Frak you! 'Nuff said.

In all seriousness I cannot understand why this show is getting shit on as much as it is. A bit cliche, yes. However, it is still leaps and bounds better than 95% of shit playing on TV.
I am watching it and I only had those two minor complaints .... it is your standard run of the mile cliche and has much deeper issues than my two things. I just choose to ignore them.

Leaps and bounds better than 95% of shows on TV? You obviously don't watch enough TV.

Right now I have about 30 shows I watch a week. I would put Defiance roughly in the middle of the pack. Not one of the shows I watch is a reality show by the way.

It isn't a terrible show but it's definitely not 'good' we can say it's OK.

I think I got them all, so like 37 but a few of those ended and I am too lazy to check which ended within the last week or two.

Amazon Prime just put out 14 pilots of new shows I haven't touched yet and Hemlock Grove I might do also. We finished House of Cards.

MOST of the shows I listed are good shows. Some of them are okay shows. Defiance is at that border line betweeen good and okay.

Game of Thrones and The Big Bang theory are the only two on that list besides Defiance that I can stand.

The problem was that the pilot was poorly done. First 30 minutes should have shown more of the past and what led to the current event. If you do not play the game, it will seem like a very shitty story line when actually the story line is pretty good. I do not play the game, but a friend of mine does. He explained to me the history of events and it helped better explain what I was watching. SyFy had better get that explanation out there pretty soon or they will lose viewership pretty fast.

As it is, I now just view this show like a small town western with some futuristic angles to it. It helps me to better except the premise. If you do not like westerns you probabaly will not like this show.
Guess I'll have to watch streams of people playing or wiki it because after the first episode... I dunno. It's pretty shitty so far(very 90s style story telling).

Have you watched them all? If you are taking Defiance over some of those you have a serious case of fanboyism.
Personally I haven't watched them all but I've seen bits and pieces of at least 90% of them as my wife has all of those plus more recorded on our DVR and sick beard. I am an extremely picky person when it comes to TV shows and short of nerd/sci fiction I can't stomach much. Anything with dumb as teens in it is almost always an automatic no and shows "everything always works out good and proper with happy sunshine and rainbows all around" theme just piss me the fuck off. Which is like 99.96% of TV.

Shows with endless and unrealistic love triangles/solutions/responses piss me off. Shows that teach you the best way to deal with hard problems is hope and prayer... Shows with idiot bad guys or genius bad guy until they turn into total idiots at the end..

Like I said I am picky.

Stupid shit to nitpick. 1) human governments knew aliens were coming 10 yrs prior, regular folks only knew like a week or so before hand 2) the Votans left their system 5k years ago, which means that unless they had some leet scout probe, they couldn't have known there was intelligent/technologically advanced life 3) For the last time, they didn't come to invade in the way you're thinking 4) the war did fuck up parts, but Votan civies were on the ground to. Nuking from orbit makes little sense when you're trying to live there 5) sure, you can maybe terraform any planet, but unless it can magically make a big ass iron core so your planet can deflect solar badness, then long term it doesn't do you much good.
I'm not thinking that they came to invade like independence day (although the Volge don't look like the 'lets get along' type) but otherwise mundane technology can be easily weaponized. I would expect them to bring along small spacecraft and other kinds of flying vehicles. I would expect them to bring their equivalent of 3d printers to rapidly rebuild their civilizations. I would expect them to mine asteroids for easier access to metals that would be rare in a planet's crust. (mining would also require explosives or lasers or something destructive) A virus could be engineered in a facility intended for other uses. Drones also have non-military uses. etc. They had years to prepare for a possible conflict.

I did not say 'nuke' from orbit. Nuclear explosions spread radiation, are more difficult to manufacture than kinetic kill weapons, and are more easily defeated/deflected/disabled than kinetic kill weapons; nukes even have less yield per unit of mass than very fast kinetic weapons. (relativistic velocity missiles) Any science fiction writer who spent a weekend on wikipedia would know that the 'simple' ability to transport objects into space enables extremely potent weapons. An object impacting at 3 km/sec delivers kinetic energy equal to its mass in TNT. A rod of tungsten dropped from orbit travels at three times that velocity. Aliens could destroy our military installations by dropping their trash on our heads.

And if you have vehicles to accelerate that mass it gets much worse; 1 gram of material traveling at 75% c would create an explosion of 11 kilotons. These kinetic weapons would be highly accurate, have extremely variable yields, no radiation, would be undetectable/undeflectable, and would require virtually no manufacturing or preparation from aliens that did not intend to go to war. Any collateral damage and dust blown into the upper atmosphere would be kept to an absolute minimum. And since they wanted to terraform the planet anyway, who cares if some species die off from a few years of impact winter? Assuming they don't have the capability to remove dirt from the air to begin with.

I agree with others that this is awful and I don't see it lasting. Gonna give it another ep or two but I'd rather watch Terra Nova than this crap.

40 hour work week. I sleep plenty. We do family events every weekend. Wife and I have a great sex life. I even read about a book a week.

Argue on RR? You think that takes too much effort that I can't watch a show at the same time? Come on now I am a professional.

To each his own, but I will say that this show is better than Terra Nova. Defiance is fine if they would just ditch the stupid "Romeo and Juliet" story line and get on with the rest of it. Thankfully I just DVR this show and fast forward through the commericals and any scenes involving teenage angst.

this is badly written AND badly acted.
did they already write out mia kirshners character? she was the only one i liked in those 2.5h of less than mediocre television.

on the other hand this seems better than terra nova and watched at least 7 episodes of that crap, so i am going to give it another week or two

Second episode was pretty bad and went about how I expected; pointless town drama with a tiny bit of the overarching threat of the week. The whole cop drama in a fictional setting bit has been over done lately and this setting is darned dull so far.

As someone mentioned Babylon 5 above... does any channel air the reruns at the moment? It would be fun to revisit it and see how its aged.
