Biggest thing holding the original back was the mediocre gameplay. Funny how if you actually put some effort in you can let the player assemble their squad without the main story taking a backseat to unending recruitment and loyalty missions. Which is not to say ME2 is bad of course but the gameplay was such an unbelievable improvement over ME1 that people tend to remember it a bit more positively than it really deserves. ME3 was almost as big a gameplay improvement over 2 as 2 was over 1 and the story was structured much better but obviously there was a lot of other stuff wrong that has been discussed to death already.
My biggest beef with the trilogy after the bungled ending was the way that every sequel pretty much completely abandoned any plot threads the previous game(s) had created.
