I still don't think the "nothing will ever capture EQ's experience" thing is true. It's just that no one is really trying different approaches and most seem to do the 1-size-fits-all wow clone angle. I feel like every genre of games I play has evolved and gotten better except for MMOs (stagnation) and maybe JRPs (over-saturation and failure to evolve.) I felt like UO to EQ to wow was a massive thing, and I loved vanilla wow. But then after that I feel like a lot of stagnation hit and every game feels the same. I would love something very challenging, maybe even roguelike in a lot of aspects, with no quest hubs and less of a gear/stat focus. I'm basically waiting for the next big sandbox game I guess.
I don't believe it is impossible either but given the current direction of MMO's, their current concept and gameplay really doesn't facilitate that experience. EQ really forced a different generation of gamers to play together. We had not been influenced yet either... Most of us had played games (computer or even board) that required a lot of patience and we wanted that kind of interaction. Now, most gamers have very negative online experiences outside of their friends. They prefer not to deal with PUG's and refuse to deal with people outside of the guild at best.

Everything is just different and unless a game really appeals to a certain set of gamers, you're not going to get that experience.

I don't think you necessarily have to have FORCED grouping but make grouping the better choice if you have the time to build the group. I always thought that all WoW had to do to encourage grouping over soloing was up the group xp in the dungeons. If you didn't have all the quests for the dungeons or full rested xp it just wasn't worth going in unless you really wanted an item and even then the items you got in most leveling up instances were either outgeared in a short time by quest loot or close enough that it didn't really matter. I suppose that is another avenue to promote grouping is make the solo quest loot very weak. Weak solo quest gear + higher xp for grouping in a dungeon and bam. If you have 30minutes, solo some quests for exp. If you have more time actually form a group and do a dungeon.
Vanguard had it right ( solo vs group ). All of the premium content that you had to see was group, yet the leveling curve early on was such that soloing or duoing during times in between was great to have.

Point is, no one considered soloing to cap in vanguard because well all of the best content in the game was group based... yet for most of the game there was plenty of solo-ish stuff to do in between.

Whoever from SOE is reading this:

You need to be very concerned that this thread dropped to page 2. This is probably one of, if not the oldest and most avid fan communities of the EverQuest franchise. The fact that we aren't talking about this game is a very good indication of how engaged your 'base/core' audience is.

You should probably work on fixing that.

They don't want / care about us anymore! They want new blood: Minecraft / LoL blood.
Landmark looks neat, but I'm not a die-hard builder or crafter.
The interesting parts of EQN, for me, are going to be Storybricks, if the combat feels fun, and the nostalgia of being in Norrath again and that stuff won't be around till EQN proper.

Edit: I guess they haven't solved the voxel liquid problem yet. I'm going to name my EQL plot Square Lake

I wouldn't say that, but the problem is that today there are so many MMOs out there with raids and quests that it's hard to take a product to market and have the same impact EQ and WoW had.

I'm not even talking about the game's target audience since it's clearly NOT us.

What im saying is that their marketing/community outreach is severely lacking if a 15 year old EverQuest community (originally, anyway) has stopped talking about the next instalment of your franchise 3 months after announcement.

Sorry to break it to you, but the people here haven't been the bellwether for mmos in a long time.

That's why we went from Dev's posting daily, to Curt Schilling, to no one.
