So is anyone else bothering to read the lore ebooks? The writing is a bit mediocre, but they are getting pretty graphic with the violence... Decapitations, disembowelments etc. Not that I have a hard-on for that stuff, but I find the more 'adult' themes encouraging if they plan to mirror at least some of it in game. They may have gotten rid of Innorruuk and Cazic Thule, but the world they are creating certainly has its share of darkness and evil. From what I've read so far, the lore is far darker than original EQ.

All modern fantasy books are about gruesome deaths with all the blood and gore and incest and anal sex, willing and unwilling, they can fill in. In all honesty they are becoming annoying and boring shit that just wants to be "realistic" at all costs. I'm fucking sick of reading books that can't stay far from the brutal violence narrated with a grand amount of details. Give me back some old authors once a day and twice on Sunday, Martin and friends can go suck a bag of cocks, since they like so much writing about it.
You don't need to be violent to be "mature", you know?

Ya and I agree with you... Just happy to see some 'edge', no matter how typical it is, in the game at all.

Miele,

I always enjoy your perspective and I agree that Fantasy/SF could use more variety. I am a voracious reader so that could be a major factor. I really enjoy the new violent authors though. It is beginning to inundate the field but not as widely as the Harlequin modern fantasy varieties or the Dresden knockoffs. I sometimes go back to read Jack Vance, Hubbard, Burroughs, Howard and others just to feel that old magic once again. Every age has it's style and this one's is of a much more violent nature. Some of these writers are superb though.

At least these novellas are better written than a lot of TSR junk. Not much better but better.

It's like the WoW-model for books: I read Martin or Erikson, just to name two and there is an abundant number of deaths described down to the last detail. On the other hand, thankfully if I may say so, I can read a genius like Rothfuss or another very good writer such as Scott Lynch and lo and behold! they manage to write down compelling non-standard fantastic stories without exaggerations towards that style of writing (some deaths, bit of blood, okay, not GoT/Malazan level of carnage).
If you add that media nowadays have nothing better to do than write/show all the wrong things in the human mind (again: violence) it irks me a bit when to "escape reality" I want to go in a fantasy world and find the same stuff everywhere. Damn me wishing about the good old D&D style narrative with Weiss & Hickman or even early Salvatore, hell even Terry Brooks gets a pass (never been a great fan of Shannara).

I can understand and even support a bit of realism, but sometimes all I can say is "enough".

Forgive me for an offtopic rant. After all EQN will be Pixar style, so it's all good in heaven and earth

I just finished The Mage of the Tier'Dal. I had totally forgotten to check their website for new stories the past couple months. Not that they're awesome, but they're not too bad. I just wish they'd release them in chronological order. Seems stupid to just release shit all willy-nilly and then expect their readers to piece it all together.

The mage of the Teir'Dal and Fall of Bastion are part of a 3 part story involving Coralen Larkos. Mage is part 1 and Fall is Part 3. Yes, they released them out of order. lol

Also, some new bits about 4 classes

Hey, what do ya know, something useful onreddit

Largely another article on Landmark, with some basic EQN info tossed in, but there's a few new tidbits. Sounds like, at least for EQNL, the bulk of the monetization will come from skimming off of the Player Studio stuff; hopefully that carries over to EQN proper, and thus keep the bullshit that can often spring up in f2p to a minimum.

The article also unveils a few new classes: the Tempest (which we already knew about), the Cleric, Necro, and Beastlord (who lost the claw weapons, but, eh, what are ya gonna do?)

EDIT: bah, ninja'd.

A spear makes more sense for a pet user anyway. Pet tackles opponent, you stab it from a distance. Competing with your pet for contact space is impractical.

Oh yeah, I like the spear for them; it fits well with the whole primitive hunter vibe that BLs give off.

The flail/shield, on the other hand, has me scratching my head a bit. But, we'll see how it works out, I guess.

Someone make a joke about taking an arrow to the knee.

And screw you guys. Beastlord with claws was one of my favorite classes. Competing for contact space? If we're gonna go all 'making sense' and shit, how hard is it to fathom getting attacked by a bear and then suddenly there's some crazy, unshowered, ogre clawing up your ass because apparently he's put his own hands into some bear paws and is using them as a weapon like a fucking maniac.

Maybe your pansy ass BL would have learned to use a civilized weapon like a spear, but fuck you, I want claws and fists to barsh stuff!

Flail and shield!?! Fuckgetaboutit
