This is the truth. AO was one of the best MMOs ever.
I'm always bummed out i missed that one when you guys talk about it.

I remember being 15yo and only being able to play ever quest because my friend let me use his account. My parents wouldn't let me use a credit card for games, so any other sub game was off-limits. I don't think it was popular anymore by the time I got through boot camp and training

I had a friend like that in HS. He clowned on me and another guy for playing EverQuest like we were a bunch of weirdos. Yet this mf was all about Final Fantasy 10 and Kingdom of Hearts. Like bro.. We're nerds that smoke weed and play football. Yea, all three of us were weird.

Fast forward to a year after graduation, Im done with Boot Camp and MOS training and finally settled in at my first station of duty. Next thing I know, he's messaging me on ICQ? AIM? One of the two, asking what server we were playing on. Turns out the whole time he was clowning on us for playing EQ - it was cause he couldnt play it because his parents wouldnt let him use their credit card.

Its no wonder game time cards took off in popularity. I feel like that trend has dropped off a cliff since basically our generation are the parents now, though.

Never recovered from its bad launch, which is a shame. Was an awesome game. Notum wars was some of the most fun mmo pvp I have had, up there with like peak daoc.

They did so many interesting things before their time. How they did twinking, buffs, mission terminals, flying mounts, housing, world travel etc.

Shadowlands was one of the best MMO expansions for me, I loved the zones, the 2 new classes (keeper and shade), heckler grinding parties, camping and farming dyna bosses, pande and beast raids.

Ah, I played a fixer entire time. Was too much fun so why bother to try other things. I did have a twink low level agent for arena.

As was The Secret World.

Whatever happened to Ragnar Tornequist or however you spell his name? Just remember he was one of those visionary game developers, but I don't know if he's made anything in a long long time.

AO was also probably the first big MMO to fail because of a bad launch and bugs. It kept a loyal population, but its growth was really held back by that.

I dont think AO had proper advertising, tbh. Even if it was buggy, it should have still been more popular than it was. I dont recall when I first heard about AO - but it was a good while after its release. If someone talked about it on the old forums, I assume I just scrolled right over it because I didnt have a fkn clue what they were talking about.

I got some bad news for you man. I had fond memories of his previous work and saw his name pop up in an article, only to find out he was the writer for Dustborn. Appears the woke mind virus ate him alive as far back as 2015 and he has been 'embracing diversity' and embarrassed by his past work and his failure to properly showcase diversity in it.

Sorry to ruin your childhood happy memories ;)

That blows...

Well I think I was in my thirties when I was The Penetrator in The Secret World, so it definitely wasn't my childhood. Had a pretty badass swords and chaos magic build, called it my AIDS build, and you could tank like a boss, but the best was PVP in Fusang Valley.

I don't remember what skills or combinations of stuff did what because it's been so long ago, but anybody that would attack you would end up getting dots or thorn damage if you're just calling out the game mechanic. You could just wade into a group of people, when they would just melt, and the swords was pretty damn great damage.

We just had a little group of friends that have been playing whatever games for years together, and would always go into some sort of practice arena in London to try out different combinations of weapons and skill sets. It was nice though because you could change your skills on the fly and you would have three or four different ones set up, but AIDS what's the best, and I just remember one of my buddies always trying to come up with something that would counter it, and we couldn't figure out anything that would prevent the damage from rolling in.

God damn that game was so much fun.

I'm predicting a similar messy launch that will mirror Conan Exiles woes at launch. Eventually, (year(s)) this may prove to be a decent game. But the current beta consensus is that it's not ready for that release date. /shrug /keepinganeyeonit

I would have preferred Funcom to take the writing team from Secret World and use this engine to create AO2. The Dune link seems weak and pointless other than the name.

Itll still be fun to fuck around in. Funcom generally has a fun noobie experience in their games. BoozeCube BoozeCube - Thoughts?
