I foolishly give the game half a chance every few months just because I still can't believe how much of a disappointment it was, and every time I'm stunned at how poorly they did. They got the mechanics right and then completely failed to actually create some kind of purpose for the game. I'm not talking about MMORPG-like purpose, either; just a reason for playing that extends a little beyond the act of playing itself. You play to get gear and then... nothing. No real PvP, no ladder, no endgame, no meaningful multiplayer, no competition of any kind. There's just no goal in sight other than maybe getting paragon level 100, which is just a brainless grind that happens automatically and can't be considered a challenge in any way. You just kill monsters to get better gear so you can kill monsters faster. It completely lacks the final piece of the puzzle, the thing that makes a game take the step from being merely a set of mechanics to actually becoming a game. If they don't at least implement ladder seasons in the expansion, I'll have to believe that they've made a conscious decision to refrain from making the game good. It must be a little depressing for those of their older generation of developers who still do care about making good games rather than just milking the cash cow and trying to get away with doing as little as possible.
