SolB -> Lavastorm -> Nektulos -> Ecommons -> Nro -> Oasis -> Sro -> Innothule Swamp -> Guk wasnt tedious and would be a 20min run.
From the various P99 play sessions, I still found it faster to just man up and make the run to wherever (Guk, Seb, etc) than begging for ports. Shit sucked.

The only time it was really slow was when you had to use the boats. That shot took hours.
That's nice about P99 at least. Very easy to get a WC cap and keep it charged (if you're in a guild), get swamp/everfrost potions, and your OT hammer.

probably more like 12 minutes if you're SOW'd and strafe the whole way

you can do the EC -> Qeynos run in the length of a single SOW if you strafe the whole way.

OH GOD. I remember back in the day I took my erudin on and epic adventure at level 10 to hook up with my buddy who made an wood elf ranger in kelethin. That trip with all the deaths in the gorge of king xorbb and a few other areas probably took a good 3 hours. This was pretty soon after the game came out so there were not a whole heck of a lot of people who could do the ports at that time and those who could were charging more than I could afford.

Especially if you missed the boat due to poorly designed zone geography. At the Freeport dock the boat would sit weirdly high in the water-too high for, say, a dwarf to actually jump on to the boat without first jumping on to one of the dock's support beams. The first time I tried to make the return trip to Faydwer, I had people on the boat loling at me while I kept jumping into the side of it trying to get on. Then had to wait for the ship to make a round trip to try again.

Dial Up modem loading you into the ocean zone so slowly that the boat was already sailing away when you finally loaded in so you fell into the sea was pretty sweet too.

I like these debates, because they are fresh and new and we never spoke about these issues here. One moment, I'll go look for my sarcasm sign.

I play the game for what it is, if it has fast travel, I'll use it, if it doesn't I'll leg it as fast as I can. Aside from day #1 and day #23498348 where someone is bored out of their mind and are looking for something to do, going around to explore is an activity that not many do. I like the griphon system of WoW, even with those few ports around, having a mage in group is still a very nice and convenient thing, but if I happen to play without one, I won't have to go all Bang-cock with a hammer screaming "why hast thou forsaken me?".

I played Skyrim with a melee character without teleporting once (self-inflicted roleplaying I guess, I must be crazy, but I'm not truly aknowledging it) , it was an amazing experience, but I wouldn't do it a second time.
As a matter of fact Skyrim is also small-ish compared to an MMO world, it's hand crafted and a solo experience, hardly portable (pun intended) in an MMO setting.

It's like having friends in WoW that complain about 5-men not being challenging since the old baron runs. Blizzard puts in Challenge Modes and they don't want to run them, because we wiped on our first attempt (hint: that's why they are called challenge modes, you can fail, you are expected to fail until you learn, but I disgress), then wonder why I said "fuck off" and quitted for a couple months.
I don't like that behaviour, so I won't complain because of instant travel or comfortable ways of traveling being available to everybody, because if they are in game, I'll use them, so I'd rather not be a hypocrite. If that's the same for you.

EQ Next for me is a subject where I'm a bit torn about:am I hyped or am I not? I probably am, because even if I love WoW, a 10 years old game remains a 10 years old game and despite changes, the basic stuff at the bottom is always following a specific paradigm. Would I like the idea of a completely different MMO? In theory yes, but what if it sucks? Another waste of potential? Will my old ass be able to accept that some old shit doesn't sell anymore?

I think their character models, their art style and the tidbits I saw from the world are nothing short of amazing, but I love cartoons too, so I'm biased. Playing (not much to be honest) some Landmark beta, makes me want to play EQ:N more (but Landmark less, I don't really enjoy building stuff if I know it will be wiped for release). That emote video from Landmark was... how to say? Fucking beautiful? Yeah, it works, fucking beautiful it is.

I so want to play my range-rogue-wizard-monk-warrior-bastard.

I think the biggest problem is that when you reach the point where it's routine, it becomes a chore. Everyone remembers their first Freeport-Qeynos run, but 3 years later you just groan at the thought. At some point you hit cap and the adventure is gone, and you just want to get from doing your casual activity on the west-side of the world to your friends group on the east-side without wasting 45 minutes because you just got home from work or whatever. Giving druids and wizards ports was an ok solution, but I'm sure we all remembered times when hunting one down felt like more work than just running.
I like the unlock solution mostly. It should be more than just arrive a place and unlock it, some sort of attunement that comes with being in the place doing shit for some time? Who knows.

I do log into EQ every now and again and hoof it across the continents just to see the sites. Bards /represent

Used to do it daily anyway on target scouting missions, was less dull when you ran at 500 mph.

With the added fun of "accidentally" towing hill giants/undead/sand giants over unsuspecting people meditating by the sea shore.

To this day I will pull up the Fancy the Bard Site and have a good laugh reading it. What is it that makes trolling/griefing/training so god damn fun? lol

Hear, hear.

I would love a game that had the original EQ run from Qeynos to Freeport experience and all the other stuff that EQ had that mmo's don't have anymore. At level 15 as a SK that was a lot of fun. Did it with a friend and we had a scary, hand wringing, blast. But it worked because EQ had a strange sort of somewhat unintended design balance that made it work. Just putting excruciating long travel times into a game isn't enough (Vanguard tried and it didn't work). The whole game has to work around the experience and that isn't easy to do. EQ was frankly lucky that it did back then.

And I don't want all games to be like EQ, far from it. Variety is the spice of life and all that. A game can have fast travel, instant level to level 1,000,000, etc etc. and I don't care, as long as it's fun, engaging and makes me forget what all these debates are about.

The classic solution about having both TP, and meaningful travel is limited resource.

A Tale in the Desert in its early versions had "offline running". When you disconnected, you could set activities to be "performed" while offline. You could harvest a few things... or run somewhere. You actually did not run there, you just accumulated travel time. If you wanted to go somewhere, you could instantly go there if you had enough travel time to spend.

An alternative system is a variant on runes. You have TP spots in everyzone. Even half a dozen possible TP spot per zone. The problem is that you can only "memorize" a limited number of those runic arcane names. If you want a new spot, you need to forget an old spot. TP spots are limited by level (or AA, or achievements, or all of those). The limited resource is number of spots there.

Final solution is summoning stones. There is no TP to somewhere, only summons. You can cross the continent in the blink of an eye... if you have a friend on the other side that goes to the TP spot and summon you. The limitation becomes your social network.

I always enjoyed the run and become so frustrated when people want to take this part out of the game. I really thought EQ had it right. Early on, you just had to deal, and eventually it became a profession or means of community to offer travel. I know it isn't going to happen but I hope there is no queuing at all. I hope that there is no summoning players clear across the world unless it is something of a spell with a huge cost. I know people disagree but to me, travel is as much part of the game as leveling in a dungeon in terms of the game "experience". You should see the world and the people within it. You should cross paths, band together, fight, and/or run for your life. Maybe Frodo/Sam should have just asked Gandalf for a port or found a book to PoK and took the Mordor stone.

If i'm not careful i'll get on my soapbox and provoke mobs carrying torches and pitchforks lol.... This is just really something that impacts my gaming experience and was a big part of my early memories and developing our community on EQ.

I loved the fact that you had regular porters that would make money porting groups. It made the community interact and produced friendship.

Instant travel KILLS this.
