I hate to be a cynic but my hunch is some clever players will find some way to exploit the shit out of the AI and Sony will lobotomize it.

Current raid fights are about 'exploitation' of scripted mechanics. Boss ability cooldown timers, aoe clearly marked on the floor and threat are the bread and butter of the game, and players love it. I argue that they love it because Blizzard executed that model very well and everyone blindly copied it without innovating much.

Just for fun, guessing at 20 of 40 classes & archetypes:

Archetypes: Knight, Scout, Mage, Disciple

1. Assassin
2. Thief
3. Archer
4. Paladin
5. Shadowknight
6. Necromancer
7. Enchanter
8. Sorcerer
9. Conjurer
10. Monk
11. Druid
12. Shaman
13. Priest
14. Myrmidon
15. Animist
16. Berzerker
17. Minstrel
18. Psionicist
19. Blood Magician
20. Marauder
My guess is that the archetypes will count as classes themselves in the count to 40:

1. Adventurer
2. >>>>>Tradesman/Merchant
3. >>>>>Diplomat
4. Fighter
5. >>>>>Warrior
6. ----------Berserker (DPS Focus)
7. ----------Sentinel (Tank Focus)
8. ----------Champion (Support Focus)
9. >>>>>Knight
10. ----------Paladin (Support/Tank Focus)
11. ----------Shadowknight (DPS/ Tank Focus)
12. >>>>>Scout
13. ----------Thief
14. .........................Rogue (Support Focus)
15. .........................Assassin (DPS Focus)
16. ----------Ranger
17. .........................Outrider (Melee Focus)
18. .........................Archer(Range Focus)

23. ----------Brawler (DPS/Tanking)
24. ----------Disciple (DPS/Crowd Control)
25. Caster
26. >>>>>Sorcerer
27. ----------Wizard (DPS Focus)
28. ----------Animagus (Pet Focus)
29. ----------Elementalist (DPS/Support Focus)
30. ----------Enchanter
31. .........................Psionist (Crowd Control)
32. .........................Clairvoyant (Support)
33. ----------Necromancer
34. .........................Bonecaster (Pet Focus)
35. .........................Warlock (Spell/Disease/DoT Focus)
36. ----------Geomage (DPS/Crowd Control)
37. >>>>>Priest
38. ----------Cleric (Healing)
39. ----------Druid (Healing/DPS)
40. ----------Shaman (Healing/Support)

Assume it takes a long time to open up the deeper subclasses, and then even longer to multiclass subclass to subclass and you can see that this could be a really deep class system IF they can find a way to balance it... which I am skeptical about. You can't balance for both PVE and PVP with that many options, let alone that many options cross-pollinating.

Honestly, just give each sub-class a vital, unique buff. I don't really need perfect balance--give each class something like chanter crack, haste, CC (And split it up this time--don't give all that shit to the chanter).

I sort of envision that as a multi-class. But in truth I'd forgotten about it and you can probably remove the "Diplomat" and insert Beastlord somewhere in there. You get the idea.
Eh, I'll bet on Hunter instead of Beastlord for the non-Nature based Melee Pet class. To suck in those who played WoW but not EQ.

Speculation, not hard facts. There is your 8 arch-types with 40 classes:

Very colorful but Tempest and Blademaster need to be replaced with something else. They both seem to be Warrior sub-types (Tempest is Warrior meets Wizard, Blademaster is Warrior meets Rogue). I think you need pet classes to replaces those two. Melee Pet class (Hunter). Magic Pet class (Mage).

Melee Support/Healing

40 classes is the release amount but you need to expect there will be class releases as the game matures... Just like MOBA games.

What I think makes more sense is to have your standard archetypes and the classes would be more like "titles". Take League of Legends for example and the "Marksman" archetype. You have these Classes/Champions:

Frost Archer (Ashe)
Sheriff of Piltover (Caitlin)
Daring Bombardier (Corki)
Glorious Executioner (Draven)
Prodigal Explorer (Ezreal)
Outlaw (Graves)
Mouth of the Abyss (Kog Maw)
Purifier (Lucian)
Bounty Hunter (Miss Fortune)
Demacia's Wings (Quinn)
Battle Mistress (Sivir)
Megling Gunner (Tristana)
Plague Rat (Twitch)
Arrow of Retribution (Varus)
Night Hunter (Vayne)

Using this method they do not restrict themselves or create any barriers for themselves. Creating vague descriptions doesn't pigeonhole them and will allow for the greatest flexibility. If you do the suggestions as others have listed above, you end up limiting yourself to just 1 Assassin or 1 Warrior, but technically you could have many variations of an assassin or warrior and I believe the freedom should be there to explore those options.

New question posted.

Contested content: yea or nay?

Answers:

- Everything should be contested!
- The hardest content/most valuable reward content should be contested.
- There should be a good mix of both contested and non-contested content.
- Everything should always be available, not contested. Players should never have to wait or compete for content.
- I really don't have a strong opinion either way. Both can work.

Why is this a poll? Isn't the end result clearly going to be a blend of contested & instanced content?

edit: lol:

Yes I think this likely is probably a bit closer to what we are going to see given some of the blurbs. EQ2 had the base classes that branched out and most people wound up not terribly fond of that going the moba'ish route seems a pretty reasonable way of going. Each "class" then has a lot of character and flavor and a lot more draw that just generic iterations of warrior/warriorer/warriorest.

It's going to lean heavily in the mixed direction but this is definitely one of those polls where they'll ignore the results if they feel like it. That's a shitty comment from Butler.
