Am looking for an upgrade for a 7970 3gb...I play in 1440p for the most part - been a great card but it's lagging in some games recently.

I need a card that vents outwards (to the back) as my build is a mini ITX atm the card is vented from the rear so something like that would be ideal - know im prolly looking at a 970.. Not even sure what manufacturer made the card thats in my box. Plus as this is a mini build i only have a 600 watt psu.

Looking to play witcher 3/GTA etc but is it impossible?

Look for an Nvidia card with a "blower" or "reference blower" cooler in the description. I had a 660Ti with a blower, and it was great. The whole card is enclosed in a plastic casing 1 one fan that pulls in air on the side, then the blower blows the air out the exhaust in the back.

It'll look like this:

It's the best setup by far for SLI, as the cards aren't blowing hot air on each other.

Oh missed that this was for a mini build. Probably the closest thing to a true blower would be this:

*Most* of the hot air goes out the back port, but some does expel from the bottom as well.

Although I would have to imagine that a mini build, and 1440p gaming isn't an ideal combo. I think your case is going to run pretty hot, 1440p is going to push most current cards to their limits regularly.

Swapped my Lian Li Macrip-offfor a bench case. I really like the Lian Li, but I find myself tweaking the hardware to much--and the side panels usually keep more heat in--given I only have the CPU, Video Card, and PSU fan. I figure I'll end up using the Lian Li for something else down the road if I can find a use for it, but I'm pleased with the results of this DIY PC Alpha-GT3 bench case I just ordered.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
Far Cry 4
Metro Last Light
GTA 5 when it releases in a couple weeks
Witcher 3 when it come out in a couple months
Tomb Raider, even though it was released almost 2 years ago now, still has some of the best graphics of any game since then.

My 970 won't keep Far Cry 4, Metro Last Light, or Tomb Raider above 60FPS all the time at 1440p and every graphic cranked up. I almost never drop below 30FPS, but I spend a lot of time in that 40-50FPS range when there's a lot of action going on.

Good spot on Tomb Raider. I'll give it another play through. I'll keep FC4 in mind for when it goes on sale...have to keep an eye on games spending considering the wads of dosh that I've been hurling at Wargaming.net.

There are definitely Skyrim mods and GTA IV mods that can bring any video card down to single-digit FPS range. They're mostly insane texture resolutions meant for just taking still screenshots, you can't actually play the game with that level of graphic fidelity.

Some deep pocket super nerd is probably going to SLI some Titan X cards to prove you wrong.

I don't think I posted it but I started playing BF4 again strictly for how fucking beautiful it looks on a 1440p/140mhz monitor with G-Sync on my 780 TI. I can only imagine what it looks like in person on a 5K monitor.

Recommendations for a storage drive? Western Digital and Samsung have done me well, but the Caviar Blacks seem too expensive for just storage. Appreciate the recommendations.

NAS box with some WD Red Drives in a Raid 5. That's what I use for all my storage, and it's nice once you start using plex/kodi to have all your media somewhere central.

Still WD Reds if only a single drive for a desktop? 250gb SSD + Red drive? or only use if in a NAS setup?
