I think no matter what else happens in the genre, we have seen the death of the "theme park" mmo.
I guess you missed the recent FFXIV launch.

Theme park mmo's will always be around. There is a large market of people who like to have their hand held while adventuring. The problem is that the theme park market is over saturated and mmo devs have been cutting the pie into smaller and smaller slices. While they ignored the signifcant audience of gamers who want something else.

Now some of those same devs have realized their mistake and are looking to offer alternatives to theme parks. The market is evolving and offering more choices. Theme parks, sandboxes, etc. That is good for everyone.

Sand parks and theme boxes, box parks with more of a sand theme.
I hate pure sandparks. Minecraft bored me to tears. Not enough direction. I dislike pure themeparks. Vanilla WoW was far too directed (particulary as the game progressed), so it too become boring.

EQ and VG represented a nice in-between with EQ a little more sandboxy and VG a little more themeparky (in the original version not in the current pure themepark version) but both with enought direction so you could always find something to do when you didn't feel like exploring randomly and enough freedom so you didn't feel like you were on the rails.

In the long term, theme parks are doomed. The natural evolution of MMORPGs will be full blown digital alternative realities. They will be less games and more worlds. Games like EQN, minecraft, and project spark are just the first step.

Get stoked.

Not sure if this interview has been posted with Butler/Micheals. Nothing earth shattering, but they mention overhead map or lack there of. Also comment to a degree the size of the world, that the technology would allow for unlimited... Confirmation as well on landmark stuff that we all pretty much knew already.
I like hearing these two guys talk so much more than the dudes who are clearly trying to push a product in a car salesman kind of way.

Interesting comment given that Butler (Creative Director) and Michaels (Producer) are so much closer to the product than Omeed (Marketing) and Georgeson (Director of Development).

I feel like it's the engineer versus the car salesman. They're all trying to push a product but it sounds hollow coming from the guy on the car lot.

i agree. i think EQ had a perfect mix of both. it wasn't directionless, but it didn't force you to do something or tell you where you needed to go or what you needed to do next, either. i actually fear pure sandbox games as i see something like mortal online or UO happening where you give people the freedom to do pretty much anything they want, and all they want to do is grief other players.

Yes. I actually agree with the PvPers that a pure sandbox game should have PvP. Yet another reason I'm not sold on sandboxes.

This is a sandbox.

We've all used one. No rules except for physics. All content is user created.

EQ Landmark is a sandbox.

Honestly I think a vast majority of mmo players want the combo of the sand theme park.

Zero direction here's your shit go crazy turns off a decent amount , while SWTOR on rails the whole fucking way is boring as shit on the other end.

I'm hoping devs realize this and dont just go back and forth to opposite ends of the pendulum as it seems they are bad about doing.

Yup it is nice they have landmark for the folks who want pretty much no direction but in general most people like to have some goals and some direction otherwise they just mill around for a bit get bored and leave. One nice thing is apparently you have some kind of journal or book in eqnext that pays attention to what you spend time doing and will help guide you to doing that kind of content that you have seemed to enjoy in the past. Given how dynamic the game can potentially be something like this if implemented well could be very handy.

Good question to tweet StoryBricks. EQN should be able to handle the entire range of ADD alignments.
One of the funny things in eqlive was with their faction system I had a friend who played the game very oddly. He would just randomly go into towns and murder everybody he could find. Eventually this behavior made it so he was KOS in every city in the game except neriak even though he had attacked neriak as well. I guess the dark elves just enjoyed his style oh and some random groups of orks were friendly to him and would not attack him. Something using storybricks well could take this kind of thing and really ramp it up to the next level.
