Yea, it is actually a decent little quest series and takes you all throughout TSS as you level. The rewards are basically defiant gear, I'd have to check timelines but I think that expansion and those quests came out before defiant. They then added defiant gear as random anywhere drops to help people gear up without following those quest chains.

I've been doing those as well, I came back but I'm not pretending that I will grind to max level/aa and raid again. I know it's just a stint during down-time in my life so I've been trying to do alot of the quests, tasks, and all the other crap I missed in the last 7 expansions or whatever it is. Some of it is quite fun and fairly challenging as well when you do it level appropriate.

I will say though that if you do want to come back and just blast to the top there are tons of people power-leveling, or offering free taskadds(TAs), which basically is like joining a LDoN right before it's about to finish. You join someone in a mission/task/quest and you get the reward but don't do shit to help. Reward can be massive xp or loot or whatever. In general the community is fairly nice to new/returning people.

It's old news too but I am still trying to find a group of people willing to do the old monster missions. No idea what they are like but I really wanna be naggy and slay a raid.

I'm pretty sure the quests were there previously as well, except now if you complete a series of them, like for instance doing all the quests for the Botanist that has you going into Stone Hive, you get defiant level gear (both ear pieces I think) for what amounts to about twenty minutes of work. They essentially make the actual quest rewards useless if they're armor or weapons. Some of the potions are good. Hell, I'm doing GM at the moment and the class specific gear I'm getting there from the one guy who has you collecting Bear asses (and wolf asses, and spider asses, and snake asses) isn't even as good as the stuff I got for doing all the quests in the Moors which are mid-30s at best. It's kind of funny but it does highlight how much further they've pushed the game from then (though that is 7 years ago at this point).

Oh well, I'm actually enjoying myself. Playing on test I outleveled everything fairly quickly but I figure I'll get around to evening things out again once I get the chance to put exp into AAs. BTW, what's the consensus on how far you can go with a Tank Merc and what I should move to after he's outlived his usefulness?

Yep, tank mercs aren't very good after 60 but 90+ if you have done the j5 quest they become useful again.

I haven't played EQ1 in many, many years for more than a few minutes. Thinking of giving it a go. I don't have my old account so starting back over at level 1.

Any suggestions?

If you are starting completely fresh after a long break, I'd suggest the test server. You can /testbuff to level 25, experience gain is permanently increased, and you don't have to worry about starting from 0 in a 15 year old economy (just ask in general for some plat). Best of all it's free, so there's no risk in case you decide it hasn't aged well enough for your taste.

Nahh, they are fine until like 75-80. Thats where they really start to fall off. Also the healer mercs really start to suck, or used to. I dont know if they fixed them.

Up to the point I played back in March or so at level 100 the tank merc was fucking worthless and got trucked by anything in the last like 3 - 4 expansions. Ruins the game when combined with no one PUGing at all.

there aren't shit for groups on test, that much is true. you literally may get 1 random hot cy group during the mid 80s once a week. before then there's jack shit, after that there's jack shit. it stagnates so much, thats when everyone 85+ makes 2 boxes and forms their own group.

however, if youre on test, i always drop a char and a merc to let 1-2 people in if theyre lfg. so, if you come back to test and want something to do. hit me up. im quite positive there are groups galore on live, but you have to suffer through slower exp

I played on FV with a 5k aa druid and the game just isn't enjoyable at cap. I sure as fuck wasn't going to pay for 2 or 3 accounts either, because that is the opposite of a good time.

We should get some t4 class weapons tonight or tomorrow, ort. Be easy as hell with our group. Pointless for the necros but the ranger/zerk/bard are pretty decent

Playing on Test you occasionally have to deal with a bug or two. The current ROFL one is that if you have 5 or more saved AA points, when you zone or log in it immediately gets spent in Eyes Wide Open (which takes 5 points), which expands your advanced targeting window. Heh.

Yeah thats goofy but the devs are saying its an auto updating aa. It shouldnt have been locked behind levels or whatevef and no one will get the aas back. Not really a bug but retarded. Plenty of goofy things happen on test though

It's not like getting AAs on Test is a chore either. Unless you're up to the lower percentage increase levels in which case it might be a pain but 2x exp is a nice salve.

Not even hard at 100 with 8k aa takes two kills in a hot zone with no pot or lod

Well, I quite appreciated the feedback and boy, did I love me some EQ way back in the day and have some great memories of it. I just can't do it anymore though.

The Luclin models just so bother me and I feel like its a fight just to do anything with the way the old girl runs as far as the UI and such is concerned. Which, while I realize is better than it was all those years ago, it just feels dreadfully uncomfortable and unenjoyable compared to other games of today.

I suppose I could get back into it over time and with some work, but I just don't feel like putting in that time and work for a game I feel I'll probably never really catch up to even if I did really enjoy it.

Mithaniel bless you happy few you keep on trucking though!

It took me a bit to get back into it. It's definitely from a bygone era of MMOs, I think even DAoC had some major quality of life improvements at the outset and it's only a couple of years younger. I think, however, compared to the current batch of frenetically paced MMOs there's a slower pace to it that appeals to me at times.
