Wikipedia says it was first introduced with the Voodoo 2 in 1998, so that sounds plausible, even though I wasn't aware they had SLI that early either.

If I remember correctly EQ was one of the first to require a 3d card. I was all ready and set with my 2 Voodoo2's in SLI , but I remember folks actually having to go out and buy one to play it. It was considered quite a "cutting edge" thing to require at the time.
I remember getting a monster 3d card for it, then maybe a Voodoo banshee at release. Dat nostalgia.

Yeah, SLI predates EQ. It was extremely buggy and unstable back then though. I remember I had the Pure 3D. It was top of the line with 6 megabytes of video memory! Yeesh.

Anyway, a GTX 275 min requirement is hardly pushing any boundaries. If people aren't running that, I can't really say I sympathize with them not being able to run a modern game like EQNL.

When did that card come out anyway? Early 2009? SOE's newest flagship game runs on a 5 year old rig? That's extremely generous IMO.

I just found a used GTX 275 on kijiji for $15.

I'm ready to upgrade my HD 6970 and that's like 3 times better than a GTX 275!

lol @ 15 bucks for one.

I've been looking at the Steam Hardware survey to get an idea of how much of a problem my be looming in SoE's future. Some of that shit is pretty shocking. 50% of Steam users are at 4gb of RAM or less. Video cards don't look too bad although I'm a bit surprised to see that about 10% of machines are using built in laptop cards. Obviously that won't be a direct translation over to an MMO but I have a feeling we're in for some real bitching once Alpha hits.

There's always tons of bitching...with anything. Par for the course and I'm glad they have some sets of boundaries.

You Voodoo users are the reason SOE removed the option to drop coins on the ground. Thanks a lot! =p For those that don't know/remember, there was a bug introduced at some point that would cause anyone using a Voodoo card to crash if they stepped on a coin.

Yeah I spent way too much money on my PC's back then (and still do). People bitching about video card prices today amuse me.

A Creative/Diamond 12mb Voodoo 2 card were 299.99 each. (8mb were 199.99 each).

I ran 2x of the them plus the matrox card for decent 2d (the v2's were for 3d only)so was pushing 800+ tax. Many gamers ran 2 Voodoo2's in SLI as was really the only option at the time if you were also rocking the 1600x1200 monster monitors.

Never had too many issues with my SLI to be honest with you. Mainly played EQ, Myth the Fallen Lords , Quake 2 for the 3d games , also some Battlezone. Eventually Tribes a lot also.

I'm with ZZ and Quaid on being glad they are requiring a decent pc also.

Running from corner to corner helps give a better idea for the size of the plot. To be honest, they looked a little smaller than that on the last video. I was initially thinking a 20 by 20 would be needed for a mega project. I think anything from a 5 x 5 to a 10 x 10 would give a pretty good size area depending on how ambitious you want to be. I can see a lot of people using a 3x3 or 3x4 pretty easy.

Q: Can other people join their claim to mine?
A: Initially there will be a buffer space between different owners' claims, for performance purposes. This is something we're going to evaluate during Alpha. If it turns out it's something that's highly desirable, we'll investigate further what we can do to make it possible.

Q: Will there be guild claims?
A: We know this is something there's a lot of interest in, but we are focusing on the details of individual claims for the moment and will save guild discussions for further into the future.
What are they thinking? "If it turns out it's desirable"? Group projects and screwing around with friends/guild is a huge thing that people will very obviously want.

What I'd like to see done is some sort of tier system for plots. Give us the choice to open with that plot being shown in the video, all the way on up to dungeon/guild sizes.

The claims are again 70mx70m , that just doesn't seem that small to me. They definitely need to have sharing/linking of them available though.
