The new class starts out really OP (from level 6 onward anyway) and then gets kinda bland in the 20's. I think you're supposed to run around finding monsters to send to the Monster Arena in order to unlock the good abilities and get more out of it.

Looks like characters on their 2nd class have significantly higher stats than characters on their 1st, so I'll prolly just evolve the MW into a Sage or something. Characters on their third class are even more powerful but that's probably overkill for anything except maybe postgame. It's diminishing returns each time you do a new class.

What is a barv?

I googled this. Looks like it was an armored tow truck to get disabled vehicles off the beach on D-Day.

Or how Square-Enix is going to need a tow truck to bring themselves out of bankruptcy in a year with the DEI bullshit.

Sorry if this has been discussed already, but I've got 18 hours of plane flights coming up and was thinking taking up this series that I've somehow never played. Should I start with DQ1, and which release on what platform?

I wouldn't, since DQ1-2 remakes are coming early next year. You can just start with DQ3, it's a prequel which is probably why they did the remakes out of order in the first place.

I assume the platform choice comes down to Steam Deck vs. Switch? Steam Deck is a good choice because there's mods to fix some of the censorship and woke faggotry and they're adding more and more corrections all the time. Also, they've fixed the shitty mobile-game UI to not cover up the first character and some other QOL stuff like that. Downside is you're stuck with Denuvo unless you jump through a bunch of hoops to emulate the Switch version (and while there are mods for that, they usually lag a version behind).

Switch version is basically the opposite. No mods (unless your Switch itself is modded too) for the censorship or UI, but no Denuvo infecting your system either.

I have a Switch but no steam deck. I was assuming I'd emulate a legacy platform on my phone, but I can play something else and do the HD remakes on PC later. I'm not so interested that I'll pay $60 for the Switch version.

Thanks.

The OG versions are fine too. The first few were NES games. They also had remakes on GBC/GBA/DS. If you are going to be doing a lot of emulation you might also enjoy a dedicated device for it over using your phone, but a newer phone with a big enough storage will do fine. A recent tablet would be better just for screen size, but whatever you got you can make do with. There are emulators for all the things out there.

Wait is there a reason they made the DQ3 remake before 1+2? I missed out on most of these but I know the first 6 are 2 trilogies and the others are self contained stories like how FF mainly does it. Was thinking about doing DQ11 after I finish SMT V (awesome game btw) as this game has totally left me wanting more JRPGs and there's a ton to choose from right now.

Yes, it's a prequel and Yuji Horii decided that people should play the games chronologically instead of the original order of release.

Get this new DQ3 and get it on Switch. Then 1+2 when it's out next year, or jump ahead to DQ11 (probably the best one)

Beat the game, was great until the last couple hours. It goes totally off the rails with the last few fights. The hydra boss is ludicrously OP in this with 3x turns per round and a bunch of AOE status effects that can be stacked. Stupid, stupid fight. People who took full advantage of Monster Wrangler and did everything / can do 800 damage per round with one character should be able to handle it, but any normal run through the game will hit a wall with that fight.

It'll get nerfed, mark my words. The fight after it isn't much better. Funny thing is that the hydra was a throwaway boss in all the other versions of the game, just something to go through before the final bosses.

Curious to know if other people find the King Hydra to be a ludicrously bad fight in this version of DQ3. I was level 42ish, playing on normal. That usually-throwaway boss was so bad that it warded me off from wanting to do any postgame content, which is normally something I always make sure to do.

95% of DQ3 HD-2D was pretty sick, though. Looking forward to seeing what they make next in this style of visuals. There are things I never wanted to see remade, like Chrono Trigger/Super Metroid/Link to the Past, that I'm now okay with remaking if it's in this style. It's basically what things looked like in the 90's, only enhanced, like games had kept developing along the 2D path instead of switching over to 3D in the late 90's.

Anyone familiar with the Dragon Quest Monsters series? Which ones are worth checking out? Seems like there are a lot of them.

The only ones I'm kinda familiar with are the original DQM on the Game Boy Color, which I tried out back in the day, and DQM: The Dark Prince. I think the latter is the latest DQM since it's on the Switch, and it looks really good. Playing as Saro (the bad guy of DQ4) has a ton of appeal since he's probably the best villain the main series had.

Also kinda interested in Taloon's Mystery Dungeon for the SNES since I love Taloon, but it looks super bland and boring in practice. I think it got a PS1 sequel, maybe that one's better.

If anyone's familiar with DQM or the TMDs, let me know. Since I've beaten the whole series a few times over, I've been waiting a while for DQ12 or a DQ10 localization and it appears at this point that I'm gonna be waiting a lot longer.
