Doctor Who

Smith regenerates into the new Doctor at the end of the Christmas Special which is traditionally shown either Christmas or Boxing Day. That means we are around 2-3 hours of runtime (allegedly the 50th is now back to being 90 minutes) away from him disappearing from the show.

Less than a full series? The only Doctor who has had that distinction (up to now!) is McGann who had the single US tv movie outing. The next time Doctor Who started up it was Ecclestone, apparently mere hours/days after regenerating from his previous incarnation. He had a single full season and was replaced by Tennant after sticking to his original plan of only doing a single season to help the show get off the ground again.

The trailer for the other special has "somewhat" leaked though, the following link is to a camrip of it for the truly impatient, of which I shamelessly admit I was one as I just watched it

It does look good!

The man saying "piss and vinegar" early on in the trailer, is that Brian Cox?

An official trailer release probably won't be far away.
Looking forward to this almost as much as the 50th.

I didn't realize that like everyone on Dr. Who is Scottish. Like that's a requirement now. Well, ok, Amelia and Donna were kinda obviously. Nor did i realize that Doctor Donna was apparently something of a 2nd teir comedian before her stint on Dr. Who?

And what the hell happened to Rose's mouth? I'm not trying to be mean at all, was she in a car crash or something? It sounds like she got some serious denture work done. It's the whistling hiss on her S's (and plus if you look between years... her mouth got bigger and her overbite more pronounced).

These are the sorts of things that separate the true fans from the guys who just think Dr. Who is a nice little show.

Something tells me this is a gimmick. A prime time reveal for a new Doctor? Has to be a woman or something.

She wasn't 2nd tier

She was probably the funniest female comic since Saunders/French

Billie Piper's horse mouth has definitely gotten worse since she got pregnant. Not sure why.

Yeah casting of Catharine Tate for the xmas special was stunt casting of a big guest star for the holiday special in order to pump up the comedy elements. It would be the equivalent of casting Tina Fey in a special and then having her turn around and say that she was up for doing a season of the show as a regular.

They really are making a big deal about this LIVE-around-the-world announcement of who the next Doctor is. This makes me think that it is someone whom we actually have a chance of recognizing. Even among the Brits I think a lot of people reacted to Matt Smith's announcement with rapid Google searching.

Catherine Tate was 1st tier for a year or two but she didn't have any staying power, it's like she left Comedy after the Dr Who stuff. She is off the radar now.

Didn't they do EXACTLY the same thing as this for the Matt Smith reveal and everyone was like "who the fuck is he?". This whole thing is just trolling from the media, we can have the "will he be black/female" discussion and my favorite was putting the Robb Stark actor as a candidate just before he was killed off.

They didn't do a live announcement on simulcast TV with the yanks (just a press release and Dr Who Confidential stuff with BBC supplied pics of him stood next to the Tardis) so I suspect they have got someone bigger than Matt Smith (at the time of his reveal!) this time round. I suspect my faint hope of Ruth Wilson is completely gone with them sadly retaining Coleman for another season.

Mostly I hope it's not Capaldi because I'd want him to react like Tucker all the time

I love Peter Capaldi, and he's perfect for the Doctor. But I'll never get "John Frobisher was a good man." out of my head when I see him.

He's a cracking actor indeed and would bring some gravitas to the role. I was susprised to see him crop up in the second series of The Hour but I loved his work in that, such a great contrast to the Tucker work. The interaction between River and a Capaldi Doctor should be worth the entrance fee alone though hopefully!

I just dislike the Clara character so much I'd want her to be Tucker'd every time she opens her smug mush

Daniel Rigby's odds have crashed down this afternoon, he's now 2/1 at Ladbrokes.

William Hill have just closed their betting page after also seeing a drop in Rigby's odds. Coincidence? We'll see on Sunday or earlier if any of the papers snag it. Paddy Power have closed theirs as well.

Edit: All the bookies pages have gone now, they seem convinced the name has leaked already.

Why hate clara? The character isverysimilar to Amelia in execution. She's just short and dark instead of giant and ginger, and she doesn't have a husband.

I tell you who I hate. Martha Jones. Please no more martha joneses. It's not that she wasn't pasty white -- I liked that part of her. It's just there just wasn't much of any chemistry between her and the doctor. Not sexual tension, there's probably a little too much of that with the past few doctors. Just chemistry. Like it was hard to believe that the doctor actually gave a shit about her one way or the other.

Isn't that more or less why she left The Doctor when you get down to it?

Martha jones was the best companion in the modern era. What you didn't have in her was a helpless kitten that the Dr constantly had to gather up before he could run. I'm not sure how you translated that into chemistry, but to each his own, I suppose. She basically started out as competent, or more competent than the other companions were at the end of their runs.

And if Catherine Tate = Donna, then she's def still doing comedy. She was on the last couple seasons of the american version of the office. I've seen her in a few other places too.

I always dread these moments. Never know if I'll warm up to the new doctor or not, even though it seems they always seem to get a great doctor.

Well, think of how many of us dreaded Smith when he was announced, but overall he ended up being one of the best Doctors, IMO.
