Augmenting Items in Patch 2.4 | BlizzPros Diablo

A lot of new cool features were announced to be coming with Patch 2.4 during the Diablo Panel yesterday, so if you haven't had the chance to catch up you can do so right here. One of these new features is coming in the form of a new Kanai's Cube recipe, Caldesann's Despair. This recipe allows you to sacrifice a Legendary Gem and three Flawless Royal Gems to give an Ancient item of your choice a boost to your main stat. This is definitely one of the more interesting recipes and should add depth to end game progression but, it doesn't come without limitations or restrictions.

Each item type has a different minimum Legendary Gem rank requirement that needs to be met in order to use this recipe.

Weapons require a rank 30 Legendary Gem
Jewelry requires a rank 40 Legendary Gem
Armor requires a rank 50 Legendary Gem

Legendary Gem ranks also determine how much more of your main stat that you're going to get out of this recipe. You will get +5 points to your main stat on the augmented item for every rank on the Legendary Gem that you choose to consume. As you can see above, a rank 50 Gem will get you an additional 250 points to your main stat. You also can't double up the effect by augmenting twice, if you augment the same item a second time, it will replace the current augmentation with the new one.

The fact that this can only be done on Ancient Legendary items shows that they are really trying to push set-less build viability and make the hunt for Ancient items have more incentive. Which could turn out to be very good for the game, because I don't feel like builds that are based on item sets should be the only viable option at end game. The reworked Legacy of Nightmares ring set is looking very promising in that regard too, but we will have see how this all works out come the start of the PTR next week.

So, tedious shit most of us will never do cause we aren't going to grind min-max for 3 month straight. Got it.

You can get to tier 30 of a gem with 100% success in 10 greater rifts. Dunno about the other end of it.

40 is probably the new 30 w/ all the power creep, though I really don't pay much attention to this stuff until the patch hit so no idea really.

It would be nice if they would introduce some new gameplay for these big content patches. I don't think adding more layers of grind is the answer to make players stick around past the first week of a new patch. Where's the new bosses? I mean real bosses, not a re-skinned trash mob with more hp (rift guardians). Fights like Adria, Malthael, etc are a lot of fun, and I'd love them to add mechanically complex boss fights as true end-game content, something to work towards.

The infernal machine stuff was a step in the right direction, but it was sad to see they just copied existing bosses for those fights. What's my goal to work towards with all this grinding and power creep they keep adding? To add +1 to my lifetime rift high score? Give me some completely new, interesting super boss that's only available on T10+ and requires a well optimized build and let me have a real feeling of accomplishment after I've spent a long time preparing a character to finally take him down.

They added set dungeons and new mob types. They're also reworking sets every patches so you can play classes differently, since sets are most of what defines classes nowadays. With LoN, they even added a way for you to play how you want without being tied down to sets(although it requires ancients in every slot more or less).

The new grind isn't really a grind for casuals, it's a new grind for bored people who play a lot and end up not having any use for the gem upgrade shit at the end of GRs cause they have only 1% chance to upgrade their current gems anyway. So instead they do 3x upgrade of a garbage gem, and once the gem is high enough, they use it to buff a piece of gear. Then they do it again. By doing this, bit by bit, they can do higher GRs, which let them upgrade their gems again until they cap out at 1% again, then they level garbage gems and so on. You can tell the system isn't designed for casuals in mind since it only works on ancients, so you need full ancients to benefit fully from it.

As for adding bosses, I disagree that it'd be an interesting addition. They could add new stuff, but bosses are boring as fuck. They tend to be super easy, especially if you spec for boss fighting. You could say "oh well then make them hard", but hard for who? Most of the D3 players can't even do T10, they play like 2hours a week and are still farming to get their actual build full items, not even talking about optimizing stat rolls or getting ancients. Then on the other end of the spectrum people with a lot of time have super high paragon, full ancients with fully upgraded new stat cube thing. The difference between the 2 is absolutely ridiculous. Mobs have several hundred times more health in the GRs the later group is doing compared to the casual. If you balance it for one group or the other, then it's gonna be shit. You can tie it to Torment level you say, but that's the same as balancing it for casuals, since T10 is shit. They could increase torment levels again to compensate, but it gets confusing for casuals when there's like 16 torment tiers, and it's unlikely you'd get torment levels as high as the higher GRs, just like T10 was pretty far too.

At this point what they probably need is a reset, wow expansion style. Which is why we need an expansion. That would also add new bosses, and they can rework old fights to be more interesting and shit. Uber Diablo was a much more interesting fight than any of the RoS bosses fights. Sure it was just reused bosses, but fighting several bosses is a lot more interesting than fighting a single one because it's harder to keep track of the patterns.

+5 main stat per 10 Greater Rifts, 5ish if you are dumping money in them? +5 is shit but you can easily rip through 2-3 of those in a normal night. It will be a nice way to get something out of the grind you are already doing after you hit the wall where all your legendary gems are 5% or less chances.

+5 per rank of gem. So min of +150.

So even better. I know last season I hit GRift 65ish with my group and we sort of stalled for a while. All my gems were rank 60+ so upgrading them was "a chance in hell". Would be nice if all those runs were added to my main stat on those items. Main Stat doesn't add a ton of DPS but getting a bunch for free is nice.

It's only on like 5 items depending on build but it's still nice. Assuming you can get gems to 60 pretty easy, that's 300 main stat per gem so another 1500+ in stats. Nice little addition.

Once you get to around GR65, assuming you have ancient weapon/offhand, gear doesn't matter very much. Paragon, group comp, spec, and grift composition affect your outcome much more.

Yes and no. It becomes the race against time. You have to spec for survivability so your DPS holds you back. Getting a 10% buff to your main stat will increase your DPS by a decent amount.

question: I've not played Diablo3 pretty much since i finished it. Since then, moved to a new house and i can't find my disc anywhere... i have the box, all the crap that came in the box, as well as the CD key that's on the booklet. If i were to D/L it, could i use my CD key and it be a normal version? Trying to see how to get the game back... my kiddos are interested in playing it and i can't load it for them :/

You should be able to simply grab the blizard client and download it after signing in with your account. As long as you registered the CD key to your account, which you should have had to do to begin with, you can download it freely.

Yeah for D1 and 2 you still needed the keys and shit, but for D3 since it's online only anyway, it's tied to your battlenet account just like a wow account, and just like wow you don't have to find your cd keys 10years later, you can just login with your bnet account and get in the game.

That said, I'd highly recommend buying the RoS expansion. Vanilla D3 is deserted, and not very good since a ton of the good features are in adventure mode only, which is tied to RoS. They'll be patching next week with the end of S4 too, so now's a pretty decent time to start playing, although technically the best time would be in mid january when S5 starts.

Yeah, most communities are dead right now with S4 wrapping up. If you play nonstop this week you might be able to pound out a couple of the season journey things. You can def do the get 70 for xmog. You won't get too far in gear farming though unless you have lotto winner tier luck. For the next 3 weeks people will be putzing around and trying the 2.4 stuff if it drops next week. Consolidating inventory and gear in nonseasonal. Getting ready for S5. When the new season starts everyone will be doing that for 5-6 weeks gearing up and farming the shit out of it. LoN + full ancient legendary is looking to be pretty awesome with those augments. Hell, that is going to blow DPS up on my favorite WD spec quite a bit. +100% damage for every slot will make zombie bears even more ridiculous than current set bonus.

Battle.net is exactly like Steam now. Well maybe not exactly, but in the sense that all your games are always available to you wherever you are by just signing into battle.net and downloading the client again.
