Well if you think about it, the company went bankrupt. So the lifeblood isn't oxygenated. So tossing it into the biowaste canister is exactly the respect that it deserves.

Soe wasn't bankrupt was it? Sony is fucked up but for reasons unrelated to soe.
They were reporting tens of millions in losses from SoE alone.

A big part of that was due to developing multiple games (EQ3, EQNext, H1Z1). But yeah.

I was hoping Landmark was going to be their design tool and that's why it wasn't bound to fantasy, modern, or future elements but had all.
I was hoping that engine would create a living world that could be cultivated, grown, developed, built, or destroyed.
I was hoping for randomly generated biomes and naturally occurring drama between NPCs based on their keyworded personalities.
I liked their idea of randomly generated filler quests and I hoped for NPCs creating quests that matched their keyworded personalities.
I kind of hoped for being able to drive creatures and resources to the brink of extinction.

It seemed like all was going well...

In Minecraft, I love being able to use all my things unlike in EverQuest where the random pouch of skin I found was used for one specific thing.
In Minecraft, I loved being able to dig and explore and climb and place blocks - But I don't need to do that all the time. If EQN was only partially diggable, that could have been fine. All buildings and placables should be destroyable probably though.

I don't have a doubt in my mind the true "vision" of EQN and Landmark was all of the above- but it would not be released for another 5-7 years. Sony as a company, and SOE as its branch is not meant to run as a full R&D organization, nor where its leaders the proper leaders for such. An investment firm is actually a good place for all of this technology to simmer and cultivate to a form of maturity. Lets just hope this investment firm is planning the 10-20 game not looking for a quick turn around, although that's doubtful. They will put resources into their investment in order to mature it so it can then later be sold for staggering profits... at least that is the idea.

What made you think things seemed to be going well?
He might be like me, I thought everything was okay-ish the last time I seriously bothered to check up on it - which was around the Landmark alpha time a year ago. I mean, even IF everything was fine it was a "2+ years away" deal. No need to keep close tabs on a game that is over 2 years away and might never come to fruition. Apparently, that's not the worst stance to take, since I'm fairly indifferent about the sale and likely death of SOE. The only downside is that the storybricks/dynamic world MMO I'd want to play is probably delayed for another 5-10 years.

Little more than 2 years away. Even now.

Literally the director of development at the time went on twitch just last week and said they'll be "Starting" development on Everquest Next right after landmark goes open beta.

They haven't even started on the actual game yet. Six years on the table.

I think Storybricks being quite underwhelming may be the issue here.
I'm under the impression storybricks is the least of their problems.

Writing an action combat system from scratch in forgelight with voxel interactivity and heroic movement factors is definitely more of an issue than setting up triggers and filters in storybricks.

Might as well call this Everquest Ice Skating.

Storybricks was literally the only appealing thing about EQN, and we had seen nothing really to substantiate the claims of how "awesome" it would be. With that potentially proving to be lackluster, or at the very least it losing its "exclusive" status via its implementation in GW2, EQN is looking worse every day now lol.

Agreed, all of the early combat I've seen via Landmark is garbage. A spammy mess lacking weight, sliding around at free fall speed in a scrambled mess of so-called heroic animations and particle effects. Again, this is just my personal opinion, and I'm willing to put up with a lot in a game if the combat is good, but from my perspective I've yet to hear one thing (especially given how little we know, and whether those claims are even true) about EQN that struck me as something appealing or them doing something right, other than the fact that its set loosely in Norrath.
