Watching progress is pretty impressive.

But I still don't see why you wouldn't wait for beta.

To be honest, playing in alpha/beta will probably be more fun than the finished product because every week is like a giant patch day with something new to play with. And not only new, but everything is unspoilered. Nothing has been data-mined to death and available on the net. When they add a new feature, you get to figure it out with everyone else which to me is exploration in itself. If you wait till the finished product, you'll have guides, item databases, min/max paths laid out, and pretty much everything spoiled before you're done installing the thing. For a game about exploration.... the alpha *IS* a big part of the exploration of the game.

Get the Settlers Pack for 20 bucks and wait for closed beta? or Get the Explorers pack and play in Alpha? I havent followed the progress of Landmark much, on their website or this thread.
I've been asking myself this same question. Now that beta is only a month away, I think I'm going to wait. I have some other games to tide me over until March 31.

I havent put a huge amount of time in it, but its not what I was hoping for. Unless you cant wait, Id recommend waiting till at least beta. The Minecraft reference is close in a couple areas, but miles off in others.

At this point, joining is kind of a waste, unless you have like 18 hours/day to play. The first phase of gameplay is a MAJOR resource grind. You will have to mine and chop trees for hours on end to upgrade your pick, axe and your crafting stations.

Then you have to go out again and harvest for the stuff that you need to build on your claim...which at this point will most likely be on the edge of the map. That takes quite a bit of time to do and with beta only a month away you will definitely feel robbed when everything gets wiped. In closed beta you get to keep your tools, so that really is the best time to start.

At the very least you should jump in and familiarize yourself with the basics of the game. Dont think that you will be far behind others who have been playing the game since start. Templates is all you can keep and meh who really cares about that. The most important thing will be to get on right when closed beta starts so that you can find a nice claim.

I got what I paid for out of it, and now I'm just chillin. I have no reason to spend insane amounts of time building cool shit to template, as it really doesn't interest me. I made a couple of cool buildings, and now I'm in the been there seen that mood. I'm proud of how SoE is handling the game, and I can't wait for EQNext. Just going to take a break from bob the builder for a bit.

(You can hook claims together, right?)
Currently, no. This week's patch should finally allow you to own more than one claim and group your personal claims together but they haven't said anything lately about community builds.

I thought they said they were also adding claim permissions this week, which would allow group builds.

so, in the first iteration of grabbing a claim, the map was a bunch of giant boxes with your claim in the middle... So, in this weeks patch i assume that we will be able to link our claim right next to our current claim as said in last weeks video.
But....
those "big" boxes of land that we own, that is where we will be able (i assume) to claim more land... if that's the case and lets say _everyone_ claims all their land in those boxes... where do resources come from? Since those claims will be technically all the current red areas on the maps once fully claimed since you can't dig on claimed land....

I'm guessing you cannot claim 100% of the area within the larger box.

You might be able to if you had enough claims but also since crowding is so severe a lot of those larger exclusion boxes overlap each other and you can't claim inside of someone else's exclusion box. That'll make it hard for most people to actually expand their claim since most everyone is currently boxed in on all sides.

Once they move ores underground it won't be an issue at all since people can dig under your claim just fine.

Also remember there is limited z-axis so you can still mine under/over people's claims. Once resources are underground it shouldnt be an issue... trees on the other hand could pose a problem.

I don't think trees will be a problem ultimately.
I noticed that even in areas that were rocky desert, they had a lot of driftwood-like fallen branches and stuff with that petrified forest look. I'm pretty sure most people just run blindly by them because''that doesn't look like I can get logs from that''.

If they wanted they could simple add a few more of those types of nodes; no need to actually draw real trees with branches if it's a desert-like place.

Is it miles off? You go get resources and you build your spot. They are different games of course, but if you enjoy resource hunting and building, Landmark should satisfy you. This is with the understanding that there is no creative mode. You have to farm your resources. If you mean there is no extensive addon community, well, I guess I would agree with you in that regard.

By the time the caves, water, and new biomes are added - Landmark will shine. The game has potential. One pitfall I am concerned with is performance. It seems to be one of the most demanding games of all time!

Miles off compared to what Im looking for? I guess? Im just not sure what I was hoping for is all I was really implying. I can see that the game has huge potential and I really cant wait to play EQ:Next, itself.

Im curious if the updates will spark some interest for you. Or, do you just not like anything at all? The game is a skeleton right now.
