After having about 24 hrs to reflect on what I saw yesterday, I have to say that I'm not impressed.

Visually, it looks great with cool animations and interesting environments. The engine seems sound and looks like it encapsulates a lot of really innovative tech. I just have a real problem with the lack of eveything else. I thought, after the reveal, that there would be more shown. You know, like an actual game... a starting area... a dungeon... something. Rather we were treated to a lot of armchair development interviews, with developers saying really curious things like "that would be neat" or "we're not going to talk about that yet". Call me cynical, but I got a real Vanguard-vibe about it.

This "game" sounds great on paper, but we've seen jack shit so far. In 4 years, SoE has managed to put together a great looking tech demo. Whoop-dee-fuck. I'm very skeptical if even half of what I'm hearing from these guys is even remotely true and, even if it is, I'm even more skeptical that SoE can pull it together without stepping on their dick. Remember, these are the clowns that tout one of the key EQ2 expansion features as being a fix to an existing feature that has been in the game for years and has never been fixed. Have we completely forgot who we're talking about around here?

I really didn't like the Kerran in screenshots, but once I watched the video of him moving around it looked a ton better.
Because it is in third person mode and you did not have to see his face which brought down the 4th wall pulling you from EQ into Disney with a derp look.

Art style is for sure designed to pull from a different audience than the original EQ players. However, I am bitching about one tiny view of one look of one race. I did not mind the human that much at all, as she (as others have pointed out as well) looked like she belonged in Bioshock Infinite. It might end up being good as a whole.

As to the comments of people bitching that it is "too dark". I just... why? Are they 12? I have not seen anyone here, but I would really like to see someone who said that explain as to exactly why they think so. Ask them if they do not think that a natural dark night, with the ability to counter it with light sources/spells, is preferable to a day/night cycle which is hardly noticable (like WoW)? To me it is just mind boggling, considering that darkness is the easiest way to implement a visual sense of danger in the world. No darkness to me represents a design desicion to make the game easier. "you will not encounter any hassles in our mmo. No darkness. No death penalty. Power heavily shifted in favor of players against mobs. Easy solo. No downsides, all fun!!"

Problem with games like that is that the fun part quickly deminishes. So they counter it with loot abundance and constant gear upgrades with ever so slightly increasing stats to make progress rewarding because progress will come nearly automatically in a game like that. Exploration given small exp boots as you open up a bit of the map as the only real reward, because actually exploring it takes as much effort as turing in the direction you want to go and pressing forward/autorun. Mobs encountered along the way will never be a problem as you are moving forwards at a greater speed than them, and their individual power levels will nearly always be lower than yours, so you will not be in danger of being unable to reach your desired destination.

Meh to that design philosophy. Meh I say.

Yeah. It's like having a sandbox as a kid and your parents telling you that you cannot play with the dumpster and the crane and can only use the plastic shovel.

If SOE had any sense at this moment, they would be ignoring a lot of the negatives and create the sandbox and really give * complete * control to players.
Chances they at least will toss out one , "fine do whatever you want and blow each other's shit up even though we don't like the idea" server ?

Or would the fear of it being packed too much for for their ego ?

I'm not really sure how much player building is going to happen in EverQuest Next. I think people are confusing Next and Landmark

There is player building in EQN.

Landmark templates can be imported in to EQN by players once they have an "area in EQN" whatever that Georgeson comment meant.

Is it my ideal style for an animalistic character model? No. Do I understand it had to be that way for the range of expressiveness they need in facial/body movement? Yup.

When i first saw the model i kinda sighed. However, that jump + sprint + roar sequence really excited my inner teenager, and in that, I think they succeeded.

What about Day 1 in EQN? EQN will have different bulding mechanisms. You will have to earn the right to build. No claim flags.

Honestly, if they kept it tiger-like, I don't think we'd see as many complaints. Tigers have flatter faces in comparison. I think it's the elongated muzzle that's really throwing people off.

Also, they could have given him a bit more of a gritty look. He just looks too 'pure'.

I'm with you. It's not amazing, but I don't think it's as bad as people are claiming.

My feeling is that they wanted to make a minecraft voxel based type game. Then when they had that working they decided to make an EQish mmorpg out of it.
