re: online play and messages, I don't know if it's because a week post-release or because I'm in the mid-game, but the signal/noise ratio has gotten a lot better on the messages. They're useful, unique and entertaining enough that I'd rather play with the narrow console pleb screen view and keep them than enable mods and lose them.

Tried firing up the interactive map on my phone since I'm playing on ps5 after I killed Godrick to see what I missed in Limgrave. Lol. Wouldn't recommend trying to use that on a phone

Can't decide what to do next after finishing the whole region around Raya Lucaria. Should I do Ranni's questline leading to lake siofra or up to Altus Plateau/Leyndell like the main story seems to be implying? Still haven't done much in Caelid either and it seems it's boss is recommended before Altus?

Are there a limited number of respec items in the game or can you buy them later? I keep wanting to try out builds like the sword of night and flame but don't want to waste the larvae. I currently use either the gold knight halberd +5 or the bloodhound's fang plus bloody enchanted omen cleaver (also tried magma wyrm sword but afraid to commit more somber stones) powerstanced. I really like both but it would be nice to experiment a bit more.

What is up with me getting 20% or so build up of all status effects when i teleport/respawn? Its not a problem but just annoying. Tried unequipping things but it keeps happening.

This game is unbelievable.

This is likely because you have Godrick's great rune activated. For some reason buffs that affect your resistance stats cause this phenomenon, has happened since Demons/Dark Souls.

Any cool looking light armor? Doesn’t seem to make a difference what the stats are, so might as well find something cool so i don’t look like a retarded hobo nun

I've been trying to find something that looks halfway sexy on a female character. Maybe a ballroom dress or something, at this point. The nicest garb I've found is the crimson hood, and the "sexiest" is probably the Foot Soldier's Tabard IIRC because without pants it's basically a short skirt. So I paired those two up.

Edit: The foot soldier tabard isn't actually sexy, it's just the least decrepit hobo nun thing I have. Instead of going pantless, might try going shirtless with the crimson hood on and shaman leggings or something.

I think Caelid is way tougher than Altus. Probably head to Altus next IIRC. Siofra might be worth a look, but it's pretty rough at low levels.

So far Journey 2 is lame, no pvp anymore, same stuff, some chests are even empty now. Very unsatisfying. Going to have to get to the end again as well to get the bells to be able to buy the mats, this will likely push me so far ahead in levels that no one will be in range to even invade. Up to academy again.

The Raya Lucaria door was sealed, and it didn't look like a key situation, so I figured it'd unseal later after I beat some particular boss, and left. Little did I know, there's a key, and it's like 600 feet away in the swamp somewhere. It was that easy the whole time.
lol same, I ran around exploring, hoping for clues and not discovering it for like 40 levels when I meandered back to the swamp and killed the thing with the key. There is a map with a clue that gets you very close but I completely missed that I ever picked up that clue.

Mine is whenever I see that tombstone icon pop up on the left hand side of my screen......the one that means you can summon your NPC pets. It's always like "uh oh, shit's about the go down"

3: The open world environment is simultaneously the best and worst thing about this game. I love that you can go anywhere, and I'm constantly discovering new places. If I started a new game, knowing what I know now, I could get OP pretty fast by just going to certain places way before I'm supposed to and grabbing certain items. Sorta like you could do with Catacombs in Souls 1, except times 100. However, the bad side of the open world environment is that you often don't know how to progress. I spun my wheels for about 10 hours in the mid-game before I checked a guide to find out where to go next and proceeded to annihilate Raya Lucaria and Volcano Manor since by then I was way overleveled for them. I'd say the best thing to do if this is an issue is to just have a barebones list on hand that tells you where you're supposed to go for the main quest and in what order. So if you ever feel like you aren't progressing, refer to that and get pointed in the right direction.
Very minor quibble on this: Of course knowledge trumps all, that's been true for past souls game where you could beeline for the grass crest shield or drake sword to trivialize the early game. For new players I think it's actually pretty genius how it's implemented for first time players. I've had a Somber stone 8 and 9 now for like 50 levels i can't do anything with. Somber 6 and 7 were the bottle necks for me getting to a S9 level weapon the whole time. Now I just need 7 and once I get one, I'll instantly get a weapon to level 9 so it's a bit of a jump but there are definitely bottlenecks to account for in any build.

Intel is sponsoring a boss rush speed run race right now. Most bosses killed in a set amount of time win. Game has only been out for a week, speed runs are gonna look nuts by the next games done quick.

Death rushing to OP items you looked up in a guide and trivializing the entire early game is a you problem, not an open world problem. Just don't do that lol?

The only real issue I have with the open world is it can be fairly easy to do things in the "wrong" order, in so much that it can be very difficult to tell if an area is just difficult or you are severely under-leveled and should go elsewhere, due largely to the pedigree of Souls games in general where it being hard could easily just be by design.

The real downside to the above though is that if/when you DO do things out of order you severely fuck a lot of the NPC questlines, some of which are extremely large and detailed and provide a huge chunk of the world lore. This has been an issue forever in Souls games where the questlines are so specific and have so many key points of failure that you almost have to look up a walkthrough to do some of the right, but it's just exacerbated bigtime here by the non-linear nature of the game.

Finally killed Melania after about 100 tries.
Died a million times on her phase 1 and when I "killed" her and she went to phase 2 it was such a fucking heartbreak lmao

If you just follow the cliff face north on radhan's beach you'll run into the "War-Dead Catacombs" near the sea. It's not hidden or anything.

Huh yea I just found it, thanks. I thought for sure i had run all the way to the end of the area there but i guess i gave up too early.

Yeah, I avoided all the guides and just roamed the world gathering maps, flask upgrades, and smithing stones... and severely screwed up a main quest because I activated the festival before starting Ranni's quest and doing the stuff with Blaidd. So much so that I had to go back and actually kill Radahn just to get her to spawn the very first time in her tower. The quest skipped over Blaidd completely (no idea where he even is now) and I guess it's back on the path again, but it's annoying that it all happened because I didn't scour the Hold enough to find Rogier hiding out on the balcony after I killed Godrick which in turn forced me to go look up the quest info because I was told to go find her at the tower and she just was never there.

At least someone did post the solution (kill Radahn) but it was very frustrating for a couple hours trying to solve it on my own.
