Never played this series but looks fun from the streams I watched. What's the replay value of this game?

Note that the books also require to have the corresponding schools learned. This limits their usefulness imo, especially since a lot of skills aren't really that great compared to just using other standard stuff, but if you're craving for more skills or some specific things it's nice. The summoner stuff are especially nice at lvl 2 since I think to get them otherwise you have to summon them on cursed ground which is not as common and stuff. Oh and yeah there's 2 tier, basically Act 1books make the initial tier which is 1/1 or 2/2 schools, and if you use stronger books, supposedly in act2 you get stronger versions(mostly aoe versions and some just increase the skill). Can find all the skills on the fextralife wiki.

Finished Act1, last fight was pretty cool. A lot of quests kinda broke though, not sure what I was supposed to do with them or if they're just meant to break, I think I've done most of the things but eh.

I switched my casters to wand+shield, I don't really use the normal attack much anyway now that I have a good amount of skills and the shield makes a HUGE difference especially since the active is great. My only squishy char now is my rogue but she just runs around killing shit all over the place, while the other 3 will often just stand in one spot and stack the bodies with teleport then just self aoe. Shit's hilarious with the magic armor per turn aoe regen spell and it's way more efficient that way.

Well there's a lot of branching paths, lots of dialogue choices and enough companions for 2 playthroughs I'd say. Tactician(hard mode) is also a good thing to play it again. There's also too many classes, even considering general archetypes, to do everything in one playthrough. I don't have a summoner, necro or archer in my group for example, and my warrior is 1h+shield but I could do 2H or DW instead. So 2 playthroughs probably. And since it seems the game will take me like 60-80hours on my first playthrough, that's quite a good amount of time.

Recommended to play the first one before this one or doesn't matter? I don't really want to drop a whole $90 to get both atm since i'm assuming I could just wait and pick up the first one for 50% off on winter sale or something.

They are standalone stories with apparently some throwbacks to the first one. I may play through the first after this one.

no need to play the first.

Story wise this one takes place 1000 years later. Smack dab in the middle of the EARLIER games.
It seems to be a lynchpin uniting the entire history. So, the entire franchise is getting referenced alot here.

Timeline.
Dragon commander-10k years in the past. first dragon knight/emperor. also lizards, dwarves etc co-exist.
Divinity: Original sin 1k years in the past.
These 4 occur in a 30 year period or so.
Divine Divinity-Ascension of Lucian the Divine.
Beyond Divinity-Damiens return.
Divinity: Original sin 2.
Divinity 2: Dragon knight

OS 2 seems to be concurrent a bit. Divinity 2 opens with Damien rampaging across the world with the Black ring, spreading Chaos. Lucien was betrayed and stabbed in the back by a Dragon knight. Dragonknights were outlawed and hunted down by Slayers. (Divinity 2 you play a slayer who hunts down the last Dragon knight. the Dragon knight infuses you with the dragon soul, and YOU become a dragon knight.)

The games have some oddities. Orcs, etc existed throughout. Lizards, undead, dwarves introduced in Dragon commander, and OS 2.. the gods as well, were not part of the earlier games stories.
Source was invented for OS. Wizards as immortal beings existed throughout all the games. Maxos, Beleghar, etc have been in pretty much every game. unexplained until D:OS2 now.

Previously, Chaos was the bad. Demons, and chaos wizards, and damian all served Chaos. Divinity:OS intruded the void. Atm, I think void and chaos have been retconed to be one and the same. not certain.

How is the coop play?
It's okay, but having to all be online at the same time kind of sucks.

The one glaring weakness of the whole thing is the "listen" feature. If someone is talking to another NPC to advance a storyline, unless you go up to that NPC at the same time to listen, you won't know wtf is going on.

Having a hard time deciding my last companion in my solo game. Doing Fane for sure, most likely red prince as the second.....can't really decide on the last slot at all. Ifan sounds like the least interesting though.

I'm about to restart. Someone yell at me if something I say isn't the issue I think it is.

Selling, am I correct that you want barter on the specific person selling? So I'm debating just having the tank (high carrying capacity) go all in on lucky find and barter and do 100% item management. Trying to transfer shit to the conjurer seems game-ruiningly tedious to me unless I'm missing some button somewhere. Nothing ruins a game for me as fast as useless tedium.

For combat, I am finding my rogue very good and very one dimensional. Casters are just downright more cool. I'm thinking of doing 3 mages. I realize I won't be a sam deathwalker burst dps god, but hopefully more fun. I'm not playing with ironman (honor I think?) so if something becomes a challenge to overcome but is doable after solving it... good.

Correct on barter.

Most fights are doable regardless of class comp even on tactician difficulty they just require a bit more creativity and 3 mages leaves a lot of room to be creative.

Fortunately I've not had any issues with quests or various bugs (aside from keybind resets) I've been reading about. I've sunk a solid 30 hours in so far and I have very few complaints that aren't quality of life things.

Go to the wiki page (Divinity Original Sin 2 Wiki | Divinity Original Sin 2 Wiki) AND read the starter section if you want to get a good leg up on the first 5-8 hours. I dove right in and not going to lie was abit all over the place heh. On my 2nd play start looked at that and it didn't really spoil much but made things a little more clear.

One thing i'll point out that i just finally started doing since i was going into some harder areas that i couldn't face roll early on, you can unchain your people and basically arrange then strategically before walking into anything that triggers a fight. This includes summoning creatures on your conjure so they can be out and ready and have 2 (can summon 3 total but will expire fast out of combat). So even though i think he will suck i'm going ranger as one of my guys (fane) for timestop and i always get him setup before tough fights and people really spread out so they don't get mass AE'd the first round.

On lvl 6 on this play through and i'm so glad i restarted (believe i could respect in chap 2 i heard someone say but oh well ::emoji_nose:. My inquisitor with full str build + splitting points in necro and warefare is way better this time around. Using dual weapons since i got the vipe sword which is so much better then 2 handers so far but intend on keeping him 2 hander long term.

Also look at that wiki to see who sells what skill ups; sometimes if you talk to them and say the wrong thing with 1 person you can't talk to them again and can't pick to trade so you can talk to them with someone else. When you do that you can open trade with the trade button mid conversation so i'd suggest doing that right out the gate. Also it matters who is talking to a npc so make sure you have the right people talking. Usually if its an origin specific quest the related guy will say "i want to to talk to them etc". Just make sure you don't kill vendors before buying shit. The biggest one i'll warn you on is the pyrmoancy seller is a lizard that sebillia or whatever her name is will kill if you let her talk to him. Just have her away from him and you will be fine. I fucked up and forget and saved after so i switched my wizard out haha. But i'm really liking inquistitor > rogue > hunter > conjurer. I go glass canon on my conj and after summons are up his dual wield wands X 3 attacks fucking is pretty damn good damage.

Oh for any of you who may know, any really advantages of 2H vs dual wield on a warrior? Since attacks and oppurtunities use both dual wield weapons, seems like dual wield might be better since you get 2 items for stats? I know the base damage of 2 DW so far seems like its > 2H. 2H gets 5% crit damage multiple per skill vs dodge on DW but aside from that starting to wonder...

Made it to Act 2 tonight. A tip for anyone still in Act 1: do NOT proceed to Act 2 until your party is at least level 8 (there will be a very obvious prompt).

DW has a damage penalty, 50% on offhand I think not sure how it works, but it's not that much better damage wise. Also 2H seem to have better stats than 1h weapons once you get high enough levels(at 8 or so they start getting +2str, while 1H are still +1str, interestingly shields are +2 too so you get +3 total with 1H+shield). You do get double procs and stuff like that though.

Main advantage of 2H is the 2H passive itself(dual wield gives dodge which is very meh, 2H gives crit damage which is good especially when you use Enraged) and the range, 2H weapons have more natural range, meaning it increases your circle for attacks of opportunity(blocks a large area) and you can hit stuff further/aoes are large(whirlwind for example). Spears have even more range but they're finesse weapons which comes with some issues like having to use leather armor(more magic armor but less physical armor, which can be good mind you) and not having weight increase. They're also not super common so you can run in issues when gearing up, while going standard 2H str weapons you can use any type that drops.

I cheesed the voidwoken deep dweller fight pretty bad. was pretty amusing.
got my ass kicked coming from the front, many times. utter failure, on the ground, on the north platforms, south platforms... So, I backed out past the pigs, went up the bridge, and came down by the rat. Stealthed the entire party. One by one teleported myself up to the deep dwellers ledge. to be even more amusing, I used the statue before even engaging. (I didnt even know what it would do at the time.) upon leaving the statue, it threw me into combat immediately. but, armed with Bless, on the entire party, and only one path of entry, took him down. Teleported him directly into being flanked and burned him down in like 2 rounds or less. Skels were still a problem. burned 2 res I think, and kept using TP to throw them off the cliff, and make them run back.
