Are you guys more partial to G.skill Ripjaw or Corsair Vengeance memory? Haven't tried either. Leaning towards G.skill.
I prefer the Crucial Bllistix 1.35 volt low profile kits to anything else on the market for DDR3 at the moment. And I doubt we'll be seeing any new DDR3 products.

Those Samsung 1.35 low voltage RAM modules were awesome, but they weren't around very long at all.

I actually really need to go up to 16gb and I really don't feel like buying it at these RAM prices because I know this computer isn't lasting me through 2016.

Another G.Skill fan here. 16GB at 2400MHz DDR3. (Trident X series)

System is going on 3 years old now.

It'll be like those cheap licenses they sell to system builders, non transferable, no support, no warranty.
Ever since Vista, a key is a key is a key. There is absolutely no difference between an OEM key and an out-of-the-box key. Period.

The only key that is different these days is the KMS key, and there is only one client KMS key per SKU. The actual personalized KMS key is server-based, not client-based.

Well I got my i5 4690k, Asus Z97-AR mobo, 8 gb Corsair Vengeance ram, and Cooler Master 212 Evo cpu cooler. Will start putting it in the case tonight. That cooler is huge! Hope it will actually fit in my case. Almost seems like you need to support it due to the weight of hanging vertically in the case.

I'm switching from a Asus P6TD motherboard with an i7-920 CPU to a Z97 board with an i5 CPU.

i5/Z97 is restricted to dual channel memory isn't it ? I've been using 2 lots of 3 x 2Gb Corsair Dominator memory previously.

So my question which is really basic and which I'm pretty sure is ok - am I fine and dandy to just drop 1 stick from each triple set and use 2 lots of 2 x 2 Gb. ie Has matched memory always meant they are just compatible spec wise and not that they in any way need all sticks to run without any issues ?

So I'd also be okay also to just use 2 single sticks from each set in the old motherboard and use it as a basic machine for the kids.

You should be fine using 2 sticks, or even just 1. There's virtually zero noticeable performance gain from running RAM in a dual or tri-channel setup, when using standard, everyday stuff like web browsing, gaming, or simple productivity stuff like word processors. I doubt you'll ever notice a difference(assuming you still have enough overall RAM to run the programs you use after removing some)

Who fabs for who is fairly irrelevant. Samsung has had Apple stuff on their lines on and off for years and they're still acting like bitter rivals. It's still billions of dollars' worth of business.

I don't think a lot of Americans realize just how large Samsung is. As of 2014, Samsung's revenue was equal to 17% of South Korea's $1,082 billion GDP. They do so much more than TVs and Phones, even though that's what most Americans associate with them. They're basically the Korean GE. They're a multi-national insurance company, they are a heavy industry company building ships, tankers, bridges, skyscrapers, they're a chemical company, they own hotel chains & resorts, they're in the intelligence/security industry, they're a biologic/medical company, etc. It's pretty nuts how many diverse industries they are a part of.
