I got my system built. I went AMD over Intel though. The cost savings helped bring the price closer to 1K instead of 1200+. The power is supposed to be somewhere inbetween the I5 and the I7. I went with a corsair case and 650 Watt power supply. The case is nice with 2 large fans that I can adjust the speeds on as I need. The outside reminds me of storm trooper armor. It has lots of room to work in.

I had a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium addition and thought that would work. I was wrong. This thing is giving all sorts of problems that range from turning my monitor lavendar to not being able to validate the disc. I go to validate and it just sits constantly spinning in circles. I did click the authorization tab at the top that I had not noticed the first time and it still spun away. I guess I will be getting 8.1 and redoing this part of the build. Was hoping I could get away with using the 7 disc.

Other than that, the building of the system was actually not to bad. It was kind of puzzle like with all the wires having to attach at various point on the board or the case. I can see why people charge what they do charge. It did take some time.
uh im curious how you saved $200 by using AMD. the intel 4670k costs $220 and its the processor you want to have. Did your AMD cost $20?

Unless you are using one of the APUs in which case id have to ask how did you end up spending $1000 on such a shitty computer.

He said closer to $1K. He didn't say $200. It probably saved him $50 or so.

(And it's still a bad idea.)

1) Do you have disposable income?

2) Do you like video games?

If the answer to both of the above is yes, then it's pretty much ALWAYS time to build a new computer.

Yes. Yes. Also I have a PC with a radeon HD6870 and am getting an oculus rift tomorrow. Also the PC crashes every now and then.

I just got the Sapphire Vapor-X R9 290 to replace my HD6950. Installed it on Saturday, but haven't really put it to the test yet. Time for some crazy Skyrim mods, I guess.

I think the 880 will be overkill for 1440p gaming but not quite enough for 4k gaming, so its in an awkward place.

I dunno what overkill even means. There's always settings you can turn up somewhere.

Today's overkill is tomorrow's standard, and next week's low performance.

Figure out where the price point is and stick with it. You will never overachieve for long and paying 300% premium is never worth it.

Nightblade | MSI Gaming Series

I can vouch for this beast here. This case is super compact and, importantly, not that tall. But I managed to cram a 770 gtx in there without a problem. It has a 600 W psu and can support a 680.
It's only a smidge taller than the playstation and goes great in my tv console. Also has essentially overclocking for dummies built right in.

Should I buy the new GTX880 when it comes out and build a new PC around it?
Tempted to do the same myself, just depends on my job situation when it comes out. Have the money to spend, just don't know if I'm going to be traveling a lot or even be in country.

I would wait.

This GPU cycle is all fucked up, and the 880s getting released in October are still on 28nm. Rumour has it that there will be a GTX 880 v1 & v2, with v2 being released early 2015 on 20nm. If you don't have a game worth upgrading for this fall, it's almost certainly worth holding out 6 months in this case.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Here's the real question with the GTX 880 in October...

I bet 4k starts to become real common in 2-3 years. Will the 28nm 880 have enough juice to push 4k @ playable FPS in 2 years, even on gimpy settings? Probably not. But I bet the top-end Spring/Summer 2015 cards will. If you buy a GTX 880 this September, expect to replace it by 2017. If you wait another 6 months though, there's potential to get 4 years out of your purchase, and for me, that's ideal.

If you don't have any specific games worth upgrading for, I say wait this one out. Unless you have no intention of adopting 4k in the reasonable future. Then it doesn't matter in the slightest.

What is needed for witcher 3 to run on near max settings at 1080p ? Hoping a gtx770 will cut it
