Assume you mean virtualization, but it's just IOMMU support that is missing. Most users won't miss vt-D on the K line and can run VMs just fine.
I did. VT-d is really useful if you want to give direct access to specific hardware for a virtual machine. I do a lot of virtualization so it's useful to me, the K version is also missing the TSX instructions which long term will probably be super useful once compilers start supporting it.

TSX feature helps minimize lock congestion on data objects. When you're making multi-threaded applications if you want to have two threads share a structure they need a lock to control who can access it. If one thread tries to read an object while another one is writing it will crash, if it tries to write to an object while another one is writing to it will also crash. Locks can become very cumbersome because you have to constantly check against the lock to see if you're okay to perform an action, and they can bottleneck performance. TSX instructions give you more flexibility by declaring a region in the code as transactional and the processor automatically detect when a collision (Crash) and roll back the transaction and start it again with using a lock. It's useless now but long term it'll be an important feature especially if AMD implements the opcodes as well.

I need to remove the bezel on my 24's at some point, but currently its not bothering me alot. Especially since im not doing any gaming currently outside LoL.

I was planning to change from my old 5.1 to a newer 2.1 speaker setup, but i want something with s/pdif. In all likelihood il find a good wireless 5.1 speaker solution or just get another 5.1 logitech.

"Good" and "wireless" for speakers/audio unfortunately does not exist.

Kind of a niche problem but it's something I ran into. Any of the older sandforce 1600/1200 based SSDs are not compatible with 8 series motherboards. Theres potentially bios updates coming but that's something to look out for.

I have a question about RAM speeds that I, embarrassingly, don't know.

I am building a SFF Haswell rig soon(TM), and the clock speeds of RAM are a mess as far as I can tell. From the specs I've been reading the i5-4670 uses up to DDR3-1600. Now, there are RAM speeds offered WAY over that, but they seem to need expensive hobbyist built motherboards. Am I wrong in assuming it is some overclocking thing?

I have no interest in overclocking (I keep my gaming rigs for 6-7 years), so I was going to pick up somelow voltage low profile memoryat DDR3-1600. Is this a reasonable move?

Just get DDR3-1600. Actually running your RAM at 1866mhz or 2133mhz whether through an overclock or just buying that speed of RAM is such a minute performance gain, that it is absolutely not worth it unless you find 1866 RAM for the absolute same price as 1600. I bought 32GB of 1866 RAM last black Friday because it was on sale and literally the same price as 1600.

From benchmarks I've seen, going from 1600 to 1866 maybe gets you 1-2% performance gain, often not even that, and only when doing things that are very RAM intense like video rendering. You'd be better served getting higher quality 1600mhz RAM with better default timings/latency than messing with anything over 1600.

If you're wanting to spend a little more money, more ram > faster ram. You'll get much more use out of going up to 16GB over 8GB, rather than wasting money on faster 8GB RAM.

I mean, if you're doing something like rendering/compressing some massive video, you might shave a second off of every minute of rendering with faster RAM, but 99.99% of the time you are using your computer, you won't see a noticeable difference at all.

Looks solid, good latency and timings, and nice low voltage and Crucial is one of the best RAM companies out there. Pull the trigger

So , have had this 5850 for 3 years now I think, and looking to upgrade. Current Card:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102857

I have a first generation i7 I think(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115202), 8GB ram(will most likely buy another 8gb when I stop procrastinating) and feel its time to upgrade my GPU before I think about my CPU. Probably looking at the #150-200 dollar range(hell current card was $300 when I bought it).

Any suggestions? I don't have any bias towards a certain mfc(nvidia or ati)

Just popping to say how annoying it is to have to take an entire pc apart to replace a processor cooling system fan.

The cooler is really nice, even if its older now (Cooler master V8) but damn what a bitch.

I was trying not to have to disassemble the whole thing, but the damn screws on the bottom were too tight to get going without taking the whole thing apart.

I'm not looking forward to the day my H100i fails and leaks water all over my case. On that day maybe the relief will be that it just broke and not everything along with it.

Same here, I have an H100i and it frightens me just a little bit. Especially with the video card being right under the processor/heat sink in a vertical tower, and the radiator being at the very top of my case. Either one leaks and pretty much everything is ruined other than maybe my HDs off to the side a bit.

That's why I've never gone with water cooling.

Too afraid I'd nuke the computer somehow. Water + electronics just is never a great idea.

With the new fan the i7 isn't going much above 40 C anyway.

Looking to maybe upgrade in a few months are the new 4000 series Intel chips worth it yet? Haven't seen the most stellar of reviews thus far seem to be better off getting a 3870K or something.

Not really, the best performance/$$ is an i5-2500k/i5-3570k. I think microcenter had an offer with cpu + mb for ~250$ total.

It depends on what you are upgrading from. If you already have a 2500K or 3570K or something from those generations, the performance gain probably isn't worth the money.

If you have something older like a first-gen i7 or older, then its probably worth the upgrade.

The biggest jump is the integrated graphics, if you use them at all. The jump from the 4000 series Intel graphics in the 3000-series chips to Haswells 4600 series graphics is significant. So it's a huge deal for laptops that run on integrated graphics, not so much for desktops which almost always have a dedicated video card.

I have an i7-950 and while I don't NEED to upgrade right now, it's just a thought in the back of my mind. Also have dual GTX 560ti's in SLI, so I should be good for the next year or so... however, in case Battlefield 4 for some reason doesn't like my setup, I might need to upgrade. Shouldn't happen though because even at 2560x1440 max settings BF3 never stutters at all in full 64 player matches. Only game I'm really worried about pushing it is Witcher 3.

Hookers and blow are a better way to spend that money than upgrading your current computer.
