I think we all understand what we saw so far is not what its really like but there are problems here. They are going for an open system where a reliance on any 1 class is gone. They can do all the internal testing they want but they can't test how it would be like in a large environment. Sure they can play with each person having a role in the battles etc but how can they guarantee the game wont devolve in to a DPS fest where you worry about yourself only?
I think they call it a beta or something like that?

I was excited about this because I hoped it would be Vanguard done right. Maybe DOTA the MMO will turn out ok, but I'm no longer excited.

Pickling a hero at start screen is gonna be interesting. Picking a hero based on its 'class' abilities would be a very bad call IMO, and here is why:

1. Of primary importance will be hero selection based on DMG type (ranged vs melee). Since every hero can only have 2 weapon loadouts, this is probably the single most limiting factor when it comes to character creation.

2. The thing of secondary importance will be the mix of character skill 'types' available to each hero. For example, a cleric having 2 defensive skill slots, 1 movement, and 1 utility.

3. Armour type, and the ability mods associated with that type come next, as this is also static for the hero you have chosen.

So, the only REAL customization comes from hero (character) abilities. But you have to ask yourself, why do they seem so chill and laissez faire about balance issues? Ill tell you why - because the character skills, within their various types, are going to be almost totally homogeneous. Sure, a wizard will have a blink ability to keep it mobile, but it will be almost identical to the warrior's leap, and the ranger's ground slide or whatever. Who cares which one you pick? They are basically the same skill with different animations...

Prove me wrong Sony.
They said just because you are picking from one of 8, or however many starting classes, your character is not that class forever. That is not a permanent choice in any way, according to the panel. Those are just the ones you start with, but they are not inherently better or worse than the other 30ish that you find later on (enter balance). In other words, if you pick a warrior to start out, you could ditch that for the first class you find out in the world and your character will not maintain any semblance of being a warrior, other than the fact that the warrior "class skills" are available for the 4 class slots. Basically the first class you pick is a freebie, every other class has to be found to be available, including the other 7 starting classes that you did not pick.

Wondering if it's going to have a "free form" targeting like Wildstar after watching the combat video a couple more times.

It's sad that I recognize it as completely absurd, but still hope there's some chance for the ghost of Brad McQuaid to rise from the ashes, use those pushed to the side assets, and create a proper EQ3. Despite everything that happened during the development of Vanguard, I still want McQuaid to have another go once he gets out of the development stomping grounds at SOE.

But yeah, for all my negativity I'm still going to play the shit out of this game because there seems to be a lot of good coming with what I perceive to be bad.
Brad as Lead Designer. Someone else needs to be running the show as Creative Director. But otherwise pretty much this.

The thing is, while the rerolled community tends to be the hardest of the hardcore, we're not alone in our sentiment toward the reveal. Lets look at fuckass MMORPG.Com, EQNext subforum..

Thats alot of "WTF". If their trendy stance on open development, player-dev communication, etc is anything remotely more than buzzwords, I think we might, mightsee positive development direction in this very, very early title.

Didn't they already say it did? The "no targets, swing your sword and hit any mobs in the way" pretty much stated as such.

If it follows most action style games, 95% of the moves are AE with the rest being a "lock on style" but can still hit multiple mobs.

I feel like that's their plan, which I don't mind so much. I think they said something long the lines of "not every ability you need a target for" so

Yeah but that just determines that there's physics involved. Not exactly the same as Wildstar's system, where you see an outline of your attack before you do it, so you can aim properly. Looks very similar to the way the void knight's attacks looked.

EQN is not going to change drastically. The only hope is that SOE decides to make EQ3 in addition to EQN and EQN/L

As much as I would love to see EQ3 happen, you know they will not do it. They do not have Blizzard's revenue and have a fraction of devs. They have already pulled dev manpower from their other titles to work on EQN. There's just no way they would split that up even further. They are going to focus every last creative talent and nickel they have into EQN to ensure its success (they hope). Dilluting that into two mainstream titles simply wont happen. Quote me on that.

I didn't see outlines on the player attacks, just enemies. Wildstar is the first to do it for the players, other games like Tera, vindictus etc the moves are the same(all AE type either cone, around etc based on the ability) but no "outline" to guide you. Like that wizards energy ball or w/e, it wont just hit one target, it follows a line and anything in the path gets hit, with a per-determined range where it just poofs.

I agree. Maybe in 2016 ;-)

Well, in all fairness that npc was being controlled by a person (confirmed during an interview or panel). I'm just saying, don't be surprised if they show something like that later on. They didn't show an interface either but that doesn't mean the game isn't going to have one.

And all those people will atleast try out EQNext, regardless. And those who refuse on principle? You can't please everyone.

If it's a fun game, it doesn't matter how many people are complaining about it now.

That's not to say that changes shouldn't be made, but until testing starts and we actually get some concrete information about the game - whining doesn't really mean anything.
