Playing catch up on my ignorance. I was told elsewhere that with perf and efficiency cores for the scheduler or whatever you have to go windows 11. Does that mean buying 11, or is it a free update if you own a 10 key?

I'm looking at doing my new build since my 3080 likely doesn't fit case and I might use old comp for other things.

If I dont plan on OC'ing myself. But I would like to mine a little possibly (if that matters or is even possible with my LHR card), and otherwise just game. Would there be an argument for a H670 over a Z690 paired with a plain 12600/12700 non k. The discord mist sent me seem to be all wojack face over 12400's for gaming. Or are these bad idea's because the price difference is so small vs K's and a Z690? I did plan to keep to a DDR4 build.

Free upgrade to Win11.

Your budget matters as does resale and future upgrades. Z690 now just makes it easier to move to a K SKU in the future, but overclocking any modern Intel or AMD CPU comes which a rather large power increase (sometimes 2X or more), coprresponding heat increase requiring more cooling, and for (arguably) not as much benefit as one could get in the past. Modern CPUs and GPUs do a lot of auto-boosting and are fairly good at it.

Future upgrades a concer, though this computer lasted me like 6 years without upgrades really, I've never sold old parts before, this 1080ti might be the first for me.

By what you said, all the more reason maybe skip the k skew though for my purpose? Though if the price difference low enough, maybe not.

Browsing pc part picker, the numbers seem rather drastic between a 12700 and a k though, so a bit confused unless it's just wrong? (performance boost nearly same, core clock is 1.5 ghz worse)

You will be hard pressed to tell the difference between a 12700 and 12700K unless you are benchmarking. Base clocks are a meaningless number on modern CPUs. For media/office/gaming use they will be near identical. Sounds like H670/non-K will be just fine for you.

Both Asus aoruses, currently parts picker has me at $475 for the H670 and 12700F Vs $600 for K + Z670 asus prime wifi. Was hoping for a bit better price gap.

Xexx Xexx I kind of want to buy this. Looks like it would be pretty glorious for water cooling double 360 rads up top no problem.

Just looking at how much space they have left in the case after their build is pretty amusing. Thing looks fucking great

Well, I think everything is up and running. VMD finally was resolved.

If nothing else I would suggest going in to the Windows install with your motherboard's driver for RST and doing that during setup and not after the fact. Once RST was installed the VMD problems cleared up.

Now I have no idea what current benchmark tools are out there just to make sure. HWInfo says that the CPU is idle at 26-29C. Not going to fiddle with any OC, just have BAR enabled on the GPU. Will try installing a few things and getting ready for Elden Ring.

Passmark? UserBenchmark? I don't want to pay for 3D Mark.

Also, everyone runs to the samsung NVME SSD's. But should I consider cheap stuff like a Sabrent rocket for any reason? PCparts picker short on stats for it to be clear why there's a bunch of $90 ones before jumping to $140.

Not looking at your prices but the $90 may be Gen3 which are ~3500 mb/s compared to Gen4 which are ~5000? Although I do think Sabrent has a $110 Gen4 1TB that I saw after ordering my 980 Pro.

If you are looking for a gen 3 you aren’t going to get much better value than this one

Amazon product ASIN B08DKB5LWY
Gen 4 id say Samsung 980 pro isn’t worth the price tag anymore unless you can find a good sale. Quite a lot of options now at around 40% cheaper and only slightly lower speeds. I’m using a pny one that’s getting around 5500 read which is good enough for me at $120. Did get a 980 pro after I already got the previous one, but stuck it in the ps5.
