You can eventually buy up to and including somber stone 9 from turning in bell bearings. You can get up to 8 somber ancient stones per each game clear but like half require completing quests

Easiest Ancient Somber to get is behind the tower right before Mogh elevator. You can suicide run to it to get the drop from the chest, but it may take two runs.

I have no desire to cheat code this game, but given my limited play time and this being my first DS-type experience, I don't mind taking advantage of whatever tools are readily available. It's certainly been better for my controller life.

For example, after a few attempts at those dual gargoyle fucks, I tried cheesing them over to the waterfall, and sure enough, one of them promptly suicided. Even then I still barely managed to survive hacking away at the second one and its horseshit poison spam until it finally died. Did not feel bad.
exploiting boss kills is kind of a soulsbourne classic. If you're youtubing up exploits and exploiting every boss kill your first playthrough it's kinda like, why are you playing, but if you find a way to yeet some dumbass gargoyle off a cliff here and there, that's just part of the experience. Bank error in your favor, brother.

Yeah, Sombers up to +9 are readily available in the endgame via merchants. +10 (Ancient) is the only limited one.

I got 3 Ancients in my game and used them on Malenia, Moonveil, and Carian staff. Two of those were good calls, Moonveil kinda wasn't.

So I’m kind of a completionist. But somehow I’ve hit damn near 40 hours and have just scratched liurnia. I’m still finding shit I missed in the first two zones. My neighbor is playing his 3rd play through, got my best friend to get it, and a work colleague playing. By osmosis I’m learning random shit to do. I still have no idea how the fuck I’d have figured out some of these quests. I’m pretty fucking sure one of the assholes I’m trading knowledge with is googling shit. He’s not that fucking smart.

Anyone know what she's wearing in those videos? The dress and the hat specifically. I'm wondering if she hacked them into the game from elsewhere (Souls 3 maybe) because I haven't seen anything like that anywhere else in any ER content.

Someone he collaborates with is hacking DS and BB armor into the game and specifically asked if he wanted the outfit hacked in for his videos. It’s a set from one of the early DS games, forget which.

I decided to finally toss the twinblade I've been using since like level 12 and go all-in on the Blasphemous blade. I had no idea that some of these legendary weapons follow a different upgrade path / cap. I immediately gathered up a bunch of runes and hit the upgrade smith and was like WTF...I can't even go to +10? What the hell is an ancient somber dragon smithing stone? Nope, no bed time for me until I max out this slow-ass sword. I looked up a questline that awards the stone I needed. I had no idea what Consecrated Snowfield was, but I was dragging my ass over there one way or another, dammit. Of course, I got distracted at multiple points and got demolished by the fucking godskin pricks in a random cave for way too long, shouting out that this fucking game is a waste of life loudly and often, until ultimately working out a win. Made it to Castle Sol, somehow ripped through Commander Niall in two attempts, promptly died to trash as I was leaving (this is the way), horsed my way to the end of the quest, and maxed the sword.

Work is going to be a waste of time today, already need a nap.

Or you could have gotten the ancient somber from Mohg palace that can be gotten within the first hour of the game and without killing a single thing

If you do the Varric quest to access the bird farm, its a couple suicide runs up the palace path. Literally doable as soon as you can complete the Golden Mask quest line.

Edit- I think there might even be a Somber 9 in one of the caves on the way to the Birdfarm camp, too.
