DCC Reddit had a beautiful summary of GRRM once DCC #7 hit the NYT Bestseller list:

Binged the series over the last 2 weeks. I was kinda iffy at first, but the way the story opens up is what hooked me. Also there are some pretty great characters throughout the whole series. It's also fucked up in a way that appeals to my type of humor.

I thought about it and ordered the first 4 books in hardcover. I probably won't read them right away, but I liked them enough that the author deserves it.

I don't do audio books. Just not my thing. Paper and imagination. I read a lot faster than anyone could ever speak.
I have tried audiobooks so many times, but unless I am focused on what I am hearing I lose track of it. If I am gonna have to focus on it, I would rather read. I am also a fast reader, so I am the same.

I do both depending on what I’m doing. Audiobooks are great for driving or braindead tasks like mowing. Relaxing after work or before bed, I’d rather read. I’ve been doing both with this series, and the audiobook is so well done I’m preferring consuming it that way. It really makes some of the ridiculous moments more funny. Donut breaking in to a conversation in all caps is pretty funny with the way he reads it.

About to finish the 1st audiobook. It hasn’t really hooked me as much as I’d hoped but by the end I’m willing to give the second a listen. It was a little much at the start with the achievement voice and announcement voices and donut voice, etc. But things have settled in.

Didn’t read any of the thread just to avoid spoilers, only enough to gather the praise for the series from other threads.

The end of book five was hilarious in the audiobook, when she’s singing Wonderwall about Mongo. Wouldn’t have been nearly as funny had I been reading that part.

Can confirm it was sufficiently funny in text as well

I am supremely impressed with his planning, I'm not sure how he managed it.
I remember an interview with Matt Dinniman where he claimed he doesn't plan anything out, just kinda sprinkles in powerful abilities and items and rules and has a list or something that he references when he needs shit to happen. I thought this was pretty insightful since whenever he introduces some new silly ability I assumed he had an idea of how it'd be used.

for example the whatever puppet he used when he went to a temple and fought the bug headed god guy. I can't remember the name but that was a case where he pulled out a clutch move on a silly ability

I'm about 1/3 through book 5, I listen to them on audio because I'm on the go so much with work and kids. It's not only a great book, but also one of the best-narrated audiobooks I've ever listened to, which is quite a bit. I'll buy them in physical copy at some point, just like I did with HWFWM.

Great series for sure, only of my favorites in recent memory.

That’s interesting. It probably explains why I don’t have a problem when he solves some problem in a ridiculous way. Unlike Brandon Sanderson who sets things up from the very beginning and it’s overly obvious that what he’s setting up will specifically solve whatever problem he presents later in the book. Dinniman just throws so much random shit out there and most of it doesn’t even matter or come up again. But he threw enough random shit out there that when he picks one or two things to use to solve a problem it seems more natural than what Sanderson does.

It really feels like he's DM'ing and just improvising to keep up with the players.
