Ability to reconstruct a human face nearly instantly with the wave of a wand? The staggering gap in technology possessed by Elysium and Earth is almost logic breaking when you realize the state Earth is in. Max goes to a hospital and all he is given for a broken arm is a cast. It just makes no sense for such a disparity between the two societies.
It's probably more plausible to someone who grew up in Johannasburg where something like 20% of its residents literally eat garbage and live in tin shacks right next to a big modern city. Elysium is supposed to be South Africa levels of inequality, not the paltry 1% shit we cry about here.

The main problem they were faced with was overcrowding. Giving that kind of medical tech to the masses would make things insanely worse. What are they going to do, cover the earth in giant Mega City 1 style skyscrapers and just let people live in them for free? What's that buzzword - sustainability?

I mean, if this was the Big Evil Commie Propoganda movie people say it is, then they'd have had been stuffing the poor into giant ovens or something.

I think Elysium would have been a better "hold up a mirror" scifi if there was a scene that showed that the miracle medical technologies required living human organic mass to function, and the rulers of Elysium basically kidnap Earth people to keep their own citizens healthy (but only a few know) - could even "allow" immigrant shuttles to come over, and feed those people into the machines. Jodie Foster could have a throwaway line to the girlfriend or Damon about how they kill a million people per year to keep themselves healthy, and billions would have to die to give the same to everyone.

As it stands the movie is really just about a small group of assholes who don't want to share anything, and its especially bizarre given how they dedicated 5 minutes to talking about concerns on profitability. Literally millions of ideas on how to expand their product lines and customer bases (build new orbitals, build arcologies on Earth, etc) but all they wanna do is keep building combat robots on Earth and hang out on Elysium. Thats really the thing that should drive conservatives nuts, these Elysium Republicans are all fucking shitty capitalists.

Umm didnt that pretty much happen?

This movie would of been 10x better if it centered around the interaction between Elysium and whatever political body was governing Earth. At least I assume there was one considering the police presence and the fact that Max was sent to a prison for a few years. Unless that was an Elysium ran prison, then the story really makes no sense.

I'm pretty sure the government we saw on Elysium was THE government, yes. And while they made it clear that they didn't approve of her killing civilians, they were also too cowardly to do anything about it because the want her on that wall, they NEED her on that wall etc. They don't approve but they allow it to happen, but at least some of the elite were shown to have morals.

What I mean about the giant ovens was it wasn't like they were trying to solve overpopulation through mass murder or some kind of evil plot (like the medical machines running on people, PEEEOPLLLEE). They just didn't try to solve it at all, and peaced out into space. That's their big sin and the only real message the movie tries to make - instead of using their resources to try to help the world, they just used them to build a big wall to hide behind. And history shows that no wall is high enough - eventually the barbarian hordes are going to knock down the wall, kill all the haves, a new elite will rise and maybe things will be better and maybe they will be worse.

I don't think the movie at all tries to say that wealth inequality is "wrong". It simply exists, and it has consequences. Eventually, the scales will tip so badly that people break out the guillotines and start all over. That happens. (Rome, France, Russia, Cuba, on and on and on) So the propagandizing is simply, "it's in your own best interest to make sure the world doesn't go completely to shit because if it does the poor people are going to break in, murder you, and take your shit."

The most important scene I think is the bit where the idealistic revolutionary guy that actually seems to be trying to help people tries to get Max on his side with his save the world bit, and Max says "uh, fuck off, I'm saving myself." Right there, the director holds up a giant sign that says LIBERAL IDEALISM DOES NOT WORK BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE SELFISH. LIBERAL IDEALS ARE FLAWED TOO, YOU FUCKING MORONS. But all of these conservitard idiots who think the movie is about america and mexico (South. African. Writer.) are missing that point somehow. Probably because most of the people ranting on message boards start their rant with "I haven't seen this socialist propoganda..." well DUH. This shit is being spread by people who didn't even see the movie.

Do idiots rant like this every time a new Robin Hood movie comes out? THAT is liberal propoganda, ffs.

Spronk - the movie website shows that more Elysiums are being built. But the only products being made are for the top .01%, because they are only people with any money to buy anything.

Pretty much all ecologists believe that even more urbanization will be required to support our growing population. 40 years ago the thought was that cities were polluted wastes, nowadays they recognize that packing people as close together as possible is actually the most sustainable and most environmentally friendly.

Kreugen:

I don't doubt that what you say is true, and the majority of the allegorical content in the movie is based on South African issues when it was written. It's also not much of a stretch for me to believe that some hollywood studio types came in and made some rewrites to add terms like "illegals" and "homeland security" to beat us asshole americans over the head with.

So I did some more reading and apparently there is a huge conservitard bitchfest over the supposed liberal message of the film when there is no clear message either way. The rich vs poor stuff is just the setting for a sci-fi action film. There's no proselytizing whatsoever. Everything is left for you to judge for yourself. The characters nearly all act out of selfish self-interest, rich or poor. Not one person lifts a finger to help a stranger. The protagonist was so fucking far from being portrayed as a saint that people calling this propaganda are absolute retards.
^ This. Too many sandy vaginas with their sensibilities offended by a movie sci-fi plot. The antagonist has to be wealthy for the story to work because how many poor guys build their own space station? What do we need next - Affirmative Action for movie villain socioeconomic level?

Less "offended" and more like causes some eye rolling and realizing this movie would of been a lot better if it didnt have any political stupidity in it.

I hot no immigration vibe from this movie at all. I mostly agree with Krueger. I would also say the movie highlights how callous we can be.

I'm trying to recall any time ever that a psycho-killer, gangster, or drug dealer character in a movie lived in some shithole apartment and anyone called that "demonization of poor people".

Here's an exercise in creative writing, get rid of the 'liberal propaganda' in the script by having some dude use his welfare money and food stamps to build a space station and army of robots to oppress people.

I like that any sort of movie that has any sort of message about people working together to maintain a stable healthy civilization is immediately 'liberal socialist propaganda'.

I can't wait to see some 'conservative propaganda' which I'm pretty sure would just be The Blind Side. Except the kid was robbing that nice rich white family rather than joining them.
