I STILL haven't TR'd a single time, but I routinely outperform people with dozens of past lives. I'm a pure Assassin Rogue and solo R6-7 quests and soloing for rogues is some of the most difficult to do.

TL; DR Play what you find fun. You don't need to follow the "meta" to do well.

Do you use those uhhh mercenaries or whatever they were then? Or is it not soloable past the early teens still?

Soloing comes down to having a good build, good enough gear to get the stats you need, player skill and knowledge of the quest (traps, skips, layout, etc). If you have all of that you can solo from start to max level on elite or reaper1.

Not often.

They die instantly in Reaper quests. When I do use them, I just summon them at the entrance and use them to res me if I die.

However, hirelings are amazing in non-reaper quests and enables less-skilled, geared, experienced players to do content that they couldn't do alone.

Reaper mode is definitely not required to enjoy the game or even see all that it has to offer. It's just an additional difficulty that makes things much, much harder.

Yea I don't even know the term so I have to find some videos to watch to see what's going on. Are there any good content creators on YouTube covering DDO anymore?

Strimtom does a lot of build videos. People hate on him, but I think his content is fine and more than adequate for everyone except the douchebag elitist boomers that make DDO their life and have spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on the game.

Here's another decent channel for info. Unfortunately, the guy has the personality of a doorknob.
