So many unknowns and I'm guessing they don't know either.. A lot that stuff will probably be decided and tweaked in beta..
That's the thing with a large number of these systems, I think. They know conceptually but until its coded, in-game, and at least a little playtested, I would bet they can't really talk about this stuff or fanboys/haters will scream to the rafters. That is why there is so much "napkin" talk.

Not only that but let's be real.. They need to make money off this stuff. I'm sure that is also playing a part of the process.

Just got around to watching that stream. It was actually pretty cool to watch that tower taking shape, and I can see how more time could definitely flesh things out. The tools seem simplistic enough.. considering paying to get in, but I dunno yet.

My thoughts on this
1) The dates we have listed are "on or before" dates. What that means is we will start Alpha on our before the end of February. Truth is we intend to start it a long time before that. But you can be guaranteed that we will start it by that date.
2) Why are we letting people into an Alpha? - This is a whole new development style for us. We're making a completely new kind of game and because of that we need a lot more people to help us test things out and make it great. An Alpha is NOT for everyone. Alpha's tend to be very buggy and change a lot, so expect a ton of downloads. That being said, you also can have an amazing influence over the games direction. I think that's pretty cool.
3) Why is the trailblazer pack cost so much? We put out 3 different pricepoints to suit everyone's desire. Ultimately the game is F2P but we actually have to have serious volume to make that work. In the interim while we're building, we have to build out the infrastructure sooner than we ordinarily would.
4) What is Landmark exactly? - It is a standalone, social building and exploring MMO. It will have combat (though not at launch) and a ton of other features.
hope this helps understand

Odd question I think ,but maybe not.

As I never really got into minecraft but was impressed with what folks did with it , those of you that have really followed the tools and building in EQL , how's it seem for a total building newbie. As in fairly friendly for easy learning curve in the beginning or do you need leet minecraft architecture skills ?

As much bitching as I do about what they are doing to the EQ lore and classes , I might still want to give the building part a go.

Seemed pretty intuitive in the video. Click to place blocks, point and drag for rows or lines, scroll wheel to enlarge/shrink, Copy/Paste, rotate, spray painting, undo/redo, Reset to Server Default.

The building tools look great, that's for sure. But I am not sure how much pull EQNL will have for people that are not so much into building fantastic things, but are more into the "survival" mode that Minecraft has. I know that my kids will only play Minecraft on survival mode, with lots and lots of zombies. Since EQNL will probably not have combat at first, it does seem game-play could be a little bland for many.

It is nice to explore and find rare Ores and such, but without some sort of danger/competitive element either by NPC's or PC's it seems it will get old fast for the non-builders amongst us.

Half the leet minecraft architecture skills is basically trying to make slanted/curved stuff with cubic blocs. You have two brushes to make that, so you're good to go.

The other half has nothing to do with UI, and everything with visualizing the intended result as/before you start. The UI will not help you there. You want a fantastic building, you need to be good at making plans and being creative.

Minecraft is simply blocks and plopping them down and the reason things get to be "amazing" is due to size, scope & execution. I would say minecraft doesn't really offer "building tools" per say.

EQN:L is more similar to a 3D graphic program (ie: Maya) with all the handles and functions to copy/paste/rotate/drag/scale/etc, except that building within a gameworld makes it easier to visualize and masks a lot of the complexity that standard 3D programs would have. Standard Minecraft doesn't have any of that.

Building in EQN:L will take much longer than in Minecraft simply because you have more detail. In Minecraft you don't worry about texturing or smoothing, in EQN:L you'll probably start off building a base structure than you'll smooth out areas and roughen things up then you'll "paint" the final textures on. It's a lot more work and I imagine the final results can be amazing.

EQN:L appeals to me a lot because I have a background in 3D graphics but never pursued that path very far and it's been a while since I've done anything creative with it. I have also been with the FoH minecraft crew for most of the servers and enjoyed building things a lot. Combine those 2 interests and you basically have EQN:L. It's basically exactly what I'm looking for. I think I might spend more time in EQN:L than EQN actually.

You pretty much killed EQNL for me, I spent great 4 years on the Original and my foundest memories are mostly about having to be constantly on my toes on most zones from Crushbone to PoF.

Will wait for the full EQN I guess.

Just how dangerous is minecraft survival mode now anyways, last time I played it, it was actually harder to get yourself killed than staying alive.

Those building tools are pretty amazing. I'm impressed, and I think if they keep the trend going for other parts of the game it's going to be The Next Best Thing (TM).

It really depends. If you dig deep and fast without improving your weapons and gear as you delve? Yeah, you can get swarmed and die and lose everything pretty quickly.

If you move slow, upgrade quickly, and stay away from big open areas where you can't see all around you, yeah, you'll never die.

Indeed. Having spent the last couple months with nothing but SOE's "marketing," it's easy to forget that there's a game with legitimate potential behind the pointless roundtable questions.

It really is easy to forget. I fell into the same hole myself multiple times during this pre-release hype hoopla of theirs, and I'll probably end up back in it a couple more times before this is over. I'm actually the most surprised that SoE is surprising me. Here's hoping that it's an ongoing occurrence.
