I don't have any decent pics of the actual ring, but here's the image my wife photoshopped together that we sent the jewelsmith to cast. Paying a professional to build a model of it, then cast the gold into a unique ring was the most expensive part, but I don't mind paying for unique stuff and my wife really liked that she got to design it rather than just getting whatever, or even getting the illusion of choice by picking shit out from a catalog.

The actual ring looks pretty much identical to it, though the garnets on the side are brighter.

That is a beautiful ring - and you argue well for it. I have what I need and will bring your arguments to the boss. Thank you so much, Tubro. I shall think of you when I reap the benefits. No homo.

I understand the nature of this prostitution system. What I'm asking is why is it relevant today? Dowry is not relevant in a modern society. Women have equal rights and access to all society has to offer. Why must we bribe them, and dazzle their friends and family, with metal and rocks still? Where is romance and love in all of this?
Romance and Love has nothing to do with an engagement ring. Dowry is not relevant in modern society because women are currently acting as the gatekeepers in control of sex and relationships. Women have access to men whenever, wherever, and however many they want. Because of that, they essentially have a "negative dowry" aka "bride price" aka you will buy her shit that she can show off to her friends so that she can brag about how great of a provider you are.Unless you in an elite top-tier of successful men, and I'll leave you to define successful however you want, but it's Greater than 150k a year salary, fame, good looks or preferably a combination of multiple factors, men are caught up trying to "pursue" women.

I'm not exactly an expert on anthropology, but I am merely suggesting this is the biggest cause for the shift in attitudes in the last 100 years. Beyond a diamond cartel marketing department.

The way I got my wife on board with moissanite vs diamond is I told her, "Let's go to a dept store and compare moissanite vs diamond. ... I'm only spending 2k USD on a ring. Here's a 2k USD diamond ring that's smaller than you want. Here's a 200USD moissanite ring that's of the same size. You actually like the moissanite more than the diamond. If you want a diamond you can get this ring. If you want moissanite you can have virtually whatever ring you want, including paying a professional to make a completely unique ring with whatever gems you want."

Dowry isn't relevant in modern society but there are plenty of Fathers of the Bride still paying for the wedding.
That's possibly the only thing dumber than engagement rings. Maybe if its her first wedding and she's really truly a good marriage-worthy girl and you truly believe in the union with the guy she's marrying....I guess. If any of those things remotely don't apply I'd feel like the biggest chump on earth dropping big five figure sums on some overpriced party for little princess who spent half her college years taking cocks willy-nilly and will probably be cheating on the dude in five years tops then divorced well before tenth.

Here is the problem I have with that, no way in hell am I going shopping for an engagement ring with my girlfriend. If/when I ever propose, it still needs to have some element of surprise... why? I don't know, romcoms I guess?

People who blow 50-100k on a wedding are fucking morons, bigger morons than people who spent 5k on engagement rings.
Except that "bride price" has been around since prehistoric times. I mean, people have heard of dowry and don't seem to have a problem with it, why do such people tend to recoil from the reverse situation.
Thats like saying the mafia is legit because its been around for a long time. hey people used to practice blood letting 500 years ago so it must be a legit and useful practice, right?

I tend to agree with that. It seems so odd to me to basically agree as a couple that you're going to get married, go shopping for an engagement ring, and then at some point after do the proposal. The couple that I was talking about that kicked off this latest discussion did that, and I just found it so weird.

Early on while shopping for an engagement ring I was researching simulated diamonds. There are a ton of 'testimonials' out there saying 'you can't tell the difference and I paid $100/carat!'. Well, these guys had a 60 day unconditional return policy, so I was like... Why not.Asha Diamonds, Simulated Man Made Diamonds With A True Lab Created Diamonds Surface

Long story short, they aren't even close to a diamond. They look like...well... Diamond shaped pieces of glass. They have no 'depth', and anyone who has seen an actual high-end diamond would spot it being a fake with just a glance. Maybe I could see using a simulated stone for small accents on jewellery, but if you were to get a .50c or bigger as a solitaire it would look ridiculous, and wouldn't fool anyone who had a clue.

This is the price of being a heterosexual man. It's not so bad considering the alternative.

Every person and couple is different. I'm sure my wife would've been happy if I went out and bought her a ring and then totally surprised her with it. But if I did that I would get a fairly neutral/boring ring and I knew my wife wanted something different, unique and specific. So I had her design a ring from the ground up. She more proud of the design of the metal than the gems in it.

Yup. I looked into the same stuff. There's a huge difference between simulated diamonds, glass, CZ etc and real diamonds.
