I was excited this week to finally have moved up into the High bracket, but just now won a game with an AM who went Vanguard --> Eth Blade --> Vlad's --> SKADI. We all commended him for showing us this new build at the end

That is a terrible build.

Does she want to have your babies intrinsic?
Well obviously, who doesn't? Nah, it was a very nice response to a completely innocent email. She said how overwhelmed she was and how great the people were. Only question she didn't answer was whether or not she got to do any spots on her local show about dota. They may have posted something on the affiliate page now, I asked back on umm... Friday?

Vanguard on AM has fallen out of favor, but I've always said it's a decent item in pubs where you can't rely on your teammates to dodge fights until you get BF+1 core item up. Vanguard helps you far more than BF in any early mid-game fights, it's cheaper, and it's a better farm item than people give it credit for.

I'd still go BF 4/5 games, but don't write off Vanguard completely.

I don't know. For my money vanguard is the worst item in the game. It's over 2000 gold, gives you pretty much nothing over its components, and falls off horribly beyond 20 minutes. For an antimage that's worried about fighting early, you would almost always be better off getting a poor man's shield into a naked vitality booster and ring of regen. With that you get +6 agility, almost the same block, the same +HP, the same +regen, and you can use the ring of regen/vitality booster for your heart and battlefury, making them both happen around 1000 gold faster.

Even a hero like Axe, which you would think would be a perfect vanguard carrier, is better off just getting a mek for his team or going for a bloodstone. Make it so you can disassemble the thing and it would become a lot more relevant.

I think shields in general are under rated in pubs. Vanguard really lets you stay in lane as a melee carry. It isn't fashionable at the pro level but I still think it is a solid item.

I won't disagree with gmstbfla that it is probably better to just get PMS and skip Vanguard on AM

Vanguard's advantage over PMS+Booster+Ring is that it allows you to jungle efficiently earlier, which is why I said it's a better farm item than people give it credit for. 16 extra average damage blocked and 1 more HP regen adds up quick when jungling a low level AM without BF. Still, I'll concede that PMS(+Booster)+Ring is probably better.

Vanguard really should be possible to disassemble, considering how weak the "recipe" boost is.

Aren't you better off building vlad's in that case ?

I find it interesting how many people just start with quelling blade and refuse to buy shield even when they guessed the lanes wrong and are against 2 ranged heroes that will make them burn through the regen in 2 minutes.

Without doing the math, I'm fairly sure Vlad's doesn't leech more life at low level than Vanguard blocks and regens. It doesn't boost your early game team fight potential much either, which is the only reason you wouldn't just rush BF in the first place.

But yeah, stout shield is the best starting item in the game on any melee in pubs.

Vanguard is absolutely terrible and I can't think of any hero or situation that would ever make me buy it. As was stated, it offers almost nothing more than its components and there are more cost effective items that will do the same thing and be more useful after dissassembling. Whenever I see someone buy vanguard in a game, it's a pretty clear indication that player is not very good and follows the start up guides.

Do yourself a favour and forget that item exists at all until they change it, it is always a waste of precious dollars.

Vanguard has all the right stats for a starting item, but all the wrong amounts. If it blocked 50-60, added 1more health regen and added a bunch more health I think it'd be a great item, or if it disassembled but then a lot of heroes would run around with vanguards, which I guess is fine to an extent.

On Vlad vs Vanguard, have to remember that the block is evened out to an extent by having 5armor. Lifesteal+2hp/s vs 6hp/s will depend on your level and stats growth as well as other items, but it should be kinda close. Then you also get a bit of mana regen which is nice on most heroes. The extra health is definitely nice for teamfighting, but so is having a 5armor aura and vlad will scale better eventually.

Other decent choice is Mekansm, even if your hero isn't the typical Meka carrier, if you can afford the mana cost(arcane boots or low reliance on spells), it gives the same health via the heal(assuming you're not stunned from 100 to 0) as well as a team heal and similar regen/armor stats.

Finally, the most common recent choice imo is simply to get Tranq boots. They'll give you the regen you need to jungle if you have a shitty start and are extremely cheap since generally you will have brown boots anyway, and they disassemble later when you're bored of them, with the left over items combining either into a vlad or simply to see them(can also use the ring of regen in hood/pipe or meka and possibly force staff). Especially because of these boots, you shouldn't be buying a vanguard. Buy tranq, a vit booster if you feel you need it, a stout shield from the start and you have more or less the same thing for 400g cheaper and with very little wasted gold.

Tranq boots killed Vanguard.

I have a Battlefury and a Dragonclaw Hook if anyone here is interested. I'd prefer to do a paypal exchange for them but I would entertain other offers. PM me if you're interested to discuss more.

In hon vanguard was considered op because the fighting that went on under a tower really made towers useless if you had it. They actually nerfed it by making it lose stacks. Hon balance is lol.

So was Puppey actually trying to come on to the reporter in his semi-composed state of shell shock?

When he said I'm with two things I love right now... I thought oh hell no he isn't gonna. Then he did.
