The thing is, Interplay had already taken the rpg out of the game, and watered it down, shat out a stinker for consoles, and then essentially abandoned the ip to rot.
Are you talking about this?

Goddamn that game was fun. It wasn't Fallout, but it was fun. Post-Apocalyptic Diablo is what it was.

I miss that console ARPG genre that got really popular there for a few years on the PS2/Xbox. The console Baldurs Gate games, Fallout BOS, that EQ Champions of Norrath game. All good co-op console fun.

Unrelated, but there's also this mod here --Armor Modifications Expanded at Fallout 4 Nexus - Mods and community-- which is a good idea, but the guy felt the need to expand his mod far into cheat territory without providing a version of it without all the cheater effects. I've taken it and edited out all that shit and just left behind the ability to add Ballistic Weave mods to clothing/outfit/hat items that make sense. The vanilla system looks like something Ted the Intern started work on, got maybe a third of the way through it, and then never bothered to look at again. Why the fuck can I mod a "battered" fedora but not a dirty, worn, crumpled, or yellow one? Why can I mod a baseball uniform or army/military fatigues but not a baseball hat or military cap? The whole thing makes no sense whatsoever.

Still testing it to make sure I didn't break anything while editing close to 100 records, but if anyone wants my version let me know. I'm probably not going to post it to Nexus, but I can dump it onto my dropbox if someone wants to use it.
Would this mod work as well?Armorsmith Extended at Fallout 4 Nexus - Mods and community

Allows all outfits & hat/helmets to get ballistic weave, but also expands outfits to all be wearable under armor and every open face hat/helmet can use face covers now. The second parts might be a bit cheat-ish.

Yeah, I really don't feel like raising all the damn followers just to get their perks. To do it quickly, at least with the ones that 'like' stuff like lockpicking, hacking, stealing, etc., you end up quicksaving and reloading before each action in order to reset the cooldown on getting the affinity. I couldn't take listening to Codsworth anymore and just opened the console and did a modav CA_affinity 250 on him, did a conversation, then rinsed and repeated until he was maxed out. (Max is 1000, conversations happen every 250.) The alternative was doing the save/load thing while painting my power armor over and over, but even "Codsworth loved that." is only worth +15 affinity and I would have had to do it like 50 times.
Im not doing that on my first playthrough but every other playthrough i will.

Game finished, Story was nonsensical with the decisions I made. I guess that's what I get for just spamming X for most of the dialog.

Lets talk plot/story.

So I sided with the railroad and betrayed my son/father. So let me get this straight. The railroad hated the institute because they made AI but refused to let the AI have freedom. So to help ?AI? have freedom they decided to destroy the institute (forcing me to kill 100 AI that they are trying to save) and making sure no other AI will ever be made again due to destruction of the tech?.So basically they want to stop abortions by murdering the mother? So I try to help the commonwealth by ?.setting off a nuclear explosion in the heart of Boston?

Makes no fucking sense. All I wanted to do was find my damn son, but when I did shit got weird and the game got dumb. Would have been way better if Shaun was just in another castle for 2-3 maps. It was pretty obv from the start that Shawn was going to be old.

First thing I did after the lack luster ending was load my Y in the road save up and massacre everyone at the railroad. ?oh hai Nester, why are you in that power armor holding that .44?

I agree with some other posts, recently I just wanted it to end so I could have my life back..

Ended at lvl 44 still need to grind to 50 do 2 more endings to plat. Got benevolent leader last night. Secret is to make 16 clinics instead of other stores. CHA gear lets you add more people, my drive-in had 23 folks

Yeah, that appears to do the same thing, but again with a bunch of cheater stuff that I personally wouldn't want in my game. Making all outfits wearable under armor is pretty retarded since the reason game doesn't allow you to do it is because it causes horrible clipping. Clipping is pretty bad with the gas masks and helmets too. I guess it depends on what your tolerance for ugly is.

The mod I edited for myself does nothing but add ballistic weave to a bunch of clothing, outfits, and hats. I deleted all the Institute stuff, doesn't feel right to me to be allowed to use RR mods on their items. The vanilla files allowed it on a couple BoS things, so I added the rest of their stuff even though RR and BoS don't exactly get along either. IMO nothing I did is a cheat, it's just finishing someone's half-assed work in the base game. Pretty sure the only thing in it I'm ever going to use is the military cap anyway. For clothes I use Minuteman Outfit (AG+1/PE+1) which was already flagged for weave before this.

Im not doing that on my first playthrough but every other playthrough i will.
Codsworth is probably the only one I'll do that for. Maybe Hancock if his affinity goes up too slow, which I'm pretty sure it will since the only easily repeatable thing he likes is chem use. Strong has no side quest and his perk is useless to me so I'm going to ignore his dumb ass entirely.

I'd be happy to take advice on that.

Benevolent Leader achievement:

I went to Sunshine Coop because Sanc Hills has some of those worthless characters you can't send away like Mama Murphey. Sometimes they work sometimes they don't and if you even have one person not gathering food or being a trader you are SOL.

Requirements for preparation.
- Send ALL companions away from this settlement, you want to have only settlers.
- Remove ALL scrap/destroyed buildings etc from the settlement.
- 10 charisma (I used a Tuxedo to get me the extra point for ten) (20 People)
- 24 Mutfruit Plants Planted. (24 Food)
- Eight Wells Placed (32 Water).
- 24 Beds Placed (ALL INDOORS, UNDER A ROOF!) (24 Beds)
- 30 Machine Gun Turrets Placed in a circle around the area you will keep your Shops. (150 Defence)
- Power is not necessary but i used a few generators to power some extra laser turrets. (15 Power)
- Place four of EACH happiness generating shop (TIER 3) (CLINIC, FOOD, GENERAL STORE, CLOTHING).
- Ensure your size bar is around three quarters full. (3/4 SIZE)
- Go to other settlements, go into workshop mode, go up to settlers and press X to move them to sanctuary hills, keep doing this until you have 20 there.

Once having done all this.
- Build a bell and use it to find all the settlers.
- Assign the four permanent settlers (unique characters) in sanctuary hills to food. I moved away so I didn't need to do this.
- Assign your random settlers to every shop one by one.
- Build a seat and start waiting for 24 hours at a time a little down the road from your shopping mall. (Rinse and repeat these steps)
- Once you finish waiting walk around for five minutes or so till your happiness goes up. (Rinse and repeat these steps)
- Once you reach 98-99 happiness or so and the green arrow stops going up, start placing paintings everywhere, on any wall that you can find! ( I was stuck on 99 with no arrow either way, then placed about 100 paintings and it ticked over!)

I put up a few TVs and a 5-6 couches and waited a bit away from the shop. I put a bed up next to the bell and would sleep in the bed 24 hours then wait in the chair 24 hours. After that I would ring the bell have them gather around you. Yes all of them so be patient and wait. I would run around for 5mins and put up a few paintings and maybe a turret. Keeping your bar at 3/4 green is crucial.

I took some of that from a poster on TA and mixed n match what worked for me. Hope that helps.

I pointed out that the watered down mass effect style dialogue choices would be a negative move days before the title even came out.

I also pointed out that the game would suffer from all the same flaws that all previous bethesda titles aince morrowind have suffered from.

I also said it wouldnt matter, the game would still be enjoyable enough that people would look past those flaws.

Ive said repeatedly that the problem with voice acting is it is expensive and too limiting which drives cost oriented development to cut corners. Planescape had vast sweeping dialogue trees where what you said really had impact on how the game played out.

This is something anyone can see.

I dont particularly favor voiced dialogue and the mass effect good/neutral/kinda bad/smarmy dialogue wheels, and dont particularly like a voice main character for exactly these reasons.

Game is still a blockbuster title that soaked up more time from most people the past two weeks than any other game this year except maybe witcher 3.

For a 5.71 million dollar purchase on bethesdas part in 2003ish, fallout has been nothing but windfall profits, and a massive unparalleled success story.

Saying Bethesda era fallouts are good games but bad rpgs is like 7 years late complaint. Rpg aspects get watered down in the move to modern gaming models with fully voiced dialogues etc. This has been the case across the board for closing on 20 years now.

The days of attenpting to truly emulate tabletop games as anything but a niche of a niche market are gone, for better or worse.
I agree on the voice acting. I don't need to hear "let me see what you have" 100x over in a game. I also feel that it contributes to dumbing down the dialogue options of which Fallout 4 has some horribly dumbed down options.

The big issue is Fallout 4 is a big departure from even Fallout 3 on the dialogue options, story options outside the main story and even making the options in the main story make sense when you do have them. Fallout 4 fails in that regard in a pretty big way and it is a major change from previous games. One I hope they don't continue.

I may of enjoyed the game, however I enjoyed it because there are so few games that let you do your own thing, much less in a post apocalyptic world. There are major flaws starting to develop with Fallout 4. Dialogue is a huge step down from previous games, options to impact the world are nearly non existent and even when you do have them they kind of don't make a lot of sense or are done in a very rushed and half ass manner for at least 2 out of the 3 obvious paths.

I'd gladly take Fallout 3 story arc and it's plethora of options over Fallout 4. Much less New Vegas. They aren't even close in quality. The writing quality has taken a big shit over at Bethesda.

I assume you've played Wasteland2? Its setting (and gameplay) is similar to the older Fallout games and lets you do whatever the hell you want.

Agree Kedwyn, Ive made the same argument.

Dialogue isnt just about having lots of options, but about having options that are meaningful and impactful.

Planescape Torment is the absolute best example of this.

It is unfortunate that as things like graphics and voice acting increase, complexity and impactful decision making seems to inversely decline.

I dont know a solution to the problem without either abandoning voice acting(which I dont think the main stream games industry is willing to let go due to their desire to be like hollywood) or graphics stopping progressing.

It seems like one leg always has to be short on the stool, and the leg that keeps getting cut shorter and shorter is player choice and impact.

Its not a trend I enjoy or prefer, but it just seems to be the way it is, regardless.

I assume you've played Wasteland2? Its setting (and gameplay) is similar to the older Fallout games and lets you do whatever the hell you want.
I should probably play the updated edition to see if theres more content, but I just found wasteland 2 to be good, but generally empty.

Still glad I picked it up in early access because I felt it was a good foundation and hope theyll make sequels expanding on the framework they have there.

Some of the dialogue could be fixed with a patch. One thing I've noticed is many companions will have context sensitive lines (either automatic or they will say it when you ask them for their thoughts). The problem is the "your thoughts" option tends to randomize, so you get the typical canned replies a dozen times before you get to the context ones. It would be good if they prioritized the context ones.

What is funny, though, is your character will interrupt them and end the dialogue string if you spam the "your thoughts" button again. He may say something short like "ah", "hmm, really". One time I used it on Piper while she was using a common canned reply so I could skip it and my character said "Ugh...Reporters...". This was with maxed affection as well lol.

I hate using Preston, but I want him with me when you find the doppleganger. Bastard always moves around, though ;(

On a side note, I was exploring and found a 100% complete X-01 Power Armor suit. GG...suit is sweet, the eyes are the lightsource instead of a lamp. Now I just need Science 4 so I can get a rocket booster on this thing.

how good/op do you guys think "added projectile" is?
bought that added proj combat rifle at that one location you can do that..
it lists 131 damage atm. with 3 ranks of rifleman.
but, I just got a "freezing" combat rifle off a legendary supermutant. that is 78 +16 cryo damage. and freeze on crit. so a good amount of less damage, but alt damage type, and freeze on crit. (although, most crits are instant kills already).

which do you think I should use? primary weapon. (I refuse to use my wounding combat shotgun, unless Im mad.)

If you are specced towards rifles, I would actually suggest a high ROF energy weapon, like a modded up institute rifle, for short range encounters. Sniping, its no contest. Double shot weapons outclass EVERYTHING, aside from the EC Rifles, without the ammo issues. Assuming you are not doing the sniper crawl all game, some sort of in between weapon for vats and hip fire duels is essential. That double shot rifle should be worked in as your scoped snipe weapon, though. Its too good to waste in a mid range role.

thats an idea too. using a .50 cal sniper rifle with no legendary stat for my scoped rifle. could store it, and scope the added shot, and use the freeze for mid range/vats.

I use the Overseer combat rifle as my primary weapon. Chambered for .308 and with a reflex dot sight instead of a scope so that it doesn't fuck up VATS. I do have a two shot hunting rifle also, so with that set up as a .50 sniper I have no need of the combat rifle for long range. I carry a gauss rifle too, even though I have yet to find a single legendary one. A plain one still one-shots almost everything in the game.
