They still have a dedicated team on EQN. EQL could be great..let's see how greedy they get first. If they start charging for tools to create things I probably won't play.

I have no doubts Landmark will be successful. The model is proven. They're just layering a better-looking fantasy world on top of it. Kudos to them for that.

They still have to make EQ:N right? I thought that was the point of all of this. Or has that shifted now? Did they just use the idea of EQ:N as an excuse to pitch Landmark with a big IP attached to it?
Are you implying the Sony Kickstarter for their version of minecraft wouldn't be getting any funds if they hadn't used the EQ name slapped on ?

I believe they stated that the first 3(?) tools are available right away, the rest are gained by playing.

At this point I think I would rather them pre sell founder/alpha packs that help them fund added development rather than having to rush out a buggy/shitty shell of a game because some suits in a boardroom decided they have spent enough and need to get a product out.

I shouldn't have to remind anyone on this board how "the standard" has turned out for MMO's and frankly games in general the past 8 years so maybe doing things different for a change will help. I might not like the idea of it but I am not gonna shit all over it if there are people willing to pony up. I dont really know how much more info people need for a pre alpha game. I saw all I really need to in the couple vids so far as that twitch stream showed a dude building shit for 10 minutes. At some point your gut either tells you if you like what you have seen and heard so far or not.

I don't think SoE will be raising the standard when this is all said and done. Just my opinion.

Supposedly they decided to make EverQuest Next a voxel-based game. Then they saw how much the developers enjoyed building shit. So they decided to make a separate game focused solely on that. It's since been said that it's going to receive nearly all the tools the EQ Next developers are using, so that you can basically make your own MMO.

Dave Georgesonexplains the eventual goal of Landmark:

"What I'm most excited about is where Landmark is eventually going. Right now it looks like, 'Yay, building tools! Yay! And they're really powerful, and that's very cool!' but that's not where Landmark is headed. EverQuest Next is being developed in parallel with Landmark. As we develop cool tools--like AI and scenario tools and all that other stuff--we'll be putting those in Landmark. So, eventually Landmark becomes 'Build Your Own MMO.' That will be fantastic. Watching players build their own worlds."

I think people are getting a bit hung up on the idea Landmark creations being put into Next. Perhaps I'll be proven wrong, but I don't think they're trying to get players to create the entire world for them. The idea of player made creations in Landmark being permanently incorporated in to the world of Next is likely just a carrot on a stick to get people to play and build shit in Landmark.
I guess I'm just a little worried that EQ:N is nothing more than ideas right now, and their only focus is on Landmark for the foreseeable future. I want EQ:N details beyond hypothetical round-table discussions.

Georgeson: "You know how we spent all that money over the last few years?"
Suits: "WE DO."
Georgeson: "Well, how about this: We will make two games. One is the actual 'sequel' to Everquest."
Suits: "GO ON."
Georgeson: "The other is this: We will turn the new dev tools into a Minecraft game and let them pay for themselves."
Georgeson: "...and help fund the rest of Everquest Next Development. We will have income in two quarters and be cash positive by the sequel's launch."
Suits: <shits themselves>
SUITS: "PROCEED."
SUITS: "AS A REWARD,YOU MAY TOUCH OUR PENII."
Smedley: "Woohoo!"

I agree. My interest went from pretty high after the FanFaire to basically being dormant, waiting for more information.

Landmark sounds neat at the moment, but I never got that much into MineCraft. The evenual goal of building and designing my own MMO world interests me A LOT more than simply playing with blocks, but that is seemingly quite a ways off. If they can pull it off, it could be amazing. However it's hard to get way too excited about it just yet.

You have to jump some hoops to do that, and run the risk that they later change their log-in / server / IP-detection in a way that makes it impossible for you to log in. Even opening the website with an EU IP refers you to pro7 when you try to make an account, although its obviously easy to bypass you can never be sure it stays that way. Payments might be problematic too.

I have several old original SOE accounts that I wanted to register for EQN beta. they pre-date the pro7 deal by a decade and I still had to hide my IP to log into account management and click Yes for beta sign-up.
For me pro7 is a deal breaker. It pretty much means no EQN for me unless I can go on the US side.

I'm against it..I don't think alpha should be something people pay to get in. ...

Before that happens we are going to see a ton of games designed.. not around fun.. but designed around a FTP model that will increasingly nickle and dime us.. I guaranfuckingtee it.
I think your vendetta against this pricing/scalping model is a couple of years late. As others have noted early access selling is pretty widespread for any F2P that manages to get some publicity before going open beta. Your other point seems to be that corporations are going to take advantage of us and try to drain us of as much money as possible with as little effort as they can manage. While true, it's not a fucking revelation and has been the case for years in the gaming industry. I dunno, maybe you stuck with a single MMO for the last 5 years or mostly played single player stuff, but F2P MMOish games and other genres have been doing what SOE is doing here for long enough that it just gets a "meh" out of me, the rustling you show here is just late to the party.

I still don't get what the difference is between a $90 founder pack that gives in-game items/testing access and a $90 collectors edition that gives early testing access/in-game items. I really don't understand what 'precedent' people think this is setting, since it's been done for quite a while with other pricing models.
There isnt one unless you didnt notice this shit happening for years.

I just watched thearchive video of the streamand they showed off a dude building and it's pretty rad. Only a few cringey parts!

I'm glad they made it absolutely clear that EQN and EQNL are two seperate games. Now that I've seen a bit more gameplay and have heard them talk about it I think I can justify giving some money towards it. The fact that they mentioned before and slightly in that video that they're going to be releasing their tools to Landmark as they develop them/the game is really fucking neat.

Because it's the whole point...they said they are allowing people to pay to get in at a very early alpha state of the game. Ideally you want those people testing not playing for fun. That's what people have been concerned about. He's laying out exactly the issue at hand. People will be playing and not testing. The entry to alpha has changed. It's now a monetary entry not based on experience/best qualified. He understands the difference but can't seem to grasp those concerns that people already brought up pages back regarding alpha testing.
The two are not mutually exclusive. You can have trained dedicated alpha testers and you can have sight see-ers.

What the fuck is so hard to understand about that? "You can't let people into the zoo because who will take care of the animals?" They aren't asking for alpha testers, they are asking people to play the game while they alpha test.

Would a venn diagram be helpful for you to better grasp these simple concepts?

I grasp them just fine. You're making assumptions this will be the case... I'm telling you what they have said and what every early beta I've been in with SoE has been like.. They have been pretty bad and have lead to a bad launch. They have already lacked good testers.. I don't see this being any different.. I think we will just see more nonsense post on the alpha boards complaining that they, OMG paid and can't play!? I think SoE needs to worry about getting a solid and stable game behind them before they go about making money on the early beta process. It hasn't exactly been one of their strengths. It's obviously we disagree here so let's just see how beta and launch turn out? I feel like they are risking the integrity of the alpha process and in return we will get a much more buggy/unpolished product. Again, they have a terrible track record at this and I would expect a different approach to ensure a better release is all. I could be totally wrong but we will see. They said in the video they are doing something new and opening the game up a lot earlier than they normally would to people. To me that equates=testing an early alpha.

Creed- I'm not late to the party. I was there in the beginning and FTP has gradually got worse IMO...it's expanded and will continue to do so. I'm not good at just accepting things..
