I’ve always hated scaling enemies. I like the world to feel dangerous and it never does when you know everything you encounter is curated to your power level. I’m always chasing that moment when you first open the big doors at the back of Permafrost and discover Ice Giants are in this goblin ruin.

Scaling is horseshit design, but if you're going to use it at least make it bounded scaling. Ex: if you have an enemy that has a typical level equivalent of 10, maybe it scales up to 20 max, and in proportion to player leveling with a ratio below 1:1. Like for every 5 player levels beyond 10 it gains 1 level, up to 20 max.

RPG type games are all about a feeling of power progression. Most scaling systems completely neuter it, if not outright invert it at times. If you can't revisit the goblin town you had trouble with at level 5 when you're level 80 and completely obliterate it within 2.3 seconds, then what the fuck are we even doing?

Because they cannot make anything any good today. They have been re-selling and re-issuing their games for decades.

I don't think I ever touched the difficulty slider back in the day because even then I knew it was just number fudging to pad your time.

To really fix the deep issue with Oblivion, it's probably going to take at least threat level 4 autism just to dig through all of the game's enemy level scaling tables, loot tables, unique items, ect.
Back in the day I used a mod that made the hardest mode basically 10x all damage without increasing mob HP. It made it so enemies could one shot you, and if you tried hard, you could 3ish shot them. It was a lot of fun since damage is largely avoidable if you have a lot of speed.

One of the greatest total conversion mods of any game ever is Nehrim for Oblivion. SureAI.net

There are a couple things it does really well:
1. Show how amazing Oblivion with normal XP leveling and no scaling can be.

2. Show how amazing a no fast travel RPG can be when the quest system is built around it (as in, it doesn't have you flying all over the map for dumb quests).

I wonder how hard it'd be to port it to the remaster.

Edit: restarting PC fixed it.

wtf is this crap? I signed out/in, redownloaded, but I get this error, and something about switching to the account I bought it on. Tried yesterday and today.

I had this issue for a while as well. I thought it was related to getting my new PC set up but I just kept restarting as I installed things and eventually GamePass Ultimate synced up.

That's why they outsourced the remastered. Thank God they did.

From what I've been reading so far, it looks to be extremely moddable and it might be possible to just port old mods in with a few tweaks. Already a nude mod, and people reporting they're able to straight up load oldblivion mods that don't need the script extender.

Game started and played fine for hours . When ever my wife came back to it though it would never load a save, just crash. Reinstalled twice. Same problems both times yesterday. Fresh start today...hope it goes better.

It just works alright.

Do you have a “ or ‘ in your name? It uses your character name in the save file name but Microsoft won’t let you use those characters in a file name so it just says fuck off.

If so, note that quick save does not use your characters name in the save file name.

I didn't have ever playing Oblivion again on my bingo card, but the Elder Scrolls itch hasn't been scratched in many years so I caved. So far I'm really enjoying it. It crashed like a motherfucker early on in the prologue and I was about ready to call it garbage and request a refund, but since being out in the world for several hours, it's been 100% stable. The graphics are impressive and with virtually everything cranked to max it's running very smoothly on a 4090 (80-120FPS @ 4K).

The game's nearly two decades old so certain things are clunky and clearly outdated and I don't know if I'll have the patience / time to roll through dozens of fucking Oblivion gates again, but at the moment I'm not mad at it.

I only played skyrim, on PC, and the atmosphere of the game was awesome, the graphism were ok, the UI was complete ass, and combats were mostly stupid and uninteresting. Fun game, but I would not call it a masterpiece.
